Evaluating the In-site Sorting of Solid Waste in Selected Educational Institutions – A Pilot Study

This study evaluated the process of in-site sorting of the generated solid waste (SW) in some educational institutions in Ma’an city, Jordan. The study included eight schools and one University. The students and employees of seven schools, as well as the students and employees of the University, had received the awareness campaigns concerning the importance and benefits of in-site sorting of SW. As a control, one school student and employee who had not received awareness campaigns were involved. The institutions were provided with four bins at each collection site (glass and plastic, paper and cardboard, metals, and bread). The content of bins in each institution was collected and sorted manually to evaluate the efficiency of the conducted awareness campaigns on onsite sorting behavior. The mass ratios of many SW components in their designated bins in the reference school (control) were higher than the average ratios in the assigned bins for the same component in all schools. As for the University, the results of the manual sorting showed that all bins included a mix of SW in different ratios; moreover, the proportions of glass and plastic, and metals were lower than the proportions of other components. On the basis of the above mentioned results, it can be concluded that the awareness campaigns did not achieve the stated goals; subsequently, the in-site sorting failed in the schools and the University. Thus, different awareness campaigns should be assessed to identify the best approach positively affect the SW sorting and disposal habits of people

Study on the Impact and Water Absorption Performance of <i>Prosopis juliflora</i> & Glass Fibre Reinforced Epoxy Composite Laminates

Current global trends demand the replacement of synthetic fibres with natural fibres in polymeric composites. The present work makes use of Prosopis juliflora, a plant that is a threat to the environment as a partial replacement in a hybrid composite. Individual Prosopis juliflora fibres are added to matrices at ratios of 12, 6, 9 and 8 wt % and glass fibres are added discretely at ratios of 28, 24, 21 and 32 wt % into matrices as well. The composites are prepared with four different combinations and tested in terms of the mechanical benefits and water absorption performance. This work exploits the mechanical advantage of impact energy in addition to producing Prosopis juliflora particles, fibre glass mats, and resin appropriate for structural uses. Water absorption tests are conducted for four different compositions. Among the four samples, sample 3 (9 wt % Prosopis juliflora fibres and 21 wt % glass fibres) has a higher rate of water absorption than the others, although sample 2 (6 wt % Prosopis juliflora fibres and 24 wt % glass fibres) has a lower rate. The difference in the quantity of water absorption between the hybrid composites can be attributed to the weight percentage of fibres. On the other hand, sample 1 (12 wt % Prosopis juliflora fibres and 28 wt % glass fibres) is reported to have absorbed 2.6 J of energy in the impact strength test. The increase in impact strength is attributed to the increase in the weight percentage of glass fibres. A scanning electron microscope is employed to study the fractured surfaces of the composites. This study shows that the developed hybrid composite could be employed in structural and automotive applications because of its improved impact strength and water resistance

Biological implications of atmospheric and pedospheric levels of heavy metals

Heavy metals and pollutants are gaining more and more attention nowadays. Heavy metals at high concentrations have an undesirable effect on soil, plants, animals, and humans. The high concentrations of these minerals reduce the activity of microbiological organisms, which affect the quality of the soil and is reflected in the inhibition of the physiological activity of plants. If plants absorb these minerals, they affect the food chain and thus reflect on plants and animals. Heavy metals have an effect on water bodies and marine organisms, as water pollution with these minerals leads to an increase in the production of reactive oxygen species that cause harm to fish and marine organisms. Therefore, it is necessary to use fertilizers that are free of those heavy metals in order to get rid of the harmful effects of heavy metals.</p

Green Corrosion Inhibition on Carbon-Fibre-Reinforced Aluminium Laminate in NaCl Using Aerva Lanata Flower Extract

Aluminium-based fibre–metal laminates are lucrative candidates for aerospace manufacturers since they are lightweight and high-strength materials. The flower extract of aerva lanata was studied in order to prevent the effect of corrosion on the aluminium-based fibre–metal laminates (FMLs) in basic media. It is considered an eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor using natural sources. Its flower species belong to the Amaranthaceae family. The results of the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) show that this flower extract includes organic compounds such as aromatic links, heteroatoms, and oxygen, which can be used as an organic corrosion inhibitor in an acidic environment. The effectiveness of the aerva-lanata flower behaviour in acting as an inhibitor of the corrosion process of FMLs was studied in 3.5% NaCl solution. The inhibition efficiency was calculated within a range of concentration of the inhibitor at room temperature, using the weight-loss method, potentiodynamic polarization measurements and electrochemical-impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results indicate a characterization of about 87.02% in the presence of 600 ppm of inhibitor. The Tafel curve in the polarization experiments shows an inhibition efficiency of 88%. The inhibition mechanism was the absorption on the FML surface, and its absorption was observed with the aid of the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. This complex protective film occupies a larger surface area on the surface of the FML. Hence, by restricting the surface of the metallic layer from the corrosive medium, the charge and ion switch at the FML surface is reduced, thereby increasing the corrosion resistance
