A Qualitative Study of Lived Experiences of Black Women in Leadership Positions in K-12 Educational Settings

    Get PDF
Women, particularly African American women, have continued to obtain certifications and fulfill degree requirements, yet are underrepresented in K–12 leadership positions (e.g., administrators, principals, and positions of superintendency; Glass & Franceschini, 2007). This qualitative research study focused on lived experiences of African American/Black women in leadership positions in school districts in the region of King County, Washington. Three research questions guided the study and centered around participants’ lived experience in K–12 leadership positions, factors that contributed to the continued engagement of African American/Black women in K–12 leadership roles, and the extent to which an organization’s culture and espoused values impacted the career progression of African American/Black women. Critical race theory, Black feminist thought, and representative bureaucracy were used as frameworks to better understand participants’ lived experiences as principals and administrators

PREP - Pragmatic Research On Educational Practice

    Get PDF
We investigate a concept called PREP – Pragmatic Research on Educational Practice, with the goal of engaging engineering educators in studying, documenting and sharing their initiatives to improve teaching practices. This concept is compared to other methodologies where the researcher and educational practitioner sometimes coincide. The study is based on a pilot, with six participants following the PREP program for three months, which we study autoethnographically. We also carried out a focus group discussion (n=12) to investigate to what extent university teachers regard the ideas from the PREP program as helpful for studying educational activities and sharing what they do and find

&nbsp

Sjuksköterskans roll i nutritionsarbetet hos äldre på sjukhus. En litteraturstudie.

    Get PDF

Boundary estimates for solutions to linear degenerate parabolic equations

Let Ω ⊂ R n be a bounded NTA-domain and let Ω T = Ω × (0, T ) for some T > 0. We study the boundary behaviour of non-negative solutions to the equation We assume that A(x, t) = {a ij (x, t)} is measurable, real, symmetric and that for some constant β ≥ 1 and for some non-negative and real-valued function λ = λ(x) belonging to the Muckenhoupt class A 1+2/n (R n ). Our main results include the doubling property of the associated parabolic measure and the Hölder continuity up to the boundary of quotients of non-negative solutions which vanish continuously on a portion of the boundary. Our results generalize previous results of Fabes, Kenig, Jerison, Serapioni, se

LILRB1 blockade enhances bispecific T cell engager antibody-induced tumor cell killing by effector CD8+ T cells

Elicitation of tumor cell killing by CD8+ T cells is an effective therapeutic approach for cancer. In addition to using immune checkpoint blockade to reinvigorate existing but unresponsive tumor-specific T cells, alternative therapeutic approaches have been developed, including stimulation of polyclonal T cell cytolytic activity against tumors using bispecific T cell engager (BiTE) molecules that simultaneously engage the TCR complex and a tumor-associated Ag. BiTE molecules are efficacious against hematologic tumors and are currently being explored as an immunotherapy for solid tumors. To understand mechanisms regulating BiTE molecule–mediated CD8+ T cell activity against solid tumors, we sought to define human CD8+ T cell populations that efficiently respond to BiTE molecule stimulation and identify factors regulating their cytolytic activity. We find that human CD45RA+CCR7− CD8+ T cells are highly responsive to BiTE molecule stimulation, are enriched in genes associated with cytolytic effector function, and express multiple unique inhibitory receptors, including leukocyte Ig-like receptor B1 (LILRB1). LILRB1 and programmed cell death protein 1 (PD1) were found to be expressed by distinct CD8+ T cell populations, suggesting different roles in regulating the antitumor response. Engaging LILRB1 with its ligand HLA-G on tumor cells significantly inhibited BiTE molecule–induced CD8+ T cell activation. Blockades of LILRB1 and PD1 induced greater CD8+ T cell activation than either treatment alone. Together, our data suggest that LILRB1 functions as a negative regulator of human CD8+ effector T cells and that blocking LILRB1 represents a unique strategy to enhance BiTE molecule therapeutic activity against solid tumors

The First Nakba Novel? on Standing with Palestine

I wish to take this opportunity to respond to Bart Moore-Gilbert's essay “Palestine, Postcolonialism and Pessoptimism” by suggesting how its concerns might be amplified through a consideration of Ethel Mannin's nakba novel The Road to Beersheba (1963b). I offer my reading of Mannin's novel in the spirit of an unfinished dialogue with Bart Moore-Gilbert's work and as a tribute to his commitment to justice
