    Nutritional valuation of schoolchildren from three Ibero-American countries: A comparative analysis of the references proposed by International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) and World Health Organization (WHO)

    Introducción: El índice de masa corporal (IMC) resulta un indicador útil para valorar la condición nutricional en la infancia y adolescencia. Si bien no existe consenso respecto a los valores o puntos de corte de IMC que deben utilizarse para la diagnosis del sobrepeso, la obesidad o la insuficiencia ponderal, las referencias propuestas por la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) y la International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) son las más aceptadas. No obstante, existen discrepancias importantes en los resultados obtenidos en función de una u otra referencia. Objetivo: Analizar y comparar la condición nutricional de una muestra internacional a partir del IMC, mediante la aplicación simultánea de las referencias recomendadas por la IOTF y la OMS. Métodos: Se calculó el IMC de 1289 escolares de 10 a 13 años de México, Venezuela y España. A cada niño le fue atribuida una categoría nutricional (bajo peso, normopeso, sobrepeso y obesidad) utilizando el criterio de la IOTF (puntos de corte equivalentes a 18,5; 25 y 30 en adultos) y OMS (-1 DE: bajo peso + 1 DE: sobrepeso y +2 DE: obesidad). Las prevalencias de estado nutricional obtenidas por cada criterio fueron comparadas mediante la prueba de Chi-Cuadrado. Resultados: El porcentaje de escolares en cada una de las categorías nutricionales varió significativamente en función de la referencia empleada. La prevalencia de malnutrición por exceso o por defecto fue, en ambos sexos y en los tres países, superior al emplear los parámetros OMS. La referencia OMS evidenció un 10,9% menos de niños normonutridos y un 13,1% más de malnutridos que la IOTF. Discusión: Los resultados de esta investigación permiten inferir que la referencia propuesta por la OMS resulta ser más “preventiva” al momento de identificar individuos malnutridos. Se subraya la importancia de especificar los criterios empleados para la determinación del estado nutricional en los estudios de carácter epidemiológico, así como de contrastar las referencias empleadas para el diagnóstico. Discussion: The results of this research allow inferring that the reference proposed by WHO appears to be more “protecting” when identifying malnourished individuals. The importance of specifying the criteria for determination of nutritional status in epidemiologic studies, as well as to contrast the references used for diagnosis, is emphasized.     Heteropolycompounds as catalysts for biomass product transformations

    [EN] In the present review we show a variety of biomass product transformations through catalysis by both bulk and supported heteropolycompounds. The biomass sources considered include carbohydrates, oils and fats, and terpenes as main starting material groups.     Chemoselective Reductive Heterocyclization by Controlling the Binomial Architecture of Metal Particles and Acid-Base Properties of the Support

The reaction involves a cascade process in which the first step is the redn. of the nitro group into hydroxylamine which subsequently cycles to 2,¿1-¿benzisoxazole through the nucleophilic attack to the carbonyl group in 2-¿position. The reaction was performed on Pt¿/C, Pt¿/TiO2 and Pt¿/MgO using hydrogen as reducing agent under mild reaction conditions. Pt¿/MgO was the most active and selective catalyst. The study of the influence of the crystal size of the metal on the activity and selectivity, combined with the reaction mechanism by in situ FTIR spectroscopy of the adsorbed reactant, showed that max. activity and selectivity to the target compd. can be achieved by controlling the architecture of metal particles and acid-¿base properties of the support. The effect of the temp. on the selectivity, the stability of Pt¿/MgO catalyst, and the scope of the reaction were studied.     Multi-parameter flow cytometry immunophenotyping distinguishes different stages of tuberculosis infection

    Objectives: To identify new potential host biomarkers in blood to discriminate between active TB patients, uninfected (NoTBI) and latently infected contacts (LTBI). Methods: A blood cell count was performed to study parent leukocyte populations. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated and a multi-parameter flow cytometry assay was conducted to study the distribution of basal and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb)-stimulated lymphocytes. Differences between groups and the area under the ROC curve (AUC) were investigated to assess the diagnostic accuracy. Results: Active TB patients presented higher Monocyte-to-lymphocyte and Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratios than LTBI and NoTBI contacts (p0.8). Lymphocyte subsets with differences (p >0.05; AUC >0.7) between active TB and both contact groups include the basal distribution of Th1/Th2 ratio, Th1-Th17, CD4+ Central Memory (TCM) or MAIT cells. Expression of CD154 is increased in Mtb-activated CD4+ TCM and Effector Memory T cells in active TB and LTBI compared to NoTBI. In CD4+T cells, expression of CD154 showed a higher accuracy than IFNγ to discriminate Mtb-specific activation. Conclusions: We identified different cell subsets with potential use in tuberculosis diagnosis. Among them, distribution of CD4 TCM cells and their expression of CD154 after Mtb-activation are the most promising candidates.Xunta de Galicia | Ref. ED431C 2016/04

    Role of mesenchymal stem cells in the remodeling of the extracellular matrix in glioblastoma

    Motivation: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common and malignant brain tumor. Patients who suffer from this malignancy have a median survival rate of approximately 12 months. Current treatments for GBM are surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy (1), but these treatments do not offer a definitive solution. In this context, the cell therapy based on mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) has emerged as a promising alternative to improve the survival of patients (2). Our study aims to investigate the underlying mechanisms by which MSCs could exert beneficial effects in GBM, paying special attention to the extracellular matrix remodeling. Methods: All in vitro and in vivo studies were performed using three experimental groups: U87 glioma cells (U87), U87 glioma cells in the presence of MSCs (U87+MSC), and U87 glioma cells in the presence of MSCs previously pretreated with a substance that improves their therapeutic properties (U87+MSCpret). First, using paraffin-embedding tissuse sections of tumors that were subcutaneously grown in immunosuppressed mice (n=5), we performed a Sirius Red staining to quantify the collagen fibers content. Second, using the transwell coculture system (3),  we conducted an RNA-Seq analysis to evaluate the expression levels of genes involved in extracellular matrix remodeling in the U87 glioma cells of each experimental group (n=3). RT-qPCR was performed to validate the RNA-Seq results (n=3). Values of p <0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: The quantification of the collagen deposition in subcutaneous tumors showed a tendency to decrease in the U87+MSCpret group. In the RNA-Seq analysis, we obtained a list of extracellular matrix-related genes with a significant differential expression (e.g. Mmp28, Hyal1, Col24a1, Cemip, Eln). RT-qPCR results showed a tendency to reduce the expression of genes related to the remodeling of the extracellular matrix, such as Mmp9, Mmp2, Timp1, Timp2 or Tgf-β, in the U87+MSCpret group. Of note, this reduction in the expression levels became significant for Timp1 (p<0.05). Conclusions: Pretreated MSCs prevent the accumulation of collagen in the GMB using in vivo models, which is associated with less invasive tumors. In vitro, we identified that the expression of extracellular matrix proteins tended to decrease in GBM cells when they were co-cultured with pretreated MSCs, suggesting that these cells may reduce tumorigenesis by altering extracellular matrix remodeling

    Intoxicación por consumo de litio en paciente psiquiátricos

    Background: Lithium is the lightest of the alkali metals, it has similar characteristics to sodium and potassium, but when compared it has an even smaller size. Methodology: A narrative review was carried out through various databases from January 2010 to October 2021; The search and selection of articles was carried out in journals indexed in English and Spanish. The following keywords were used: euthanasia, law, family medicine. Results: Lithium can be highly toxic when its prolonged use is extended, since several case reports have been presented with intoxication by this drug. Conclusion: Lithium intoxication is preventable since the patient should be educated in its use and encouraged to carry out frequent checkups and monitoring of lithemia levels.Antecedentes: El litio es el más ligero de los metales alcalinos, este posee características similares al sodio y al potasio, pero comparándose tiene un tamaño aún más pequeño. Metodología: Se realizó una revisión narrativa a través de diversas bases de datos de enero de 2010 a octubre de 2021; la búsqueda y selección de artículos fue llevada a cabo en revistas indexadas en idioma inglés y español. Se utilizaron como palabras clave: litio, intoxicación, pacientes psiquiatricos. Resultados: El litio puede ser altamente toxico cuando se extiende su uso prolongadamente, ya que se han presentado varios reportes de caso con intoxicación por este medicamento. Conclusión: La intoxicación por litio es prevenible puesto que se debe educar al paciente en su uso e incentivar a la realización de chequeos y monitoreos frecuente de los niveles de litemia

    Neurosonological Findings Related to Non-Motor Features of Parkinson’s Disease: A Systematic Review

    Non-motor symptoms (NMS) in Parkinson’s disease (PD), including neuropsychiatric or dysautonomic complaints, fatigue, or pain, are frequent and have a high impact on the patient’s quality of life. They are often poorly recognized and inadequately treated. In the recent years, the growing awareness of NMS has favored the development of techniques that complement the clinician’s diagnosis. This review provides an overview of the most important ultrasonographic findings related to the presence of various NMS. Literature research was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science from inception until January 2021, retrieving 23 prospective observational studies evaluating transcranial and cervical ultrasound in depression, dementia, dysautonomic symptoms, psychosis, and restless leg syndrome. Overall, the eligible articles showed good or fair quality according to the QUADAS-2 assessment. Brainstem raphe hypoechogenicity was related to the presence of depression in PD and also in depressed patients without PD, as well as to overactive bladder. Substantia nigra hyperechogenicity was frequent in patients with visual hallucinations, and larger intracranial ventricles correlated with dementia. Evaluation of the vagus nerve showed contradictory findings. The results of this systematic review demonstrated that transcranial ultrasound can be a useful complementary tool in the evaluation of NMS in PD

    Characterization of the gut microbiome of patients with Clostridioides difficile infection, patients with non–C. difficile diarrhea, and C. difficile–colonized patients

    IntroductionClostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is the main cause of nosocomial diarrhea in developed countries. A key challenge in CDI is the lack of objective methods to ensure more accurate diagnosis, especially when differentiating between true infection and colonization/diarrhea of other causes. The main objective of this study was to explore the role of the microbiome as a predictive biomarker of CDI.MethodsBetween 2018 and 2021, we prospectively included patients with CDI, recurrent CDI (R-CDI), non-CDI diarrhea (NO-CDI), colonization by C. difficile, and healthy individuals. Clinical data and fecal samples were collected. The microbiome was analyzed by sequencing the hypervariable V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene on an Illumina Miseq platform. The mothur bioinformatic pipeline was followed for pre-processing of raw data, and mothur and R were used for data analysis.ResultsDuring the study period, 753 samples from 657 patients were analyzed. Of these, 247 were from patients with CDI, 43 were from patients colonized with C. difficile, 63 were from healthy individuals, 324 were from NOCDI, and 76 were from R-CDI. We found significant differences across the groups in alpha and beta diversity and in taxonomic abundance. We identified various genera as the most significant biomarkers for CDI (Bacteroides, Proteus, Paraprevotella, Robinsoniella), R-CDI (Veillonella, Fusobacterium, Lactobacillus, Clostridium sensu stricto I), and colonization by C. difficile (Parabacteroides, Faecalicoccus, Flavonifractor, Clostridium XVIII).DiscussionWe observed differences in microbiome patterns between healthy individuals, colonized patients, CDI, R-CDI, and NOCDI diarrhea. We identified possible microbiome biomarkers that could prove useful in the diagnosis of true CDI infections. Further studies are warranted
