Approximation of Immersed Surfaces Into a Tetrahedral Mesh Generated by the Meccano Method

    Get PDF
[EN]In this paper, we present a new method to insert open surfaces into an existing tetrahedral mesh generated by the meccano method. The surfaces must be totally immersed in the mesh and must not intersect between them. The strategy includes a mesh refinement to obtain an initial approximation of each surface capturing its geometric features, the projection of the nodes from the approximation onto the actual surface, and the mesh optimization. The proposed method provides a high-quality conformal mesh with interpolations of the inserted surfaces. These approximations are suitable for operations where roughness is a major problem and a smoother solution is required, such as the estimation of normal vectors or the imposition of Neumann conditions.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad del Gobierno de España; CONACYT-SENER Fondo Sectorial CONACYT SENER HIDROCARBURO

In this work we have characterised the Sinorhizobium fredii HH103 greA lpsB lpsCDE genetic region and analysed for the first time the symbiotic performance of Sinorhizobium fredii lps mutants on soybean. The organization of the S. fredii HH103 greA, lpsB, and lpsCDE genes was equal to that of Sinorhizobium meliloti 1021. S. fredii HH103 greA, lpsB, and lpsE mutant derivatives produced altered LPS profiles that were characteristic of the gene mutated. In addition, S. fredii HH103 greA mutants showed a reduction in bacterial mobility and an increase of auto-agglutination in liquid cultures. RT-PCR and qPCR experiments demonstrated that the HH103 greA gene has a positive effect on the transcription of lpsB. Soybean plants inoculated with HH103 greA, lpsB or lpsE mutants formed numerous ineffective pseudonodules and showed severe symptoms of nitrogen starvation. However, HH103 greA and lps mutants were also able to induce the formation of a reduced number of soybean nodules of normal external morphology, allowing the possibility of studying the importance of bacterial LPS in later stages of the S. fredii HH103-soybean symbiosis. The infected cells of these nodules showed signs of early termination of symbiosis and lytical clearance of bacteroids. These cells also had very thick walls and accumulation of phenolic-like compounds, pointing to induced defense reactions. Our results show the importance of bacterial LPS in later stages of the S. fredii HH103-soybean symbiosis and their role in preventing host cell defense reactions. S. fredii HH103 lpsB mutants also showed reduced nodulation with Vigna unguiculata, although the symbiotic impairment was less pronounced than in soybean

A pyrF auxotrophic mutant of Sinorhizobium fredii HH103 impaired in its symbiotic interaction with soybean and other legumes

Transposon Tn5-Mob mutagenesis allowed the selection of a Sinorhizobium fredii HH103 mutant derivative (SVQ 292) that requires the presence of uracil to grow in minimal media. The mutated gene, pyrF, codes for an orotidine-5 ́- monophosphate decarboxylase (EC 4.1.1.23). Mutant SVQ 292 and its parental prototrophic mutant HH103 showed similar Nod-factor and lipopolysaccharide profiles. The symbiotic properties of mutant SVQ 292 were severely impaired with all legumes tested. Mutant SVQ 292 formed small ineffective nodules on Cajanus cajan and abnormal nodules (pseudonodules) unable to fix nitrogen on Glycine max (soybean), Macroptitlium atropurpureum, Indigofera tinctoria, and Desmodium cana-dense. It also did not induce any macroscopic response in Macrotyloma axillare roots. The symbiotic capacity of SVQ 292 with soybean was not enhanced by the addition of uracil to the plant nutritive solution

A component-based approximation for trend detection of intense rainfall in the Spanish Mediterranean coast

    Get PDF
Rainfall behavior is a fundamental issue in areas with scarce and irregular amounts, such as the Spanish Mediterranean region. We identified 12 spatial patterns that characterized 899 torrential precipitation events (≥150 mm in 24 h) that occurred in the 3,537 rainy precipitation series in the period 1950-2020. Three of these components--eastern and ESE--showed positive and significant trends in their accumulated volumes. We then characterized the mean synoptic causes of the 10 most intense events in each component at both mean sea-level pressure and 500 hPa geopotential height, and also the integrated water-vapor transport between 1,000 and 300 hPa. We found a clear spatial distribution of the pluviometric effects related to unstable atmospheric situations (such as troughs and cut-off lows), and also to SW-SE advection fluxes that brought moist air from the Western Mediterranean. In particular, torrential rainfall in the Balearic Islands related more to E-NE advections than to southeastern ones. We also determined that the major parts of these components occurred in early autumn, especially in September and October. We expect these findings to help our understanding of the processes leading to catastrophic situations along the Spanish Mediterranean coast and to lead to improvements in early alert systems and management plans

In this article we propose an approach based on the participative-research and action methodology, that starts in the definition of a participative technical assessment office that considers the interaction of seven thematic lines: collective management of housing rehabilitation, collective management of public spaces, accessibility and sustainable mobility, food sovereignty, financial and economic sovereignty, energy sovereignty and metabolismo, and socio-environmental training and education. The proposal is connecting social initiatives for sustainability, with a bottom-up approach, as the transition and degrowth movements, and the institutional initiatives, with a top-down approach, which raise the foundations of a new sustainable and collaborative planning with an integrated approach to the urban development

Predicting sudden cardiac death in adults with congenital heart disease

    Get PDF
[Objectives] To develop, calibrate, test and validate a logistic regression model for accurate risk prediction of sudden cardiac death (SCD) and non-fatal sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD), based on baseline lesion-specific risk stratification and individual’s characteristics, to guide primary prevention strategies.[Methods] We combined data from a single-centre cohort of 3311 consecutive ACHD patients (50% male) at 25-year follow-up with 71 events (53 SCD and 18 non-fatal SCA) and a multicentre case–control group with 207 cases (110 SCD and 97 non-fatal SCA) and 2287 consecutive controls (50% males). Cumulative incidences of events up to 20 years for specific lesions were determined in the prospective cohort. Risk model and its 5-year risk predictions were derived by logistic regression modelling, using separate development (18 centres: 144 cases and 1501 controls) and validation (two centres: 63 cases and 786 controls) datasets.[Results] According to the combined SCD/SCA cumulative 20 years incidence, a lesion-specific stratification into four clusters—very-low (12%)—was built. Multivariable predictors were lesion-specific cluster, young age, male sex, unexplained syncope, ischaemic heart disease, non-life threatening ventricular arrhythmias, QRS duration and ventricular systolic dysfunction or hypertrophy. The model very accurately discriminated (C-index 0.91; 95% CI 0.88 to 0.94) and calibrated (p=0.3 for observed vs expected proportions) in the validation dataset. Compared with current guidelines approach, sensitivity increases 29% with less than 1% change in specificity.[Conclusions] Predicting the risk of SCD/SCA in ACHD can be significantly improved using a baseline lesion-specific stratification and simple clinical variables.Peer reviewe

Dynamics of isolated-photon plus jet production in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
The dynamics of isolated-photon plus jet production in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV has been studied with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using an integrated luminosity of 37 pb(-1). Measurements of isolated-photon plus jet bin-averaged cross sections are presented as functions of photon transverse energy, jet transverse momentum and jet rapidity. In addition, the bin-averaged cross sections as functions of the difference between the azimuthal angles of the photon and the jet, the photon jet invariant mass and the scattering angle in the photon jet centre-of-mass frame have been measured. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations are compared to the measurements and provide a good description of the data, except for the case of the azimuthal opening angle
