Computational aspects of the prediction of multidimensional transonic flows in turbomachinery
The analytical prediction and description of transonic flow in turbomachinery is complicated by three fundamental effects: (1) the fluid equations describing the transonic regime are inherently nonlinear, (2) shock waves may be present in the flow, and (3) turbomachine blading is geometrically complex, possessing large amounts of curvature, stagger, and twist. A three-dimensional computation procedure for the study of transonic turbomachine fluid mechanics is described. The fluid differential equations and corresponding difference operators are presented, the boundary conditions for complex blade shapes are described, and the computational implementation and mapping procedures are developed. Illustrative results of a typical unthrottled transonic rotor are also presented

Leptogenesis within a generalized quark-lepton symmetry
Quark-lepton symmetry has been shown to be inconsistent with baryogenesis via
leptogenesis in natural schemes of the see-saw mechanism. Within the
phenomenological approach of textures, we relax this strict symmetry and
propose weaker conditions, namely models of the neutrino Dirac mass matrix
which have the same hierarchy as the matrix elements of . We call
this guide-line generalized quark-lepton symmetry. We consider
in detail particular cases in which the moduli of the matrix elements of
are equal to those of . Within the phenomenological approach of textures,
we try for the heavy Majorana mass matrix diagonal and off-diagonal forms. We
find that an ansatz for preserving the hierarchy, together with an
off-diagonal model for the heavy Majorana neutrino mass, is consistent with
neutrino masses, neutrino mixing and baryogenesis via leptogenesis for an
intermediate mass scale GeV. The preservation of the

Boundary conditions for free surface inlet and outlet\ud problems
We investigate and compare the boundary conditions that are to be applied to free surface problems involving inlet and outlets of Newtonian fluid, typically found in coating processes. The flux of fluid is a priori known at an inlet, but unknown at an outlet, where it is governed by the local behaviour near the film-forming meniscus. In the limit of vanishing capillary number Ca it is well-known that the flux scales with Ca2/3, but this classical result is nonuniform as the contact angle approaches . By examining this limit we find a solution that is uniformly valid for all contact angles. Furthermore, by considering the far-field behaviour of the free surface we show that there exists a critical capillary number above which the problem at an inlet becomes over-determined. The implications of this result for the modelling of coating flows are discussed
'It's a Form of Freedom': The experiences of people with disabilities within equestrian sport
This paper explores the embodied, gendered experiences of disabled horse‐riders. Drawing on data from five in‐depth interviews with paradressage riders, the ways in which their involvement in elite disability sport impacts upon their sense of identity and confidence are explored, as well as the considerable health and social benefits that this involvement brings. Social models of disability are employed and the shortcomings of such models, when applied to disability sport, are highlighted. The data presented here demonstrates the necessity of seeing disability sport as an embodied experience and acknowledging the importance of impairment to the experiences of disabled athletes. Living within an impaired body is also a gendered experience and the implications of this when applied to elite disability sport are considered
The European Large Area ISO Survey - ISOPHOT results using the MPIA-pipeline
The European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS) will provide Infrared observations
of 4 regions in the sky with ISO. Around 2000 Infrared sources have been
detected at 7 and 15 microns (with ISOCAM), 90 and 175 microns (with ISOPHOT))
over 13 square degrees of the sky. We present the source extraction pipeline of
the 90 microns ISOPHOT observations, describe and discuss the results obtained

Resting state correlates of subdimensions of anxious affect
Resting state fMRI may help identify markers of risk for affective disorder. Given the comorbidity of anxiety and depressive disorders and the heterogeneity of these disorders as defined by DSM, an important challenge is to identify alterations in resting state brain connectivity uniquely associated with distinct profiles of negative affect. The current study aimed to address this by identifying differences in brain connectivity specifically linked to cognitive and physiological profiles of anxiety, controlling for depressed affect. We adopted a two-stage multivariate approach. Hierarchical clustering was used to independently identify dimensions of negative affective style and resting state brain networks. Combining the clustering results, we examined individual differences in resting state connectivity uniquely associated with subdimensions of anxious affect, controlling for depressed affect. Physiological and cognitive subdimensions of anxious affect were identified. Physiological anxiety was associated with widespread alterations in insula connectivity, including decreased connectivity between insula subregions and between the insula and other medial frontal and subcortical networks. This is consistent with the insula facilitating communication between medial frontal and subcortical regions to enable control of physiological affective states. Meanwhile, increased connectivity within a frontoparietal-posterior cingulate cortex-precunous network was specifically associated with cognitive anxiety, potentially reflecting increased spontaneous negative cognition (e.g., worry). These findings suggest that physiological and cognitive anxiety comprise subdimensions of anxiety-related affect and reveal associated alterations in brain connectivity
