Clouder: a flexible large scale decentralized object store - architecture overview
The current exponential growth of data calls for massive scale capabilities of storage and processing. Such large volumes of data tend to disallow their centralized storage and processing making extensive and flexible data partitioning unavoidable. This is being acknowledged by several major Internet players embracing the Cloud computing model and offering first generation remote storage services with simple processing capabilities. In this position paper we present preliminary ideas for the architecture of a flexible, efficient and dependable fully decentralized object store able to manage very large sets of variable size objects and to coordinate in place processing. Our target are local area large computing facilities composed of tens of thousands of nodes under the same administrative domain. The system should be capable of leveraging massive replication of data to balance read scalability and fault tolerance.(undefined
An evaluation of board practices in Brazil
We survey board practices in Brazil. Brazilian companies are commonly controlled by family groups or through shareholders agreements. Controlling shareholders hold a very large portion of voting shares, much more than the minimum necessary to retain control. There is widespread evidence of shareholder expropriation, legal protection is week, and stock issuance has been halted by low valuations and tax avoidance. Half of the boards are either too small or too big. Board committees are ineffective. Board procedures are rarely formalized and board members and CEOs are not evaluated in most cases. Most board members are not shareholders. No more than 21% of board members are independent and only 2% of them are elected by independent shareholder groups. It is likely the improvements in board structure and procedures be restricted to large public corporations with foreign stock ownership while most companies avoid going public.
promissores, completos e robustos existentes no mercado.
justificam as várias decisões tomadas.Nowadays, one of the most relevant conditions associated to the human being is
security. The preservation of people authenticity to avoid attacks and malicious
invasions are increasing. The appearance of biometric systems work as a way to
solve these issues. Specifically, the usage of iris as a biometric trait incorporated in
a biometric system has been the most promising, complete and robust that can be
offered. There are several applications like airports, laboratories, banks and prisons.
In all of these examples, the subject cooperation with the devices is required allowing
the capture of good quality images to the recognition process.
With the usage of a biometric system, regardless the physical feature, there
are two types of identifications: check if someone is who he says he is or identify the
subject by giving his own identity, if that person is considered an authorized subject.
Considering that the physical traits work as an “allow permission”, the usual issues
associated to the forgotten passwords or the stolen identity cards no longer make
sense. People are they own password.
In this thesis are described several methodologies that respond to all of the iris
recognition steps. However, the proposed methods try to circumvent the patent
created by John Daugman in 1994. This patent is the only one used in the iris
biometric recognition system in the market. Inicially, the proposed methods work
on the iris segmentation. Then, the segmented images go to the normalization
step for a better data manipulation. To conclude, there are methods to determine
witch are the best settings to feature extraction to biometric signature creation. The
several proposed methods are accomplished with test results that justify the token
decisions
Classic cystinosis 1s an inherited metabolic disorder characterized by the accumulation of L-cystine under the form of free crystals in lysosomes of affected patients. Individuais with this disorder may present progressive impairment of kidney activity, leading to dialysis or transplantation before the age of twelve years by total collapse of renal function. Further manifestations of this disorder may include failure to thrive, rickets, diabetes mellitus and many ocular signs typically found on come as and retinas, such as stromal deposits of crystals and a retinal degeneration directly related to the accumulation of cystine as well as alterations on ATP metabolic synthesis in retina itself. Traditionally, cystinosis may be presented under three different clinicai forms: an infantile or classic form, with faster evolution and more severe impairment of renal function (Fanconi's syndrome), bones and eyes, an intermediate or juvenile form and a third form of cytinosis with Iate onset, considered the adult variant. The focus of this disorder may be understood as linked to a variety of mutations on CTNS gene, the encoder of cystinosin synthesis, which is the main cystine transporter throughout lysosomal membrane. Cellular cystine is consequence of direct oxidation of two cysteine molecules. Cysteine, by its tum, is the forerunner of protein synthesis and simultaneously final product of protein hydrolysis. It is obtained from methionine, an essential amino acid. Progressive accumulation of cystine in organs such as kidneys, heart, and the retina has Ied to further questions on what basis creatine kinasis and phosphocreatine shuttle effectively operates and on how the availability of A TP under these circumstances, is held. Clinically, it is considered that the treatment to cystinosis ranges the oral or topical administration of cysteamine. The main purpose of this work was to evaluate the in vitro creatine kinase activity in retina of adult pigs with the presence of cystine under different concentrations and pre-incubation times with or without the addition of cysteamine. Our results demonstrated that the presence of cystine caused a significant inhibition of creatine kinase activity in retinas of these animais, depending on the pre-incubation time and cystine concentration. Thus, cysteamine was able to prevent and revert the inhibitory effects mediated by cystine over the enzyme. If these effects would occur on retina of cystinotic patients, it is likely that the inhibition of creatine kinasis activity consists in one of the mechanisms of cystine toxicity and also one of the mechanisms of action of cysteamine might be prevention and reversion of this inhibition
Based on ethnographic research with cart-drivers, horses, bureaucrats and scientists, I discuss the way in which ideas about evolution and progress have been mobilized to implement governmental policies to end the use of carts in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil in the second decade of the twenty-first century. This article addresses the controversies around animal traction involving gypsies, maroon communities, veterinaries, biologists, anthropologists, parliamentary figures and animal rights activists of divergent ontologies. By exploring the description of a period that witnessed two attempts to criminalize horse-drawn carts and a dispute around the type of horseshoe to be used by working horses, I unfold the diverging concepts about work, animality and humanity put forth by different actors involved in these controversies. This text is the result of fieldwork, extension and assessment with cart-drivers and horses, from participant observation, compiling documents and laws, to the foundation of a social movement and recording a process of dispute escalating into laws being passed to criminalize horses, horse-driven carts and horse-driven cart-drivers.
A correlation-aware data placement strategy for key-value stores
Key-value stores hold the unprecedented bulk of the data
produced by applications such as social networks. Their scalability and
availability requirements often outweigh sacri cing richer data and pro-
cessing models, and even elementary data consistency. Moreover, existing
key-value stores have only random or order based placement strategies.
In this paper we exploit arbitrary data relations easily expressed by the
application to foster data locality and improve the performance of com-
plex queries common in social network read-intensive workloads.
We present a novel data placement strategy, supporting dynamic tags,
based on multidimensional locality-preserving mappings.
We compare our data placement strategy with the ones used in existing
key-value stores under the workload of a typical social network appli-
cation and show that the proposed correlation-aware data placement
strategy o ers a major improvement on the system's overall response
time and network requirements
Comparison between Brazil and the 30 Most Innovative Countries in the World
Innovation can be defined as the implementation of a new or significantly improved product (good or service), or a process, a new marketing method, a new organizational method in business practices, workplace organization, or external relations. This innovation can be measured by several factors such as investments in research and development, the concentration of high-tech companies traded on the stock exchange, among others. The present study aims to perform a cluster analysis to investigate the behavior of the most innovative countries compared to Brazil. The study contemplates a historical series from the years 2012 to 2015 of the 30 most innovative countries in the world having been added to Brazil. In addition, a series of macroeconomic, political and social variables are considered
Selective transfer in the acquisition of english double object constrctions by brazilian learners
The present study investigates the acquisition of the English double object constructions (GOLDBERG, 1995) by Brazilian learners. We hypothesize that, due to first language (L1) influences, the prepositional ditransitive construction (John gave a book to Mary) will be acquired earlier, while the ditransitive construction (John gave Mary a book) will be part of the learner’s interlanguages (SELINKER, 1972) only at the advanced level of proficiency. We also hypothesize that learners may transfer (ODLIN, 1989) the placement of the object pronoun in pre-verbal position from their L1 to their interlanguage in early stages of acquisition (João me deu um livro / *John me gave a book). We test our hypotheses by comparing the performance of three groups of learners (beginning, intermediate, and advanced) and native speakers of English on an acceptability judgment task used as a measure of learnability and generalization. Results confirm the order of acquisition of the English double object constructions predicted for native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese. Moreover, results suggest that, although mother tongue influences may have taken place, they do not do so pervasively, but rather selectively, corroborating the proposal by Kellerman (1983)
