    Trunk Restraint Therapy: The Continuous Use Of The Harness Could Promote Feedback Dependence In Poststroke Patients A Randomized Trial

Twenty hemiparetic chronic stroke patients were selected and randomizedinto2traininggroups: trunkrestraintgroup(TRG) (reachingtraining with trunk restraint) and trunk free group (TFG) (unrestraint reaching). Twenty sessions with 45minutes of training were accomplished. The patientswere evaluated in pretreatment (PRE), posttreatment (POST) and 3 months after the completed training (RET) (follow-up). Main outcome measures were modified Ashworth scale, Barthel index, Fugl-Meyer scale, and kinematic analysis (movement trajectory, velocity, angles). A significant improvement, which maintained in the RET test, was found in the motor (P< 0.001) and functional (P = 0.001) clinical assessments for both groups. For trunk displacement, only TFG obtained a reduction statistical significance fromPRE to the POST test (P = 0.002), supporting this result in the RET test. Despite both groups presenting a significant increase in the shoulder horizontal adduction (P = 0.003), only TRGshowed a significant improvement in the shoulder (P = 0.001 -PRE to POST and RET) and elbow (P = 0.038 -PRE to RET) flexion extension, and in the velocity rate (P = 0.03 -PRE to RET).     Ex vivo exposure to titanium dioxide and silver nanoparticles mildly affect sperm of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) - A multiparameter spermiotoxicity approach

    Nanoparticles (NP) are potentially repmtoxic, which may compromise the success of populations. However, the reprotoxicity of NP is still scarcely addressed in marine fish. Therefore, we evaluated the impacts of environmentally relevant and supra environmental concentrations of titanium dioxide (TiO2: 10 to 10,000 mu g.L-1) and silver NP (Ag: 0.25 to 250 mu g.L-1) on the sperm of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata). We performed short-term direct exposures (ex vivo) and evaluated sperm motility, head morphometry, mitochondrial function, antioxidant responses and DNA integrity. No alteration in sperm motility (except for supra environmental Ag NP concentration), head morphometry, mitochondrial function, and DNA integrity occurred. However, depletion of all antioxidants occurred after exposure to TiO2 NP, whereas SOD decreased after exposure to Ag NP (lowest and intermediate concentration). Considering our results, the decrease in antioxidants did not indicate vulnerability towards oxidative stress.     On the Integration of Industrial Data and Analysis with Simulation in a Company of the Cork Sector

    Nowadays, companies are constantly seeking to develop tools to increase productivity, production flexibility and the quality of their products, or to reduce costs, delays and their exposure to risks. In fact, such improvements can be achieved in the scope of product as well as of process improvement. In industrial contexts, often, such improvements can be achieved by implementing tools to access the intended information in due time, such as Decision Support Tools. Aligned with the aforementioned, this project was developed in the context of a cork industry, dedicated to the agglomeration of cork and other materials, such as rubber, foams and recycled plastics, and the transformation of these same agglomerates into products, such as joints, footwear, floors, consumer goods, acoustic coatings and sports surfaces. More specifically, tools for the automated access to information were developed, namely, a reference search tool that meets the specified requirements of managers from the company, as well as a tool to search the available dimensions or production steps for a given product. Moreover, and infield of process improvement, a set of simulation models were also developed using SIMIO. First, there was a survey and parameterization of the critical factors of the line, so that the simulation could be elaborated, and afterwards the balancing of the system was studied, considering different scenarios. Depending on the type of roll to be produced and according to the type of packaging, the balancing of the system varies. Other scenarios were studied for when the system is not balanced, in order to avoid this occurrence. All in all, the set of tools that were developed led to a considerable reduction of the time spent by human resources on accessing critical information, as well as an improvement of the analysis of their industrial processes

    Efficiency of Phytoseiulus longipes Evans as a control agent of Tetranychus evansi Baker & Pritchard (Acari: Phytoseiidae: Tetranychidae) on screenhouse tomatoes

    The spider mite Tetranychus evansi Baker & Pritchard can cause severe damage to tomato crops. The predatory mite Phytoseiulus longipes Evans was recently reported in association with T. evansi in Uruguaiana, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of P. longipes on the population of T. evansi on tomatoes under screenhouse condition. The study consisted on four experiments, in each of which 80 potted plantlets were distributed in two plots of 40 plantlets each. Two weeks later, each plantlet of both plots was infested with eight adult females of T. evansi; one week after, four adult females of P. longipes were released onto each plant of one plot. The population levels of T. evansi and the damage caused by these mites were significantly lower (P < 0.05; linear mixed-effect model) in the plots where P. longipes had been released.     The time evolution of a topological Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain is analyzed through the statistics of speckle patterns. The emergence of topological edge states dramatically affects the dynamical fluctuations of the wavefunction. The intensity statistics is found to be described by a family of noncentral chi-squared distributions, with the noncentrality parameter reflecting on the degree of edge-state localization. The response of the speckle contrast with respect to the dimerization of the chain is explored in detail as well as the role of chiral symmetry-breaking disorder, number of edge states, their energy gap, and the locations between which the transport occurs. In addition to providing a venue for speckle customization, our results appeal to the use of speckle patterns for characterization of nontrivial topological properties.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Virtual-tissue computer simulations define the roles of cell adhesion and proliferation in the onset of kidney cystic disease

    In autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), cysts accumulate and progressively impair renal function. Mutations in PKD1 and PKD2 genes are causally linked to ADPKD, but how these mutations drive cell behaviors that underlie ADPKD pathogenesis is unknown. Human ADPKD cysts frequently express cadherin-8 (cad8), and expression of cad8 ectopically in vitro suffices to initiate cystogenesis. To explore cell behavioral mechanisms of cad8-driven cyst initiation, we developed a virtual-tissue computer model. Our simulations predicted that either reduced cell-cell adhesion or reduced contact inhibition of proliferation triggers cyst induction. To reproduce the full range of cyst morphologies observed in vivo, changes in both cell adhesion and proliferation are required. However, only loss-of-adhesion simulations produced morphologies matching in vitro cad8-induced cysts. Conversely, the saccular cysts described by others arise predominantly by decreased contact inhibition, that is, increased proliferation. In vitro experiments confirmed that cell-cell adhesion was reduced and proliferation was increased by ectopic cad8 expression. We conclude that adhesion loss due to cadherin type switching in ADPKD suffices to drive cystogenesis. Thus, control of cadherin type switching provides a new target for therapeutic intervention

    Tandem X-ray absorption spectroscopy and scattering forin situtime-resolved monitoring of gold nanoparticle mechanosynthesis

    Current time-resolvedin situapproaches limit the scope of mechanochemical investigations possible. Here we develop a new, general approach to simultaneously follow the evolution of bulk atomic and electronic structure during a mechanochemical synthesis. This is achieved by coupling two complementary synchrotron-based X-ray methods: X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray diffraction. We apply this method to investigate the bottom-up mechanosynthesis of technologically important Au micro and nanoparticles in the presence of three different reducing agents, hydroquinone, sodium citrate, and NaBH4. Moreover, we show how XAS offers new insight into the early stage generation of growth species (e.g.monomers and clusters), which lead to the subsequent formation of nanoparticles. These processes are beyond the detection capabilities of diffraction methods. This combined X-ray approach paves the way to new directions in mechanochemical research of advanced electronic materials.Peer reviewe
