    Contribution for the phytochemical studies of Ageratum fastigiatum

    Organic extracts from leaves plus branches plus inflorescences of Ageratum fastigiatum (Gardner) R. M. King & H. Rob., Asteraceae, were fractionated through classic chromatography. The steroids stigmasterol, chondrillasterol and campesterol were isolated from hexane extract. The triterpenes lupeol, taraxasterol, α-amyrin, β-amyrin, pseudotaraxasterol, lupeol acetate and α-amyrin acetate were isolated from ethyl acetate extract. Steroids and triterpenes were identified by GC-MS. The coumarin ayapin was isolated from ethanol extract and identified by NMR. Essential oils of the fresh leaves and fresh inflorescences were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed for GC-MS. The main components in both essential oils were α-pinene, limonene and germacrene D.FAPEMI

    Epidemiology of COVID-19 in the State of Sergipe/Brazil and Its Relationship with Social Indicators

    A pandemic is capable of generating a great impact, not only from the point of view of health, but also socioeconomically. In March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that a new pandemic situation had arisen, due to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, whose probable origin was zoonotic. The largest number of cases of this disease is concentrated in the United States of America (USA), India, and Brazil. The mortality rate is estimated at 3.4%, but regional differences may exist, and places with a high demographic density have become true epicentres and may be related to higher rates of transmission. In addition to the above, lower human development indexes (HDI) can be related to worse outcomes, especially in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil since they are the least developed places. The Northeast region is the second-most-affected place in the number of COVID-19 cases in Brazil. An analytical observational study of an ecological type was carried out from April to October 2020 to assess the epidemiological situation of COVID-19 in the state of Sergipe and specifically to analyse the incidence of cases and deaths resulting from COVID-19 in the different health regions of the state of Sergipe, in relation to the values of the HDI and demographic density. During the study period, 84,325 cases of COVID-19 were identified, in which 2205 resulted in death. In most of the regions studied, there was a positive association between the number of cases and deaths and the greater the demographic density, but there was no increase in the risk of becoming ill, nor of dying the lower the HDI. Large and crowded cities are places of greatest vulnerability to illness, due to their greater capacity of transmitting the virus; however, further studies are needed to identify other factors that are decisive in the outcomes of this new disease.This research received no external funding.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Predição de função de proteínas através da extração de características físico-químicas

    Com a conclusão do projeto Genoma, o número de novas proteínas descobertas tem crescido, mas devido ao alto custo e da demora dos processos de descoberta da função de proteínas, apenas uma pequena parcela das mesmas tem sua função conhecida. Este trabalho apresenta uma metodologia para predição de função de proteínas através da extração de características de suas estruturas, presentes no banco de dados StingDB, a utilização da Transformada Discreta do Cosseno, a codificação da estrutura primária, o balanceamento de classes e a utilização de Máquinas de Vetores de Suporte. Os valores médios obtidos para a precisão, sensibilidade, acurácia e especificidade foram, respectivamente de 80\%, 71%, 74% e 77%. Os resultados foram comparados com outros trabalhos da literatura, e mostraram um aumento de 10% na taxa de precisão

    Endocarditis in pregnancy and postpartum: cases in a prospective adult cohort and literature review

    Objective: Pregnancy and postpartum infective endocarditis (PPIE), although uncommon, is a very serious condition. To describe cases of infectious endocarditis (IE) in in a cohort of adults with IE in a Brazilian center and to review data from the recent literature on the subject. Methods: Cases of definite IE by the modified Duke criteria in adults were retrieved in a contemporary cohort of adults with IE from January 2006 to December 2020.  Literature review on the topic was carried out and case reports on PPIE from 2014 to 2020 were compiled. Results: Two cases of PPIE were found in 401 adult patients with IE, with a prevalence of 0.5% in the cohort, of 2/139 (1.4%) among women and 2/83 (2.4%) of women of reproductive age (18 -49 years) in this same cohort. The search for published case reports from 2014 to 2020 resulted in 61 episodes of PPIE; in these, 7 pregnant women (11.4%), 10 fetuses (16.4%) and 1 premature newborn (1.6%) died. There was a previous valve predisposition in 12 (19.7%) cases and intravenous drug use in 14(23%). Left-sided valves were the most frequently affected in 41 (67.2%) of the cases. The most common isolated infectious agent was methicillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus in 18/61 (29.5%) patients, although as a group, oral viridans streptococci accounted for 16/61 (26.2%). Valve surgery was done for 70% of patients. Conclusions: Intravenous drug use remained to be the main risk factor for IE. Mortality remained high for mothers and their children, despite the fact surgery was done more frequently in the recent cases. In the case of fever without an obvious focus in pregnant or post-partum women, the diagnosis of IE must be readily considered, especially in those with prosthesis and/or intravenous drug use

    How to improve sustainability in Fused Filament Fabrication (3D Printing) research?

    This review aims to provide an overview of sustainable approaches that can be incorporated into well-known procedures for the development of materials, pre- and post-treatments, modifications, and applications of 3D-printed objects, especially for fused filament fabrication (FFF). Different examples of conductive and non-conductive bespoke filaments using renewable biopolymers, bioplasticizers, and recycled materials are presented and discussed. The main final characteristics of the polymeric materials achieved according to the feedstock, preparation, extrusion, and treatments are also covered. In addition to recycling and remanufacturing, this review also explores other alternative approaches that can be adopted to enhance the sustainability of methods, aiming to produce efficient and environmentally friendly 3D printed products. Adjusting printing parameters and miniaturizing systems are also highlighted in this regard. All these recommended strategies are employed to minimize environmental damage, while also enabling the production of high-quality, economical materials and 3D printed systems. These efforts align with the principles of Green Chemistry, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), and Circular Economy concepts

    Novel Additive Manufactured Multielectrode Electrochemical Cell with Honeycomb Inspired Design for the Detection of Methyl Parathion in Honey Samples

    The development and increase in the number of crops recently have led to the requirement for greater efficiency in world food production and greater consumption of pesticides. In this context, the widespread use of pesticides has affected the decrease in the population of pollinating insects and has caused food contamination. Therefore, simple, low-cost, and quick analytical methods can be interesting alternatives for checking the quality of foods such as honey. In this work, we propose a new additively manufactured (3D-printed) device inspired by a honeycomb cell, with 6 working electrodes for the direct electrochemical analysis of methyl parathion by reduction process monitoring in food and environmental samples. Under optimized parameters, the proposed sensor presented a linear range between 0.85 and 19.6 μmol L–1, with a limit of detection of 0.20 μmol L–1. The sensors were successfully applied in honey and tap water samples by using the standard addition method. The proposed honeycomb cell made of polylactic acid and commercial conductive filament is easy to construct, and there is no need for chemical treatments to be used. These devices based on 6 working electrodes array are versatile platforms for rapid, highly repeatable analysis in food and environment, capable of performing detection in low concentrations

    The validity and reliability of the Portuguese versions of three tools used to diagnose delirium in critically ill patients

    OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study are to compare the sensitivity and specificity of three diagnostic tools for delirium (the Intensive Care Delirium Screening Checklist, the Confusion Assessment Method for Intensive Care Units and the Confusion Assessment Method for Intensive Care Units Flowsheet) in a mixed population of critically ill patients, and to validate the Brazilian Portuguese Confusion Assessment Method for Intensive Care Units. METHODS: The study was conducted in four intensive care units in Brazil. Patients were screened for delirium by a psychiatrist or neurologist using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Patients were subsequently screened by an intensivist using Portuguese translations of the three tools. RESULTS: One hundred and nineteen patients were evaluated and 38.6% were diagnosed with delirium by the reference rater. The Confusion Assessment Method for Intensive Care Units had a sensitivity of 72.5% and a specificity of 96.2%; the Confusion Assessment Method for Intensive Care Units Flowsheet had a sensitivity of 72.5% and a specificity of 96.2%; the Intensive Care Delirium Screening Checklist had a sensitivity of 96.0% and a specificity of 72.4%. There was strong agreement between the Confusion Assessment Method for Intensive Care Units and the Confusion Assessment Method for Intensive Care Units Flowsheet (kappa coefficient = 0.96) CONCLUSION: All three instruments are effective diagnostic tools in critically ill intensive care unit patients. In addition, the Brazilian Portuguese version of the Confusion Assessment Method for Intensive Care Units is a valid and reliable instrument for the assessment of delirium among critically ill patients
