Rhynchocalamus barani Olgun, Avcı, Ilgaz, Üzüm and Yılmaz, 2007 is a small colubrid snake previously known only from the type locality, 34 km east of Dört-yol, Hatay Province from Mediterranean Region of Turkey. A second new locality, Yayladağı, Hatay, Turkey, is reported here in the Mediterranean region of Turkey in this study. The new specimen corresponds fully in morphology, colouration and body scalation with specimens from the type locality

Ventral and lateral spot patterns differentiation between three smooth newt species (Amphibia: Salamandridae: Lissotriton)

The location, shape and area of dark spots on the belly, throat and sides of the body of three closely related species of smooth newts (Lissotriton kosswigi, L. schmidtleri and L. vulgaris) were analysed. Differences were found between species and sexes in the location and shape of dark spots on the belly, throat and lateral surfaces of the body. Discriminant analysis of these spot characteristics allows to identificate of males of all three species with a high degree of confidence (85–91%). In females, only L. vulgaris was correctly distinguished from the other two species (accuracy 81–94%). Anatolian and Thracian populations of L. schmidtleri have very similar patterns of dark spots, which confirm their conspecificity. The differences in the location and size of dark spots make possible successful identification of the species during field research and study of museum specimens. The developed method could be useful for comparative studies of other animal species which have spotted camouflage or aposematic colouration

Comparative morphology of triturus karelinii populations from western and central turkey (amphibia: urodela)

Three different populations of Triturus karelinii from the Aegean region (Bozdağ), eastern Anatolia (Koyulhisar), and the Marmara region (İstanbul) are compared in terms of morphometric measurements and ratios, and features of colouration pattern. The Bozdağ population differs from the Koyulhisar population in eight characters, and from the İstanbul population in ten characters. According to the coefficient of difference, males from Bozdağ differ from Koyulhisar males in three characters, whereas the males from İstanbul differ in two characters. Furthermore, females of the Bozdağ population differ from females from Koyulhisar in three characters, whereas they are different from İstanbul females in two characters. These results show the clear separation of the Bozdağ population from the other two populations. However, in our opinion the Bozdağ population should be re-examined with biochemical methods combined with biological, ecological and behavioural approaches. © 2001 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC

A new subspecies of the Anatolia Newt, Neurergus strauchii munzurensis n. ssp., is described from eastern Anatolia (Tunceli Province, Turkey). The new taxon differs from other related subspecies by its characteristic color pattern especially the number and diameter of spots on head, dorsum, tail and limbs. Its distribution is limited to the type locality (20 km north of Tunceli Province, Turkey)
