    Charged Rotating Black Hole Formation from Thin Shell Collapse in Three Dimensions

    The thin shell collapse leading to the formation of charged rotating black holes in three dimensions is analyzed in the light of a recently developed Hamiltonian formalism for these systems. It is proposed to demand, as a way to reconcile the properties of an infinitely extended solenoid in flat space with a magnetic black hole in three dimensions, that the magnetic field should vanish just outside the shell. The adoption of this boundary condition results in an exterior solution with a magnetic field different from zero at a finite distance from the shell. The interior solution is also found and assigns another interpretation, in a different context, to the magnetic solution previously obtained by Cl\'{e}ment and by Hirschmann and Welch.Comment: 15 pages, no figures. The action is that of Einstein gravity, where the renormalization is achieved through the addition of a single topological term. We generalize this equivalence, proposing an explicit form for the renormalized volume of higher even-dimensional AAdS Einstein manifolds. We also show that evaluating the renormalized bulk gravity action on the conically singular manifold of the replica trick results in an action principle that corresponds to the renormalized volume of the regular part of the bulk, plus the renormalized area of a codimension-2 cosmic brane whose tension is related to the replica index. Renormalized Rényi entropy of odd-dimensional holographic CFTs can thus be obtained from the renormalized area of the brane with finite tension, including the effects of its backreaction on the bulk geometry. The area computation corresponds to an extremization problem for an enclosing surface that extends to the AdS boundary, where the newly defined renormalized volume is considered. © 2018, The Author(s).https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2FJHEP08%282018%2913

    Topological regularization and self-duality in four-dimensional anti-de Sitter gravity

    It is shown that the addition of a topological invariant (Gauss-Bonnet term) to the anti-de Sitter (AdS) gravity action in four dimensions recovers the standard regularization given by holographic renormalization procedure. This crucial step makes possible the inclusion of an odd parity invariant (Pontryagin term) whose coupling is fixed by demanding an asymptotic (anti) self-dual condition on the Weyl tensor. This argument allows to find the dual point of the theory where the holographic stress tensor is related to the boundary Cotton tensor as Tji=±(ℓ2/8πG)CjiT_{j}^{i}=\pm (\ell ^{2}/8\pi G)C_{j}^{i}, which has been observed in recent literature in solitonic solutions and hydrodynamic models.     Evaluating Foreign Aid Effectiveness in Nepal

    Few studies have evaluated the effectiveness of donor aid in addressing health-and education-related Millennium Developmental Goals (MDGs). This research examines foreign aid and its effectiveness in reducing poverty through a case study of four World Bank projects implemented in Nepal from 2000 to 2017. Of the 172 projects identified through the World Bank website, four health-and education-related projects met the inclusion criteria. The evaluation of reports and other documents on projects resulted in two – an HIV project and school sector reform program – identified as effective because they met or exceed their baseline objectives. The two effective projects used a Sector Wide Approach, thus resulting in better results and more long – term impacts. Based on this conclusion, it is recommended that projects implemented in poverty stricken areas use methods that emphasize stakeholder coordination and national leadership

The methodologies used were: ORAC(FL) (oxygen radical absorbance capacity - fluorescein), DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) bleaching and electron spin resonance (ESR). These compounds were studied in homogeneous and heterogeneous media. The results showed that the 7-o-methyleriodictiol and 3-o-methylisorhamnetin are those with the highest antioxidant capacity.http://ref.scielo.org/m82cz

    Vacuum energy in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet AdS gravity

    A finite action principle for Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet AdS gravity is presented. The boundary term, which is different for even and odd dimensions, is a functional of the boundary metric, intrinsic curvature and extrinsic curvature. For even dimensions, the boundary term corresponds to the maximal Chern form of the spacetime, and the asymptotic AdS condition for the curvature suffices for the well-posedness of this action. For odd dimensions, the action is stationary under a boundary condition on the variation of the extrinsic curvature. The background-independent Noether charges associated to asymptotic symmetries are found and the Euclidean continuation of the action correctly describes the black hole thermodynamics in the canonical ensemble. In particular, this procedure leads to a covariant formula for the vacuum energy in odd-dimensional asymptotically AdS spacetimes.Comment: RevTex, 5 pages, accepted for publication in PR

    Information transfer through intraspecific interactions in a lycosid spider

    The transfer of information during agonistic and sexual interactions between adults of Lycosa tarentula fascilventrls is studied. Information theory and correspondence analysis are applied to the intra-individual transition matrices. Information is quantitatively similar regardless of the context and the sex. Similarity arises mainly from the transition between motionless and approaching-signalling patterns. There are no pattems strongly predicting the immediate retreat of the sender and there is a marked predictability of females immediately attacking in their agonistic interactions. Results fit those expected if risk of intraspecific interactions in such a solitary predator was arnong the selective pressures leading to the evolution of communication system

    Effect of ovarian superstimulation on COC collection and maturation in alpacas

    The objective of the present study was to compare the ovarian follicular response, cumulus-oocyte complex (COC) collection rate, and maturational status of COC collected from alpacas subsequent to treatment with two different superstimulatory protocols. Alpacas (n = 7 per group) were treated with: (1) 200 mg of FSH im divided bid for 3 d, plus a single i.v. dose of 1000 IU hCG 24 h after the last FSH treatment, or (2) 1200 IU of eCG as a single i.m. dose, plus a single i.v. dose of 1000 IU of hCG on day 3 after eCG treatment (day 0 = start of superstimulatory treatment). At 20-24 h post-hCG treatment, the ovaries were surgically exposed and COC were collected by needle aspiration of all follicles ≥6 mm. The FSH and eCG treatment groups did not differ with respect to the number of follicles ≥6 mm at the time of COC collection (20.0 ± 7.5 versus 27.0 ± 3.3; P = 0.5), the number of COC collected (26.2 ± 8.4 versus 23.3 ± 3.7; P = 0.7), or the collection rate per follicle aspirated (89% versus 87%; P = 0.7). No differences were detected between FSH- and eCG-treated alpacas in the number of expanded COC collected per alpaca (11.5 ± 2.9 versus 8.8 ± 2.8; P = 0.54), the number of expanded COC in metaphase II (8.5 ± 1.9 versus 6.0 ± 2.1; P = 0.1), or the number of compact COC with ≥3 layers of cumulus cells (12.5 ± 4.3 versus 14.3 ± 2.6; P = 0.72). A greater proportion (P < 0.05) of compact COC collected after FSH treatment matured in vitro to the metaphase II stage than after eCG treatment. Eight expanded alpaca COC were fertilized in vitro with llama sperm, three of which were fixed and stained 18 h after exposure to sperm and five were cultured in vitro. Two of the three stained oocytes were in the pronuclear stage, and all five of the cultured oocytes developed to the two-cell and morula stages at 2 and 7 days, respectively, after in vitro fertilization. In summary, FSH and eCG treatments were equally effective for ovarian superstimulation and oocyte collection. Cumulus-oocyte complexes were collected from more than 80% of follicles aspirated during laparotomy. Nearly one third of the COC collected after superstimulation were in metaphase II, and more than 70% of the remaining COC progressed to metaphase II after in vitro maturation for 26 h, bringing the mean number of oocytes available for in vitro fertilization to 16 per alpaca. Preliminary results support the hypothesis that alpaca oocytes obtained after superstimulation in the absence of progesterone are developmentally competent since morulae developed from all five COC fertilized and cultured in vitro
