    B(E2; 2_(1)^(+) → 0_(1)^(+)) value in Kr^(90)

    A smooth onset of collectivity in Kr^(88,92,94,96) has been determined from reported B(E2; 2_(1)^(+) → 0_(1)^(+)) and E(2+ 1 ) values. This is in contrast to the sudden onset in even-even Zr, Mo, and Sr isotopes. Our objective was to complete the systematics by determining the B(E2; 2+ 1 → 0+ 1 ) value in Kr^(90), which was produced by cold-neutron-induced fission of 235U. The lifetime of the 2+ 1 state in Kr^(90) was measured via the electronic γ -γ timing technique using the EXILL and FATIMA spectrometers. Based on the measured mean lifetime of τ = 15(10) ps, the B(E2; 2_(1)^(+) → 0_(1)^(+)) value of 13^(+26)_(−5) W.u. in Kr^(90) is determined for the first time and the smooth onset of deformation in the even-even Kr isotopes beyond neutron number N = 50 is confirmed

    The mutable nature of particle-core excitations with spin in the one-valence-proton nucleus Sb-133

    The gamma-ray decay of excited states of the one-valence-proton nucleus Sb-133 has been studied using cold-neutron induced fission of U-235 and Pu-241 targets, during the EXILL campaign at the ILL reactor in Grenoble. By using a highly efficient HPGe array, coincidences between gamma-rays prompt with the fission event and those delayed up to several tens of microseconds were investigated, allowing to observe, for the first time, high-spin excited states above the 16.6 mu s isomer. Lifetimes analysis, performed by fast-timing techniques with LaBr3(Ce) scintillators, revealed a difference of almost two orders of magnitude in B(M1) strength for transitions between positive-parity medium-spin yrast states. The data are interpreted by a newly developed microscopic model which takes into account couplings between core excitations (both collective and non-collective) of the doubly magic nucleus Sn-132 and the valence proton, using Skyrme effective interaction in a consistent way. The results point to a fast change in the nature of particle-core excitations with increasing spin. (C) 2016 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.     Spectroscopy of 50^{50}Sc and ab initio calculations of B(M3)B(M3) strengths

    The GRIFFIN spectrometer at TRIUMF-ISAC has been used to study excited states and transitions in 50^{50}Sc following the β\beta-decay of 50^{50}Ca. Branching ratios were determined from the measured γ\gamma-ray intensities, and angular correlations of γ\gamma rays have been used to firmly assign the spins of excited states. The presence of an isomeric state that decays by an M3M3 transition with a B(M3)B(M3) strength of 13.6(7)\,W.u. has been confirmed. We compare with the first {\it ab initio} calculations of B(M3B(M3) strengths in light and medium-mass nuclei from the valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group approach, using consistently derived effective Hamiltonians and M3M3 operator. The experimental data are well reproduced for isoscalar M3M3 transitions when using bare gg-factors, but the strength of isovector M3M3 transitions are found to be underestimated by an order of magnitude

    Abrupt shape transition at neutron number N=60: B(E2) values in Sr-94,Sr-96,Sr-98 from fast gamma-gamma timing

    Lifetimes of low-lying yrast states in neutron-rich Sr-94,Sr-96,Sr-98 have been measured by Germanium-gated gamma-gamma fast timing with LaBr3(Ce) detectors using the EXILL& FATIMA spectrometer at the Institut Laue-Langevin. Sr fission products were generated using cold-neutron-induced fission of 235U and stopped almost instantaneously within the thick target. The experimental B(E2) values are compared with results of Monte Carlo shell-model calculations made without truncation on the occupation numbers of the orbits spanned by eight proton and eight neutron orbits and show good agreement. Similarly to the Zr isotopes, the abrupt shape transition in the Sr isotopes near neutron number N = 60 is identified as being caused by many-proton excitations to its g(9/2) orbit

    Are generalist batterers different from generally extra-family violent men? A study among imprisoned male violent offenders

    Research on male batterers has found that in some cases of severe intimate partner violence (IPV) against women, male aggressors were also generally violent beyond the family realm. These findings have been used by researchers to illustrate the common etiology of both general and IPV. Using data from imprisoned male violent offenders, we analyzed the individual, family, and community characteristics of two groups of violent offenders: generalist batterers (GB) and generally extra-family violent men (GEVM). GB offenders had a judicial sentence on IPV-related offenses (gender violence according to the Spanish legislation), while GEVM offenders did not have any IPV-related judicial sentence. The sample includes 153 imprisoned male violent offenders of the Penitentiary Center of Villabona (Asturias, Spain). Sociodemographic measures, and criminal and justice official records of participants are available. Two groups of participants (GB and GEVM) distinction was done based on official records. Multivariate analyses of covariance (MANCOVA) was carried out to study differences between each group of participants in self-reported measures of personal, family, and community context variables. MANCOVA showed no statistical differences among the individual, family, and community characteristics of these two groups, giving empirical support to the theoretical view that general violence and IPV might share a common etiology. These results are discussed in light of the debate about the potentially common etiology of these two types of violence

    El modelo de interdependencia actor-pareja en el estudio de la agresión y la victimización en la pareja: un estudio empírico de 361 díadas

    Studies of intimate partner violence (IPV) have generally focused on only one partner. Although this has allowed advances in scientific knowledge on the causes of IPV, currently recent literature is demanding the need to study both members of the couple. Methodologically, the study of dyads requires the use of appropriate statistical techniques to avoid possible systematic biases (for example, type I error due to dependence of observations). We used the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model to study aggression and victimization in 361 heterosexual couples of young adults. The results indicated, on the one hand, that self-reported mutual aggression was found in more than 50% of the couples. On the other hand, we found that participants’ victimization was largely predicted by their own aggressive behavior towards the other member of the couple. While this result suggests the existence of a victim-offender overlap, it may also hide an upwards victimization scores bias: when participants are aggressive toward their partners, they may bias their victimization scores upwards to justify their levels of aggression (“I was aggressive because I felt victimized”).Los estudios sobre la violencia de pareja (en inglés IPV) generalmente han centrado sus análisis sólo en uno de los miembros. Aunque esto ha permitido avanzar en el conocimiento de las causas de la IPV, la literatura reciente ha señalado la necesidad de estudiar a los dos miembros de la pareja. Metodológicamente el estudio de las parejas requiere el uso de técnicas estadísticas apropiadas para evitar posibles sesgos sistemáticos (por ejemplo, error tipo I debido a la dependencia de las observaciones). En este estudio utilizamos el modelo de interdependencia actorpareja para el estudio de la agresión y la victimización en 361 parejas jóvenes heterosexuales de jóvenes adultos. Los resultados indicaban, por una parte, que había agresión mutua autoinformada en más de la mitad de las parejas. Por otro lado, encontramos que el principal predictor de la victimización de los participantes fue su propio comportamiento agresivo hacia el otro miembro de la pareja. Este resultado sugiere que la víctima y el agresor son la misma persona.     Search for shape-coexisting 0(+) states in Ni-66 from lifetime measurements

    The lifetime of the 0(3)(+) state in Ni-66, two neutrons below the N = 40 subshell gap, has been measured. The transition B(E2; 0(3)(+) -> 2(1)(+)) is one of the most hindered E2 transitions in the Ni isotopic chain and it implies that, unlike Ni-68, there is a spherical structure at low excitation energy. We have performed extensive shell-model calculations that correctly predict this result, obtaining a spherical 0(+) state at the correct energy and with an extremely low B(E2; 0(3)(+)-> 2(1)(+)) value

    Assessment of New Photosensors for Fast Timing Applications with Large Scintillator Detectors

Valencia, Spain, 23-29 October 2011The measurement of absolute nuclear transition probabilities is a very sensitive tool to study the structure of the atomic nucleus. Direct access to transition rates can be achieved via the lifetime of the nuclear levels de-populated in radioactive decay. The Advanced Time-Delayed (ATD) method, or Fast Timing, is a well-established technique to measure lifetimes down to a few ps. The development of the technique was based on the use of BaF_2 detectors, but a recent major breakthrough occurred with the introduction of LaBr_3(Ce) crystals, uniting excellent time response with much superior energy resolution than BaF_2 crystals. Relatively large LaBr_3(Ce) cylindrical detectors of typically 1.5"×1.5" are employed for fast timing, in combination with fast 2-inch photomultiplier tubes from Photonis such as the linear focused 8-stage XP20D0. Another option for a 2-inch fast phototube is the 8-stage Hamamatsu R9779, whose timing properties have already been tested with small LSO crystals. New possibilities are also offered by novel photosensors such as silicon photomultipliers, which are intrinsically fast.
