    Plasma phosphorylated-tau181 as a predictive biomarker for Alzheimer’s amyloid, tau and FDG PET status

    Plasma phosphorylated-tau181 (p-tau181) showed the potential for Alzheimer’s diagnosis and prognosis, but its role in detecting cerebral pathologies is unclear. We aimed to evaluate whether it could serve as a marker for Alzheimer’s pathology in the brain. A total of 1189 participants with plasma p-tau181 and PET data of amyloid, tau or FDG PET were included from ADNI. Cross-sectional relationships of plasma p-tau181 with PET biomarkers were tested. Longitudinally, we further investigated whether different p-tau181 levels at baseline predicted different progression of Alzheimer’s pathological changes in the brain. We found plasma p-tau181 significantly correlated with brain amyloid (Spearman ρ = 0.45, P 18.85 pg/ml) at baseline had a higher risk of pathological progression in brain amyloid (HR: 2.32, 95%CI 1.32–4.08) and FDG PET (3.21, 95%CI 2.06–5.01) status. Plasma p-tau181 may be a sensitive screening test for detecting brain pathologies, and serve as a predictive biomarker for Alzheimer’s pathophysiology

    Предложен подход к проектированию архитектуры программно-технического комплекса автоматизированной системы мониторинга обстановки в реальном времени, основанный на классификации решаемых функциональных задач на основе методов кластерного анализа и выбранного множества признаков подобия. Разработанный подход позволяет из множества функций системы выделить подобные (по определенным признакам) и объединить их в архитектурные компоненты (унифицированные функциональные модули).Запропоновано підхід до проектування архітектури центру обробки інформації автоматизованої системи моніторингу середовища в реальному часі, що заснований на класифікації функціональних задач на підставі методів кластерного аналізу і обраної множини ознак схожості. Розроблений підхід дозволяє вибрати із множини функцій системи схожі (за певними ознаками) і поєднати їх в архітектурні компоненти (уніфіковані функціональні модулі).The approach to designing architecture of the information processing complex of the automated real time conditions monitoring system based on classification of functional tasks on the basis of methods of cluster analysis and the chosen set of similarity attributes is offered. The developed approach allows to allocate from a set of functions the systems similar (on certain attributes) and to unite them in architectural components (unified functional modules)

    Global patient outcomes after elective surgery: prospective cohort study in 27 low-, middle- and high-income countries.

    BACKGROUND: As global initiatives increase patient access to surgical treatments, there remains a need to understand the adverse effects of surgery and define appropriate levels of perioperative care. METHODS: We designed a prospective international 7-day cohort study of outcomes following elective adult inpatient surgery in 27 countries. The primary outcome was in-hospital complications. Secondary outcomes were death following a complication (failure to rescue) and death in hospital. Process measures were admission to critical care immediately after surgery or to treat a complication and duration of hospital stay. A single definition of critical care was used for all countries. RESULTS: A total of 474 hospitals in 19 high-, 7 middle- and 1 low-income country were included in the primary analysis. Data included 44 814 patients with a median hospital stay of 4 (range 2-7) days. A total of 7508 patients (16.8%) developed one or more postoperative complication and 207 died (0.5%). The overall mortality among patients who developed complications was 2.8%. Mortality following complications ranged from 2.4% for pulmonary embolism to 43.9% for cardiac arrest. A total of 4360 (9.7%) patients were admitted to a critical care unit as routine immediately after surgery, of whom 2198 (50.4%) developed a complication, with 105 (2.4%) deaths. A total of 1233 patients (16.4%) were admitted to a critical care unit to treat complications, with 119 (9.7%) deaths. Despite lower baseline risk, outcomes were similar in low- and middle-income compared with high-income countries. CONCLUSIONS: Poor patient outcomes are common after inpatient surgery. Global initiatives to increase access to surgical treatments should also address the need for safe perioperative care. STUDY REGISTRATION: ISRCTN5181700

    Insect pests are considered the major hurdle in enhancing the production and productivity of any farming system. The use of conventional synthetic pesticides has led to the emergence of pesticide-resistant insects, environmental pollution, and negative effects on natural enemies, which have caused an ecological imbalance of the predator-prey ratio and human health hazards; therefore, eco-friendly alternative strategies are required. The plant kingdom, a rich repertoire of secondary metabolites, can be tapped as an alternative for insect pest management strategies. A number of plants have been documented to have insecticidal properties against various orders of insects in vitro by acting as antifeedants, repellents, sterilant and oviposition deterrents, etc. However, only a few plant compounds are applicable at the field level or presently commercialised.     Phytochemistry And The Anti-Bacterial Properties Of The Leaf Extracts Of Napolenaea imperialis (Mkpodu)

    Methods: Leaf of Napolenaea imperialis was chemically screened for the presence, tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, reducing sugar, phenols, steroid, fats and oils. Result: The antimicrobial study of Napolenaea imperialis showed that the aqueous extract of this plant inhibited the growth of the test organisms in the order of klebsiella spp > Staphyoccus, aureus and Escherichia coli> Pseudomonas aeruginosa > Coliform, while the anti-microbial study of the ethanol extract of Napolenaea imperialis inhibited the growth of the test organisms in the order of klebsiella spp and Escherichia coli > Staphylococcus aureus > pseudomonas aeruginosa and Coliform. Conclusion: Its anti-microbial activities and the presence of some bioactive agents support its use in herbal medicine.     Fixed bed column adsorption of Cu (II) onto maize tassel-PVA beads

    The intention of this study was to explore the efficacy and feasibility for Cu (II) adsorption onto fixed bed column of maize tassel-PVA beads. The effects of flow rate and bed height were explored. The Thomas, Adams and Bohart and Yoon-Nelson models were analysed to evaluate the column adsorption performance. The adsorption rate constant and correlation coefficient associated to each model for column adsorption was calculated. Thomas model indicated that increase in column height and flow rate increased the values of kTh and qo. Thereafter, the value of qo decreased with decreasing bed height. With Adam-Bohart model, the values of kAB increased as the flow rate and the bed height increased and continued to increase with decrease in bed height. However, the value of No first increased with increase in flow rate and bed height, but later decreased with decrease in bed height. This suggests that the overall system kinetics may have been influenced by external mass transfer, particularly in the initial part of adsorption in the column. In the case of Yoon-Nelson model, the rate constant kYN and τ increased with increase in bed height and flow rate. However, decrease in bed height at a flow rate of 2.33 × 10-3 L min-1 resulted in an increase in τ while the values of kYN decreased. The three models gave high values of R2 (0.9694-0.98920), although the Adam-Bohart model values were, on average, the least. Therefore, it can be said that both the Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models describe the behavior of the adsorption of Cu (II) in a fixed-bed column better than Adam-Bohart.This Research was supported by the International Cooperation Unit (facilitated by Dr B.
