The Cauchy problem for a class of two-dimensional nonlocal nonlinear wave equations governing anti-plane shear motions in elastic materials
This paper is concerned with the analysis of the Cauchy problem of a general
class of two-dimensional nonlinear nonlocal wave equations governing anti-plane
shear motions in nonlocal elasticity. The nonlocal nature of the problem is
reflected by a convolution integral in the space variables. The Fourier
transform of the convolution kernel is nonnegative and satisfies a certain
growth condition at infinity. For initial data in Sobolev spaces,
conditions for global existence or finite time blow-up of the solutions of the
Cauchy problem are established.Comment: 15 pages. "Section 6 The Anisotropic Case" added and minor changes.

The impact of a bariatric rehabilitation service on weight loss and psychological adjustment - study protocol
Bariatric surgery is currently the most effective form of obesity management for those whose BMI is greater than 40 (or 35 with co morbidities). A minority of patients, however, either do not show the desired loss of excess weight or show weight regain by follow up. Research highlights some of the reasons for this variability, most of which centres on the absence of any psychological support with patients describing how although surgery fixes their body, psychological issues relating to dietary control, self esteem, coping and emotional eating remain neglected. The present study aims to evaluate the impact of a health psychology led bariatric rehabilitation service (BRS) on patient health outcomes. The bariatric rehabilitation service will provide information, support and mentoring pre and post surgery and will address psychological issues such as dietary control, self esteem, coping and emotional eating. The package reflects the rehabilitation services now common place for patients post heart attack and stroke which have been shown to improve patient health outcomes
Optimum growth window for InAs/GaInSb superlattice materials tailored for very long wavelength infrared detection
The authors report growth studies to develop an InAs/GaInSb superlattice (SL) material for very long wavelength infrared detection. They select a SL structure of 47.0âĂ
InAs/21.5âĂ
Ga0.75In0.25Sb that is designed for the greatest possible detectivity, and tune growth conditions to achieve the best quality ternary material. Since the material quality of grown layers is particularly sensitive to extrinsic defects such as nonradiative recombination centers generated during the growth process, the authors investigate the effect of the growth temperature (Tg) on the spectral photoresponse (PR) and carrier recombination lifetime using photoconductivity and time-resolved differential reflectivity measurements. Results indicate that a molecular beam epitaxy growth process the authors developed produces a consistent energy gap around 50âmeV, determined from the PR spectra, but the intensity of the spectra is sensitive to Tg. For SLs grown at Tg between 390 and 470â°C, the PR signal intensity gradually increases as Tg increases from 400 to 440â°C, reaching a maximum at 440â°C. Outside this growth window, the SL quality deteriorates very rapidly. However, the carrier recombination lifetime measured at 300âK was not sensitive to Tg. Although the SL sample grown at 430â°C produced the longest lifetime of 84 ns, the average 300âK lifetime value remained around 74âns
First Results from the CHARA Array. II. A Description of the Instrument
The CHARA Array is a six 1-m telescope optical/IR interferometric array
located on Mount Wilson California, designed and built by the Center for High
Angular Resolution Astronomy of Georgia State University. In this paper we
describe the main elements of the Array hardware and software control systems
as well as the data reduction methods currently being used. Our plans for
upgrades in the near future are also described
Energy Spectrum Evolution of a Diffuse Field in Elastic Body Caused by Weak Nonlinearity
We study the evolution of diffuse elastodynamic spectral energy density under
the influence of weak nonlinearity. It is shown that the rate of change of this
quantity is given by a convolution of the linear energy at two frequencies.
Quantitative estimates are given for sample aluminum and fused silica blocks of

Wavelet treatment of the intra-chain correlation functions of homopolymers in dilute solutions
Discrete wavelets are applied to parametrization of the intra-chain two-point
correlation functions of homopolymers in dilute solutions obtained from Monte
Carlo simulation. Several orthogonal and biorthogonal basis sets have been
investigated for use in the truncated wavelet approximation. Quality of the
approximation has been assessed by calculation of the scaling exponents
obtained from des Cloizeaux ansatz for the correlation functions of
homopolymers with different connectivities in a good solvent. The resulting
exponents are in a better agreement with those from the recent renormalisation
group calculations as compared to the data without the wavelet denoising. We
also discuss how the wavelet treatment improves the quality of data for
correlation functions from simulations of homopolymers at varied solvent
conditions and of heteropolymers.Comment: RevTeX, 19 pages, 7 PS figures. Accepted for publication in PR
Predicting the public health benefit of vaccinating cattle against Escherichia coli O157
Identifying the major sources of risk in disease transmission is key to designing effective controls. However, understanding of transmission dynamics across species boundaries is typically poor, making the design and evaluation of controls particularly challenging for zoonotic pathogens. One such global pathogen is Escherichia coli O157, which causes a serious and sometimes fatal gastrointestinal illness. Cattle are the main reservoir for E. coli O157, and vaccines for cattle now exist. However, adoption of vaccines is being delayed by conflicting responsibilities of veterinary and public health agencies, economic drivers, and because clinical trials cannot easily test interventions across species boundaries, lack of information on the public health benefits. Here, we examine transmission risk across the cattleâhuman species boundary and show three key results. First, supershedding of the pathogen by cattle is associated with the genetic marker stx2. Second, by quantifying the link between shedding density in cattle and human risk, we show that only the relatively rare supershedding events contribute significantly to human risk. Third, we show that this finding has profound consequences for the public health benefits of the cattle vaccine. A naĂŻve evaluation based on efficacy in cattle would suggest a 50% reduction in risk; however, because the vaccine targets the major source of human risk, we predict a reduction in human cases of nearly 85%. By accounting for nonlinearities in transmission across the humanâanimal interface, we show that adoption of these vaccines by the livestock industry could prevent substantial numbers of human E. coli O157 cases

Cobalt and nickel uptake by silica-based extractants
The pKas of ethyl/butyl phosphonate silica (EBP-Si) have been determined, and the removal of cobalt and nickel from solution was investigated as a function of various parameters and compared with those of Purolite S950. pH uptake experiments suggested a combination of ion exchange and acid dissociation of the surface occurring. Isotherm data, fitted using the Langmuir and DubininâRadushkevich (D-R) models, indicated that stronger complexes formed with S950 than with EBP-Si. Kinetic data, fitted using a pseudo-second-order model, suggested that the rate-determining process is the reaction of metal ions with the chelating functionality of the resin. Uptake by EBP-Si is two to three times faster than that on S950
