Methane Abundance Variations toward the Massive Protostar NGC 7538 : IRS9

Absorption and emission lines originating from the nu3 C-H stretching manifold of gas phase CH4 were discovered in the high resolution (R=25,000) infrared L band spectrum along the line of sight toward NGC 7538 : IRS9. These observations provide a diagnostic of the complex dynamics and chemistry in a massive star forming region. The line shapes resemble P Cygni profiles with the absorption and emission components shifted by ~7 km/s with respect to the systemic velocity. Similar velocity components were observed in CO at 4.7 um, but in contrast to CH4, the CO shows deep absorption due to a high velocity outflow as well as absorption at the systemic velocity due to the cold outer envelope. It is concluded that the gas phase CH4 abundance varies by an order of magnitude in this line of sight: it is low in the envelope and the outflow (X[CH4]<0.4e-6), and at least a factor of 10 larger in the central core. The discovery of solid CH4 in independent ground and space based data sets shows that methane is nearly entirely frozen onto grains in the envelope. It thus appears that CH4 is formed by grain surface reactions, evaporates into the gas phase in the warm inner regions of protostellar cores and is efficiently destroyed in shocks related to outflows.Comment: Scheduled for publication in ApJ 615, 01 Nov. 2004. 11 page

The problem of this study was to determine the effects of changes in routine on aerobic participants. It led to the development of the following hypothesis: When knowing the routine, aerobic participants will receive a more effective workout than when the routine is unknown

Sensory evaluation of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) extended to include the quality factor "harmony"

    Get PDF
Sensory evaluation of olive oil, meaning the official organoleptic assessment of olive oil respectively the "Panel Test" (PT), is based on the standards of the International Olive Council (IOC), as well as on the Regulation (EC) 640/2008 of the European Commission. These regulations lead to the classification of olive oil as "extra virgin" (EVOO), "virgin" (VOO) or "lampant", which however is not sufficient to clearly discriminate between different quality levels within the grade EVOO. The objective of the study at hand was to develop and validate an objective sensory evaluation method for the quality certification of olive oil within the grade EVOO. A new rating system, including a detailed description and evaluation of the complexity and persistence of flavour, was established. First, a comparison between different profile sheets from various olive oil competitions (Ercole Olivario, Premio Biol, Leone D'Oro Mario Solinas Award, among others) and the official profile sheet from the IOC/EC for the panel test (PT) took place. In consecutive steps the basic test procedure from the panel test (PT) then was extended with additional sensory descriptors. Two trained olive oil panels (the German Olive Oil Panel (DOP) and the Swiss Olive Oil Panel (SOP)) were further educated to profile various green and ripe aroma components and to evaluate the complexity of the perceived aroma components and their persistency (descriptor: "harmony/persistency"). This extended methodology was cross-validated over a time period of 3 years between the two panels (DOP/SOP)

    Ultra-Low-Power Superconductor Logic

We have developed a new superconducting digital technology, Reciprocal Quantum Logic, that uses AC power carried on a transmission line, which also serves as a clock. Using simple experiments we have demonstrated zero static power dissipation, thermally limited dynamic power dissipation, high clock stability, high operating margins and low BER. These features indicate that the technology is scalable to far more complex circuits at a significant level of integration. On the system level, Reciprocal Quantum Logic combines the high speed and low-power signal levels of Single-Flux- Quantum signals with the design methodology of CMOS, including low static power dissipation, low latency combinational logic, and efficient device count.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

A STUDY OF THE STATISTICAL PROPERTIES OF TWO MEASURES OF COMPETITION

In competition studies, two species are studied, generally in ratios of 1:0, 3:1, 1:1, 1:3,and 0: 1. The standard measure of competition is the Relative Crowding Coefficient (RCC)..

Structural Heat Intercept, Insulation and Vibration Evaluation Rig (SHIIVER)

    Get PDF
The Structural Heat Intercept, Insulation, and Vibration Evaluation Rig (SHIIVER) is a large scale cryogenic fluid management (CFM) test bed designed to scale CFM technologies for inclusion on large, in-space stages. A part of the evolvable Cryogenics (eCryo) project, SHIIVER is a technology development task that is supportive of future exploration propulsion needs. Technologies developed under the eCryo Project will play a critical role in enabling increasingly longer duration in-space missions beyond Low Earth Orbit (LEO)

Academic Librarianship and the Redefining Scholarship Project: A Report from the Association of College and Research Libraries Task Force on Institutional Priorities and Faculty Rewards

    Get PDF
At the July, 1996 Annual Conference of the American Library Association, the Board of Directors of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) appointed a task force to write a formal statement defining and describing the kind of scholarship performed by academic librarians, using as a framework the taxonomy developed by Eugene Rice and elaborated by Ernest Boyer in his 1990 book Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities of the Professoriate.(1) The task force\u27s statement, upon approval by the ACRL Board, is intended to become part of a larger movement established by Syracuse University\u27s Center for Instructional Development, entitled the Institutional Priorities and Faculty Rewards project. The project, which is being funded by the Lilly Endowment, with support from the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, is providing assistance to academic associations for the development and dissemination of definitions of scholarship for their disciplines. The definitions are intended to extend the range of activities recognized as scholarly for the purposes of tenure, promotion, merit, or reward system guidelines. The following is the report of the ACRL task force
