    Powering Growth:The role of hydrogen internal combustion engines in non-road mobile machinery

    This report provides the output of the “Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine Subgroup” an industry-led “Task and Finish Group” convened by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) for the Off-taker Group of the Hydrogen Delivery Council (HDC) who, during the first half of 2024, were charged with the job of considering the latest evidence on the role of hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2ICE) as a decarbonisation option for diesel engines, primarily in non-road mobile machinery (NRMM). The scope of this industry-led process was to focus on the opportunities and challenges associated with the  application and use   of hydrogen in internal combustion engines in the NRMM environment  and   make recommendations on how these issues might be addressed. It should be noted that the wider, supply-side considerations such as production, transport and distribution of hydrogen is out of scope, being the responsibility of other HDC sub-groups. Importantly, the specific examination of H2ICE’s role in the NRMM sector, which is considered one of the hardest to decarbonise, stems from industry’s concern that the generally held assumption within policymakers that decarbonisation technologies are largely electric, either battery or hydrogen fuel cell, and the consequent belief that there is no role for combustion engines in the net zero future, will both risk delivery of targets by 2050 and lead to significant negative economic impacts in the transition, if not addressed

    Newborn screening in metachromatic leukodystrophy – European consensus-based recommendations on clinical management

    Introduction: Metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) is a rare autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder resulting from arylsulfatase A enzyme deficiency, leading to toxic sulfatide accumulation. As a result affected individuals exhibit progressive neurodegeneration. Treatments such as hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and gene therapy are effective when administered pre-symptomatically. Newborn screening (NBS) for MLD has recently been shown to be technically feasible and is indicated because of available treatment options. However, there is a lack of guidance on how to monitor and manage identified cases. This study aims to establish consensus among international experts in MLD and patient advocates on clinical management for NBS-identified MLD cases. Methods: A real-time Delphi procedure using eDELPHI software with 22 experts in MLD was performed. Questions, based on a literature review and workshops, were answered during a seven-week period. Three levels of consensus were defined: A) 100%, B) 75–99%, and C) 50–74% or >75% but >25% neutral votes. Recommendations were categorized by agreement level, from strongly recommended to suggested. Patient advocates participated in discussions and were involved in the final consensus. Results: The study presents 57 statements guiding clinical management of NBS-identified MLD patients. Key recommendations include timely communication by MLD experts with identified families, treating early-onset MLD with gene therapy and late-onset MLD with HSCT, as well as pre-treatment monitoring schemes. Specific knowledge gaps were identified, urging prioritized research for future evidence-based guidelines. Discussion: Consensus-based recommendations for NBS in MLD will enhance harmonized management and facilitate integration in national screening programs. Structured data collection and monitoring of screening programs are crucial for evidence generation and future guideline development. Involving patient representatives in the development of recommendations seems essential for NBS programs

    Ultralight vector dark matter search using data from the KAGRA O3GK run

    Among the various candidates for dark matter (DM), ultralight vector DM can be probed by laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors through the measurement of oscillating length changes in the arm cavities. In this context, KAGRA has a unique feature due to differing compositions of its mirrors, enhancing the signal of vector DM in the length change in the auxiliary channels. Here we present the result of a search for U(1)B−L gauge boson DM using the KAGRA data from auxiliary length channels during the first joint observation run together with GEO600. By applying our search pipeline, which takes into account the stochastic nature of ultralight DM, upper bounds on the coupling strength between the U(1)B−L gauge boson and ordinary matter are obtained for a range of DM masses. While our constraints are less stringent than those derived from previous experiments, this study demonstrates the applicability of our method to the lower-mass vector DM search, which is made difficult in this measurement by the short observation time compared to the auto-correlation time scale of DM

    Physical binding energies using the electron localization function in 4-hydroxyphenylboronic acid co-crystals with aza donors

    Binding energies are traditionally simulated using cluster models by computation of each synthon for each individual co-crystal former. However, our investigation of the binding strengths using the electron localization function (ELF) reveals that these can be determined directly from the crystal supercell computations. We propose a new modeling protocol for the computation of physical binding energies directly from bulk simulations using ELF analysis. In this work, we establish a correlation between ELF values and binding energies calculated for co-crystals of 4-hydroxyphenylboronic acid (4HPBA) with four different aza donors using density functional theory with varying descriptions of dispersion. Boronic acids are gaining significant interest in the field of crystal engineering, but theoretical studies on their use in materials are still very limited. Here, we present a systematic investigation of the non-covalent interactions in experimentally realized co-crystals. Prior diffraction studies on these complexes have shown the competitive nature between the boronic acid functional group and the para-substituted phenolic group forming heteromeric interactions with aza donors. We determine the stability of the co-crystals by simulating their lattice energies, and the different dispersion descriptions show similar trends in lattice energies and lattice parameters. Our study bolsters the experimental observation of the boronic acid group as a competitive co-crystal former in addition to the well-studied phenolic group. Further research on correlating ELF values for physical binding could potentially transform this approach to a viable alternative for the computation of binding energies

    Safe and reliable venous access is mandatory in modern health care, but central venous catheters (CVCs) are associated with significant morbidity and mortality, This paper describes current Swedish guidelines for clinical management of CVCs The guidelines supply updated recommendations that may be useful in other countries as well. Literature retrieval in the Cochrane and Pubmed databases, of papers written in English or Swedish and pertaining to CVC management, was done by members of a task force of the Swedish Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine. Consensus meetings were held throughout the review process to allow all parts of the guidelines to be embraced by all contributors. All of the content was carefully scored according to criteria by the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine. We aimed at producing useful and reliable guidelines on bleeding diathesis, vascular approach, ultrasonic guidance, catheter tip positioning, prevention and management of associated trauma and infection, and specific training and follow-up. A structured patient history focused on bleeding should be taken prior to insertion of a CVCs. The right internal jugular vein should primarily be chosen for insertion of a wide-bore CVC. Catheter tip positioning in the right atrium or lower third of the superior caval vein should be verified for long-term use. Ultrasonic guidance should be used for catheterisation by the internal jugular or femoral veins and may also be used for insertion via the subclavian veins or the veins of the upper limb. The operator inserting a CVC should wear cap, mask, and sterile gown and gloves. For long-term intravenous access, tunnelled CVC or subcutaneous venous ports are preferred. Intravenous position of the catheter tip should be verified by clinical or radiological methods after insertion and before each use. Simulator-assisted training of CVC insertion should precede bedside training in patients. Units inserting and managing CVC should have quality assertion programmes for implementation and follow-up of routines, teaching, training and clinical outcome. Clinical guidelines on a wide range of relevant topics have been introduced, based on extensive literature retrieval, to facilitate effective and safe management of CVCs
