    Residential Location and Intra City Mobility in an African City: Some Empirical Observations among Migrants in Metropolitan Accra, Ghana

    Although many facets of the migration phenomena in sub-Saharan Africa have been studied extensively, there is a paucity of research on residential mobility behavior of migrants. This exploratory study examines the residential mobility in Accra, Ghana, using a retrospective survey of randomly selected migrant households. To examine the direction of moves, Accra was delineated into three major zones: the inner city, former periphery and recent periphery. The results demonstrate that unlike studies elsewhere, the inner zone of Accra does not serve as the major port of entry for migrants. While the former periphery served as the zone of entry for the majority of the migrants in the past, the recent periphery has become the predominant entry point in recent years, and has also become the zone to which most home owners eventually move. This change in the zone of entry over time has been explained through a ‘push-pull’ framework. Also, there is a significant association between ethnicity and area of initial residence. With the exception of the Akans, there is a marked concentration of ethnic groups in certain sectors of the city. For instance, almost two thirds of the Mole-Dagbanis initially settled in the former periphery. Using a multinomial logit model to estimate the direction of residential movement, it was found that although the majority of movements were intra-sectoral, different trajectories were observed for renters and home owners. The policy implications of the findings and directions for further research are discussed

    Almost invariably, the data available to the social scientist display one or more characteristics of missing information. Even though reasons for non response are varied, most frequently, they reflect the unwillingness of respondents to provide information on undesirable social behaviours and on issues considered as private. Besides these, sloppy research designs often leads to ambiguous and poorly structured survey questions which provide a recipe for low response. Longitudinal surveys also suffer from incompleteness due to attrition resulting from death and emigration, while in retrospective surveys, memory effect might be a major source of non-response. While there is no consensus among methodologists on the single most effective technique of handling missing information, certain pertinent questions need to be addressed: should we completely ignore the missing data and proceed with the analysis? What are the implicit assumptions if one adopts such an approach and how unbiased will our estimates be? This paper reviews a variety of methods of handling missing information

    Parents’ Perspectives on Curbing Gun Violence among Children in Three Counties in Indiana

    The occurrence of fatalities associated with gun violence among children, as reported in the media, makes studying gun violence and its prevention among children a priority. The purpose of this study was to investigate parents’ views on gun violence and whether gun safety education should be provided in schools. Thematic analysis was conducted on open-ended questions and descriptive statistics for closedended questions. Of the 200 participants, 79% (n= 158) of them indicated that gun safety instructions should be taught in schools, whereas 21% (n= 42) disapproved. Forty-five percent of the 158 participants who agreed to gun safety education suggested that police/military personnel teach gun safety to children. Overall, the parents questioned believed that gun safety education would help children to understand the seriousness of this issue. Some parents were not in favor of gun safety education. However, because the overwhelming majority was in favor of it, it is important for stakeholders in schools to consider offering it as one possible way to reduce gun violence among children

    The Implications of Insurance Status on Presentation, Surgical Management and Mortality among Non-Metastatic Breast Cancer Patients in Indiana

    Background The National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program seeks to reduce health care disparities by providing uninsured and underinsured women access to screening mammograms. The objective of this study is to identify the differences in presentation, surgical management, and mortality among nonmetastatic uninsured patients diagnosed through Indiana's Breast and Cervical Cancer Program compared with patients with private and government (Medicare or Medicaid) insurance. Methods Study data were obtained using the Indiana state cancer registry and Indiana's Breast and Cervical Cancer Program. Women aged 50 to 64 with an index diagnosis of stage 0 to III breast cancer from January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2013, were included in the study. Bivariate intergroup analysis was conducted. Kaplan-Meier estimates between insurance types were compared using the log rank test. All-cause mortality was evaluated using a mixed effects model. Results The groups differed significantly for sociodemographic and clinical variables. Uninsured Indiana Breast and Cervical Cancer Program patients presented with later disease stage (P < .001) and had the highest overall mortality (hazard ratio 2.2, P = .003). Surgical management only differed among stage III patients (P = .012). Conclusion To improve insurance-based disparities in Indiana, implementation of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program in conjunction with expansion of insurance coverage to vulnerable low-income populations need to be optimized

Given their clinical utility, much effort has been made toward understanding the dynamics of hematopoietic production from this pool of stem cells. An understanding of hematopoietic stem cell clonal dynamics during blood ontogeny could yield important insights into hematopoietic regulation, especially during aging and repeated exposure to hematopoietic stress-insults that may predispose individuals to the development of hematopoietic disease.     Comparison of adherence measures using claims data in the South African private health sector

    Background. Medication adherence measurement is becoming increasingly important. Biological assays and markers, directly observed therapy, self-reports, pill counts and surveys have been successfully used to assess adherence under various circumstances, but may be limited by cost, ethical concerns and self-reported bias. Administrative claims data, in addition to offering a solution to these limitations, provide access to large study populations under real clinical practice situations, and in a timely and effective manner. With the wide range of adherence measures determined from claims data available – some of which have been found to be mathematically equivalent – researchers are often faced with the decision of choosing which is appropriate. An assessment of the various measures is therefore important for better understanding and to facilitate future adherence studies using administrative data.Objectives. To compare different adherence measures using data from a medicines claims database in South Africa (SA), employing montelukast for the purpose of illustration.Methods. This retrospective, cross-sectional research used data from 1 January 2006 to 31 December 2015 from a privately owned pharmaceutical benefits management (PBM) company in SA. Claims for montelukast were identified and adherence was determined using the continuous multiple-interval measure of oversupply (CMOS), compliance ratio (CR), modified medication possession ratio (MPRm), refill compliance rate (RCR), continuous single-interval measure of medication acquisition (CSA) and proportion of days covered (PDC) capped at 1. The measures were compared with the medication possession ratio (MPR) as the reference.Results. The MPR, CMOS and CR were equivalent, each yielding an adherence value of 86%. The MPRm, RCR and average CSA yielded higher adherence values of 96.9%, 117.2% and 129.0%, respectively, whereas the PDC produced a lower adherence value of 76.0%. The measures that used the entire study period as the denominator produced consistent results compared with the measures that used the difference between claims dates as denominator.Conclusions. The MPR is considered the most widely used metric to measure adherence using administrative data, but it may not always be applicable owing to the type of data available. Adherence computed using the CR, CMOS and PDC capped was found to be comparable to the MPR, and they may therefore be used as alternatives.

    Historical and simulated ecosystem carbon dynamics in Ghana: land use, management, and climate

    International audienceWe used the General Ensemble biogeochemical Modeling System (GEMS) to simulate responses of natural and managed ecosystems to changes in land use, management, and climate for a forest/savanna transitional zone in central Ghana. Model results show that deforestation for crop production during the last century resulted in a substantial reduction in ecosystem carbon (C) stock from 135.4 Mg C ha?1 in 1900 to 77.0 Mg C ha?1 in 2000, and in soil organic C stock within the top 20 cm of soil from 26.6 Mg C ha?1 to 21.2 Mg C ha?1. If no land use change takes place from 2000 through 2100, low and high climate change scenarios (increase in temperature and decrease in precipitation over time) will result in losses of soil organic C stock by 19% and 25%, respectively. A low nitrogen (N) fertilization rate is the principal constraint on current crop production. An increase in N fertilization under the low climate change scenario would increase crop yield by 14% with 30 kg N ha?1 and by 38% with 60 kg N ha?1, leading to an increase in the average soil C stock by 12% and 29%, respectively, in all cropland by 2100. The results suggest that the climate changes in the future from current climate conditions will not necessarily become a determinant control on ecosystem C fluxes and crop production, while a reasonable N fertilization rate is critical to achieve food security and agricultural sustainability in the study area through the 21st century, and current cropping systems could be optimized to make full use of the rainfall resource

    Maize (Zea mays L.) is the most important cereal crop produced in Ghana. However the change in environmental conditions, the expansion of maize to new agro-ecologies coupled with inadequate maize varieties available for the different environments affects yield improvement programmes in Ghana. Hence, the study is to investigate the influence of genotype by environment interaction on the maize hybrids and to identify stable and high yielding hybrids with superior agronomic for famers use in the country. The objectives of the study was to investigate the influence of genotype by environment interaction on the maize hybrids and to identify stable and high yielding hybrids with superior agronomic performance for famers use in Ghana. Thus, fifteen extra-early maize hybrids and three locally released checks were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with three replications in two locations in Ghana. The experiment was carried out at KNUST and Akomadan which represent the forest and forest transition zones of Ghana. Nine of the hybrids out of the fifteen hybrids evaluated produce above the average yield and the effect of genotype, location and genotype by location interaction was significant for grain yield. The GGE biplot used in this study revealed that TZEEI-1 x TZEEI-21, TZEEI-6 x TZEEI-21, TZEEI-15 x TZEEI-1 and TZEEI-29 x TZEEI-21 were high yielding and stable hybrids because they were closer to the ideal. The GGE biplot also identified Akomadan as the most ideal testing environment for these hybrids under irrigation

    Justice in solar energy development.

    To achieve national energy and climate targets across the world, there is a key focus on solar energy development. It is clear from literature that many countries have enormous, under-utilised potentials for solar energy, which can significantly change their energy mix and contribute to the low-carbon ambitions they signed up to under the 2015 Paris Agreement. Our research highlights that there are benefits to solar energy development from a law and economic perspective that are still underexplored. These benefits centre on justice and on how solar energy increases justice within the energy system. From a legal perspective, we review 72 countries and their introduction of energy law with respect to solar energy development. Our analysis illustrates that in some developing countries (new) legislation was not associated with a significant increase in the share of solar energy in the energy mix. We then highlight how to achieve solar energy development through law that can provide certainty for investment. Furthermore, we stress the importance of flexibility that allows the full potential of solar energy to be realised within the energy system. The corresponding form of flexibility justice, combining law and economics, can contribute to increased economic welfare based on market reforms that centre on new market design and market access, while ensuring that it keeps pace with ongoing developments in technology, cost, and ownership
