    Supersymmetric Backgrounds and Black Holes in N=(1,1){\cal N}=(1,1) Cosmological New Massive Supergravity

    Using an off-shell Killing spinor analysis we perform a systematic investigation of the supersymmetric background and black hole solutions of the N=(1,1){\cal N}=(1,1) Cosmological New Massive Gravity model. The solutions with a null Killing vector are the same pp-wave solutions that one finds in the N=1{\cal N}=1 model but we find new solutions with a time-like Killing vector that are absent in the N=1{\cal N}=1 case. An example of such a solution is a Lifshitz spacetime. We also consider the supersymmetry properties of the so-called rotating hairy BTZ black holes and logarithmic black holes in an AdS3AdS_3 background. Furthermore, we show that under certain assumptions there is no supersymmetric Lifshitz black hole solution.Comment: 27 pages, v2: Typos Corrected, Version appeared in JHE

    The Conflict Resolution and Counterterrorism Dilemma: Turkey Faces its Kurdish Question

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.This article considers the relationship between two processes-conflict resolution and counterterrorism-which conceptually share many common points, yet in practice do not necessarily proceed together easily towards a common goal. Considering particular cases of ethnic conflict in which terrorist factions exist, the article argues that while neither conflict resolution nor counterterrorism alone can adequately address the problem, simultaneously conducting both must keep in mind the processes' inherent differences and avoid excessive prioritizing of one over the other. By exploring recent Turkish governmental initiatives to address the Kurdish question, the article attempts to provide an outline for how to successfully cope with the two processes simultaneously. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC

    The effects of seed coating treatment on yield and yield components in some cotton (Gossypium hirsitum L.) varieties

    The use of delinted cotton seeds in cotton planting instead of fuzzy cotton seeds has spread recently. Cotton planting area of the world was 32,150,000 ha in 2003 - 2004. Approximately 45 - 50% of the planting seed in the world is delinted. This signifies that nearly 16,000,000 ha cotton area is planted by delinted cotton seed. In this study, coating fuzzy cotton seeds is proposed as an alternative to delintation. Coating makes fuzzy cotton seeds more suitable for the pneumatic spacing planter. Also, unlike delintation, sulphuric acid is not used for coating and this eliminates the problems associated with its usage such as seed loss, pollution and threats to human health. The results show that the cultivation of coated cotton seeds has no disadvantage regarding the agronomic and technological characteristics of cotton seed; coating may even improve the characteristics of the seeds. Also, no significant difference exists in terms of yield. Hence, seed coating has the potential to expand organic cultivation of cotton, as the coated seeds can be easily planted with pneumatic spacing drills and as organic seed procurement would be provided with the seed coating method.Keywords: Fuzzy cotton seed, seed coating, yield componentsAfrican Journal of BiotechnologyVol. 9(34), pp. 5523-5529, 23 August, 201

    A novel and robust parameter training approach for HMMs under noisy and partial access to states

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.This paper proposes a new estimation algorithm for the parameters of an HMM as to best account for the observed data. In this model, in addition to the observation sequence, we have partial and noisy access to the hidden state sequence as side information. This access can be seen as "partial labeling" of the hidden states. Furthermore, we model possible mislabeling in the side information in a joint framework and derive the corresponding EM updates accordingly. In our simulations, we observe that using this side information, we considerably improve the state recognition performance, up to 70%, with respect to the "achievable margin" defined by the baseline algorithms. Moreover, our algorithm is shown to be robust to the training conditions. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

    Nanomaterials-based enzyme electrochemical biosensors operating through inhibition for biosensing applications

    In recent years great progress has been made in applying nanomaterials to design novel biosensors. Use of nanomaterials offers to biosensing platforms exceptional optical, electronic and magnetic properties. Nanomaterials can increase the surface of the transducing area of the sensors that in turn bring an increase in catalytic behaviors. They have large surface-to-volume ratio, controlled morphology and structure that also favor miniaturization, an interesting advantage when the sample volume is a critical issue. Biosensors have great potential for achieving detect-to-protect devices: devices that can be used in detections of pollutants and other treating compounds/analytes (drugs) protecting citizens' life. After a long term focused scientific and financial efforts/supports biosensors are expected now to fulfill their promise such as being able to perform sampling and analysis of complex samples with interest for clinical or environment fields. Among all types of biosensors, enzymatic biosensors, the most explored biosensing devices, have an interesting property, the inherent inhibition phenomena given the enzyme-substrate complex formation. The exploration of such phenomena is making remarkably important their application as research and applied tools in diagnostics. Different inhibition biosensor systems based on nanomaterials modification has been proposed and applied. The role of nanomaterials in inhibition-based biosensors for the analyses of different groups of drugs as well as contaminants such as pesticides, phenolic compounds and others, are discussed in this review. This deep analysis of inhibition-based biosensors that employ nanomaterials will serve researchers as a guideline for further improvements and approaching of these devices to real sample applications so as to reach society needs and such biosensor market demands
