Human Time-Frequency Acuity Beats the Fourier Uncertainty Principle
The time-frequency uncertainty principle states that the product of the
temporal and frequency extents of a signal cannot be smaller than .
We study human ability to simultaneously judge the frequency and the timing of
a sound. Our subjects often exceeded the uncertainty limit, sometimes by more
than tenfold, mostly through remarkable timing acuity. Our results establish a
lower bound for the nonlinearity and complexity of the algorithms employed by
our brains in parsing transient sounds, rule out simple "linear filter" models
of early auditory processing, and highlight timing acuity as a central feature

Universal conductance fluctuations in three dimensional metallic single crystals of Si
In this paper we report the measurement of conductance fluctuations in single
crystals of Si made metallic by heavy doping (n \approx 2-2.5n_c, n_c being
critical composition at Metal-Insulator transition). Since all dimensions (L)
of the samples are much larger than the electron phase coherent length L_\phi
(L/L_\phi \sim 10^3), our system is truly three dimensional. Temperature and
magnetic field dependence of noise strongly indicate the universal conductance
fluctuations (UCF) as predominant source of the observed magnitude of noise.
Conductance fluctuations within a single phase coherent region of L_\phi^3 was
found to be saturated at \approx (e^2/h)^2. An accurate
knowledge of the level of disorder, enables us to calculate the change in
conductance \delta G_1 due to movement of a single scatterer as \delta G_1 \sim
e^2/h, which is \sim 2 orders of magnitude higher than its theoretically

Measurement of Time-of-Arrival in Quantum Mechanics
It is argued that the time-of-arrival cannot be precisely defined and
measured in quantum mechanics. By constructing explicit toy models of a
measurement, we show that for a free particle it cannot be measured more
accurately then , where is the initial kinetic
energy of the particle. With a better accuracy, particles reflect off the
measuring device, and the resulting probability distribution becomes distorted.
It is shown that a time-of-arrival operator cannot exist, and that approximate
time-of-arrival operators do not correspond to the measurements considered

Time series aggregation, disaggregation and long memory
We study the aggregation/disaggregation problem of random parameter AR(1)
processes and its relation to the long memory phenomenon. We give a
characterization of a subclass of aggregated processes which can be obtained
from simpler, "elementary", cases. In particular cases of the mixture
densities, the structure (moving average representation) of the aggregated
process is investigated
The Importance of Audit Firm Characteristics and the Drivers of Auditor Change in UK Listed Companies
This paper explores the importance of audit firm characteristics and the factors motivating auditor change based on questionnaire responses from 210 listed UK companies (a response rate of 70%). Twenty-nine potentially desirable auditor characteristics are identified from the extant literature and their importance elicited. Exploratory factor analysis reduces these variables to eight uncorrelated underlying dimensions: reputation/quality; acceptability to third parties; value for money; ability to provide non-audit services; small audit firm; specialist industry knowledge; non-Big Six large audit firm; and geographical proximity. Insights into the nature of 'the Big Six factor' emerge. Two thirds of companies had recently considered changing auditors; the main reasons cited being audit fee level, dissatisfaction with audit quality and changes in top management. Of those companies that considered change, 73% did not actually do so, the main reasons cited being fee reduction by the incumbent and avoidance of disruption. Thus audit fee levels are both a key precipitator of change and a key factor in retaining the status quo
Accessing elite nurses for research: reflections on the theoretical and practical issues of telephone interviewing
Elite groups are interesting as they frequently are powerful (in terms of position, knowledge and influence) and enjoy considerable authority. It is important, therefore, to involve them in research concerned with understanding social contexts and processes. This is particularly pertinent in healthcare, where considerable strategic development and change are features of everyday practice that may be guided or perceived as being guided, by elites.
This paper evolved from a study investigating the availability and role of nurses whose remit involved leading nursing research and development within acute NHS Trusts in two health regions in Southern England. The study design included telephone interviews with Directors of Nursing Services during which time the researchers engaged in a reflective analysis of their experiences of conducting research with an `elite' group. Important issues identified were the role of gatekeepers, engagement with elites and the use of the telephone interview method in this context. The paper examines these issues and makes a case for involving executive nurses in further research. The paper also offers strategies to help researchers design and implement telephone interview studies successfully to maximise access to the views and experiences of `hard to reach groups', such as elites, while minimising the associated disruption
How uncertainty enables non-classical dynamics
The uncertainty principle limits quantum states such that when one observable
takes predictable values there must be some other mutually unbiased observables
which take uniformly random values. We show that this restrictive condition
plays a positive role as the enabler of non-classical dynamics in an
interferometer. First we note that instantaneous action at a distance between
different paths of an interferometer should not be possible. We show that for
general probabilistic theories this heavily curtails the non-classical
dynamics. We prove that there is a trade-off with the uncertainty principle,
that allows theories to evade this restriction. On one extreme, non-classical
theories with maximal certainty have their non-classical dynamics absolutely
restricted to only the identity operation. On the other extreme, quantum theory

Reasons for and consequences of missed appointments in general practice in the UK: questionnaire survey and prospective review of medical records
Background
Missed appointments are a common occurrence in primary care in the UK, yet little is known about the reasons for them, or the consequences of missing an appointment. This paper aims to determine the reasons for missed appointments and whether patients who miss an appointment subsequently consult their general practitioner (GP). Secondary aims are to compare psychological morbidity, and the previous appointments with GPs between subjects and a comparison group.
Methods
Postal questionnaire survey and prospective medical notes review of adult patients missing an appointment and the comparison group who attended appointments over a three week period in seven general practices in West Yorkshire.
Results
Of the 386 who missed appointments 122 (32%) responded. Of the 386 in the comparison group 223 (58%) responded, resulting in 23 case-control matched pairs with complete data collection. Over 40% of individuals who missed an appointment and participated said that they forgot the appointment and a quarter said that they tried very hard to cancel the appointment or that it was at an inconvenient time. A fifth reported family commitments or being too ill to attend. Over 90% of the patients who missed an appointment subsequently consulted within three months and of these nearly 60% consulted for the stated problem that was going to be presented in the missed consultation. The odds of missing an appointment decreased with increasing age and were greater among those who had missed at least one appointment in the previous 12 months. However, estimates for comparisons between those who missed appointments and the comparison group were imprecise due to the low response rate.
Conclusion
Patients who miss appointments tend to cite practice factors and their own forgetfulness as the main reasons for doing so, and most attend within three months of a missed appointment. This study highlights a number of implications for future research. More work needs to be done to engage people who miss appointments into research in a meaningful way
