    GAWPS: A MRST-based module for wellbore profiling and graphical analysis of flow units

    Several graphical methods have been developed to understand the stratigraphy observed in wells and assist experts in estimating rock quality, defining limits for barriers, baffles, and speed zones, and in particular, delineating hydraulic flow units. At present, there exists no computational tool that bundles the main graphical methods used for defining flow units. This paper introduces an add-on module to the MATLAB Reservoir Simulation Toolbox that contains computational routines to carry out such graphical analyses, both qualitatively and quantitatively. We also describe a new secondary method defined as the derivative of the stratigraphic modified Lorenz plot, which we use to classify depth ranges within the reservoir into barriers, strong baffles, weak baffles, and normal units, based on flow unit speed over those depths. We demonstrate the capabilities of the “Graphical Analysis for Well Placement Strategy” module by applying it to several case studies of both real and synthetic reservoirs.Cited as: Oliveira, G.     Naturally occurring ingredients as potential antiaging cosmetics

    The criteria adopted for establishing whether a determined substance has potential as a cosmetic constituent are based on the present legislation of each country. In this study, natural antiaging constituents as Fomes officinalis, rice protein and glutamic acid were pharmacologically evaluated using neuromuscular preparation. These constituents induced a neuromuscular blockade, individually and also in mixture, simulating a Botox®, but not, dimethylaminoethanol-effect. The pharmacological knowledge is beneficial since the real effect of each ingredient becomes apparent, increasing the consumer's confidence on the antiaging cosmetic.Colegio de Farmacéuticos de la Provincia de Buenos Aire

    Geometry Optimization for Miniaturized Thermoelectric Generators

    Thermoelectric materials capable of converting heat into electrical energy are used in sustainable electric generators, whose efficiency has been normally increased with incorporation of new materials with high figure of merit (ZT) values. Because the performance of these thermoelectric generators (TEGs) also depends on device geometry, in this study we employ the finite element method to determine optimized geometries for highly efficient miniaturized TEGs. We investigated devices with similar fill factors but with different thermoelectric leg geometries (filled and hollow). Our results show that devices with legs of hollow geometry are more efficient than those with filled geometry for the same length and cross-sectional area of thermoelectric legs. This behavior was observed for thermoelectric leg lengths smaller than 0.1 mm, where the leg shape causes a significant difference in temperature distribution along the device. It was found that for reaching highly efficient miniaturized TEGs, one has to consider the leg geometry in addition to the thermal conductivity

    Ischemic Preconditioning Improves the Bench-Press Maximal Strength in Resistance-Trained Men

We investigated whether acute ischemic preconditioning (IPC) would affect upper limb maximal strength performance in resistance-trained men. Using a counterbalanced randomized crossover design, fifteen men (29.9 ± 5.9 yrs.; 86.3 ± 9.6 kg; 8.0 ± 5.0 yrs. resistance training experience) performed one-repetition maximum (1-RM) bench press tests on three different occasions: control, 10 min post-IPC or 10 min post-placebo (SHAM). One-way analysis of variance showed that the post-IPC condition increased (P \u3c 0.0001) 1-RM loads compared to both control and post-SHAM (control 113.3 ± 15.9 kg vs. SHAM 113.9 ± 15.8 kg vs. IPC 115.7 ± 15.6 kg), while control and SHAM did not differ (P \u3e 0.05). Individual results showed that 13 participants (~87%) improved their performance post-IPC compared to control, and 11 participants (~73%) performed better post-IPC compared to post-SHAM. Reported session rating of perceived exertion (RPE) was lower (P \u3c 0.0001) post-IPC (8.5 ± 0.6 arb.u) compared to control (9.3 ± 0.5 arb.u) and post-SHAM (9.3 ± 0.5 arb.u). Therefore, we conclude that IPC acutely improves upper limb maximal strength performance and reduces session-RPE in resistance-trained men. These results suggest an acute ergogenic effect of IPC for strength and power sports such as powerlifting

    Lack of microsatellite instability in gastrointestinal stromal tumors

    The microsatellite instability (MSI) phenotype may constitute an important biomarker for patient response to immunotherapy, particularly to anti-programmed death-1 inhibitors. MSI is a type of genomic instability caused by a defect in DNA mismatch repair (MMR) proteins, which is present mainly in colorectal cancer and its hereditary form, hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer. Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) development is associated with activating mutations of KIT proto-oncogene receptor tyrosine kinase (KIT) or platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha (PDGFRA), which are oncogenes that predict the response to imatinib mesylate. In addition to KIT/PDGFRA mutations, other molecular alterations are important in GIST development. In GISTs, the characterization of the MSI phenotype is scarce and the results are not consensual. The present study aimed to assess MSI in a series of 79 GISTs. The evaluation of MSI was performed by pentaplex polymerase chain reaction comprising five markers, followed by capillary electrophoresis. The expression of MMR proteins was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Regarding the KIT/PDGFRA/B-Raf proto-oncogene, serine/threonine kinase molecular profile of the 79 GISTs, 83.6% of the tumors possessed KIT mutations, 10.1% had PDGFRA mutations and 6.3% were triple wild-type. The mutated-PDGFRA cases were associated with gastric location and a lower mitotic index compared with KIT-mutated and wild-types, and these patients were more likely to be alive and without cancer. MSI analysis identified 4 cases with instability in one marker, however, additional evaluation of normal tissue and immunohistochemical staining of MMR proteins confirmed their microsatellite-stable nature.     Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) detection and typing by PCR: a contribution to diagnostic screening of EBV-positive Burkitt's lymphoma

    BACKGROUND: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is associated to the etio-pathogenesis of an increasing number of tumors. Detection of EBV in pathology samples is relevant since its high prevalence in some cancers makes the virus a promising target of specific therapies. RNA in situ hybridization (RISH) is the standard diagnostic procedure, while polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based methods are used for strain (EBV type-1 or 2) distinction. We performed a systematic comparison between RISH and PCR for EBV detection, in a group of childhood B-cell Non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL), aiming to validate PCR as a first, rapid method for the diagnosis of EBV-associated B-cell NHL. METHODS: EBV infection was investigated in formalin fixed paraffin-embedded tumor samples of 41 children with B-cell NHL, including 35 Burkitt's lymphoma (BL), from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, by in situ hybridization of EBV-encoded small RNA (EBER-RISH) and PCR assays based on EBNA2 amplification. RESULTS: EBV genomes were detected in 68% of all NHL. Type 1 and 2 accounted for 80% and 20% of EBV infection, respectively. PCR and RISH were highly concordant (95%), as well as single- and nested-PCR results, allowing the use of a single PCR round for diagnostic purposes. PCR assays showed a sensitivity and specificity of 96% and 100%, respectively, with a detection level of 1 EBV genome in 5,000–10,000 EBV-negative cells, excluding the possibility of detecting low-number EBV-bearing memory cells. CONCLUSION: We describe adequate PCR conditions with similar sensitivity and reliability to RISH, to be used for EBV diagnostic screening in high grade B-NHL, in "at risk" geographic regions
