    Efficiences Des Nutriments P Et K En Riziculture IrriguĂ©e Dans Un Bas-Fond Secondaire En Zone De Savane GuinĂ©enne De La CĂŽte d’Ivoire

    N-nitrogen is the most limiting element in rice-growing on lowland soils in the central part of CĂŽte d'Ivoire. In addition to its direct effect, poor management of P and K fertilizers in basic manure can induce low yields and losses of currencies. However, inappropriate use of these nutrients (P and K) in these shallows can induce other adverse effects on crops and even on the environment. So, for the eficient management of lowland ricegrowing fertiliszation, three agronomic trials have been set up in the Central part of CĂŽte d'Ivoire to determine the optimum P and K doses to improve fertilizer efficiency in the relevant agroecology. Three rates of PCa(H2PO4)2H2O [30, 60 and 90 kgPha-1 ] as well as three of K-KCl [25, 50 and 75kgKha-1 ] and their recommended rates (13kgPha-1 and 25kgKha-1 ) in the humid forest zone were the treatments. A total of 80kgNha-1 (urea) was applied in three splits to each of the micro-plots except in the control including no fertilizer. The rice variety named NERICA L19 was transplanted.An agronomic trial including eleven (11) treatments in three replications was laid out in a complete randomized blocks design The highest K recovery rate is obtained with the 25kgKha -1 rates, while the lowest rate is with 50kgKha-1 in the three trials. There is a gradual decrease in P-level recovery as rates increase, regardless of the test. Increased rates of P and K induce a decrease in agronomic efficiency. The partial productivity factor (PFP) of nutrients P and K decreases with increasing rates for all three trials. The highest grains and straw yields are obtained for 75kgKha-1 doses regardless of the dose of P.     X-Ray and Near-Infrared Observations of GX 339-4 in the Low/Hard State with Suzaku and IRSF

    X-ray and near-infrared (JJ-HH-KsK_{\rm s}) observations of the Galactic black hole binary GX 339--4 in the low/hard state were performed with Suzaku and IRSF in 2009 March. The spectrum in the 0.5--300 keV band is dominated by thermal Comptonization of multicolor disk photons, with a small contribution from a direct disk component, indicating that the inner disk is almost fully covered by hot corona with an electron temperature of ≈\approx175 keV. The Comptonizing corona has at least two optical depths, τ≈1,0.4\tau \approx 1,0.4. Analysis of the iron-K line profile yields an inner disk radius of (13.3−6.0+6.4)Rg(13.3^{+6.4}_{-6.0}) R_{\rm g} (RgR_{\rm g} represents the gravitational radius GM/c2GM/c^2), with the best-fit inclination angle of ≈50∘\approx50^\circ. This radius is consistent with that estimated from the continuum fit by assuming the conservation of photon numbers in Comptonization. Our results suggest that the standard disk of GX 339--4 is likely truncated before reaching the innermost stable circular orbit (for a non rotating black hole) in the low/hard state at ∌\sim1% of the Eddington luminosity. The one-day averaged near-infrared light curves are found to be correlated with hard X-ray flux with FKs∝FX0.45F_{\rm Ks} \propto F_{\rm X}^{0.45}. The flatter near infrared ÎœFÎœ\nu F_{\nu} spectrum than the radio one suggests that the optically thin synchrotron radiation from the compact jets dominates the near-infrared flux. Based on a simple analysis, we estimate the magnetic field and size of the jet base to be 5×1045\times10^4 G and 6×1086\times 10^8 cm, respectively.     Embracing the Market: Entry into Self-Employment in Transitional China, 1978-1996

    This paper introduces labor market transition as an intervening process by which the macro institutional transition to a market economy alters social stratification outcome. Rather than directly addressing income distribution, it examines the pattern of workers’ entry into self-employment in reform-era China (1978-1996), focusing on rural-urban differences and the temporal trend. Analyses of data from a national representative survey in China show that education, party membership and cadre status all deter urban workers’ entry into self-employment, while education promotes rural workers’ entry into self-employment. As marketization proceeds, the rate of entry into self-employment increases in both rural and urban China, but urban workers are increasingly more likely to take advantages of the new market opportunities. In urban China, college graduates and cadres are still less likely to be involved in self-employment, but they are becoming more likely to do so in the later phase of reform.     Genome Analysis of Planctomycetes Inhabiting Blades of the Red Alga

    Porphyra is a macrophytic red alga of the Bangiales that is important ecologically and economically. We describe the genomes of three bacteria in the phylum Planctomycetes (designated P1, P2 and P3) that were isolated from blades of Porphyra umbilicalis (P.um.1). These three Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) belong to distinct genera; P2 belongs to the genus Rhodopirellula, while P1 and P3 represent undescribed genera within the Planctomycetes. Comparative analyses of the P1, P2 and P3 genomes show large expansions of distinct gene families, which can be widespread throughout the Planctomycetes (e.g., protein kinases, sensors/response regulators) and may relate to specific habitat (e.g., sulfatase gene expansions in marine Planctomycetes) or phylogenetic position. Notably, there are major differences among the Planctomycetes in the numbers and sub-functional diversity of enzymes (e.g., sulfatases, glycoside hydrolases, polysaccharide lyases) that allow these bacteria to access a range of sulfated polysaccharides in macroalgal cell walls. These differences suggest that the microbes have varied capacities for feeding on fixed carbon in the cell walls of P.um.1 and other macrophytic algae, although the activities among the various bacteria might be functionally complementary in situ. Additionally, phylogenetic analyses indicate augmentation of gene functions through expansions arising from gene duplications and horizontal gene transfers; examples include genes involved in cell wall degradation (e.g., ÎÂș-carrageenase, alginate lyase, fucosidase) and stress responses (e.g., efflux pump, amino acid transporter). Finally P1 and P2 contain various genes encoding selenoproteins, many of which are enzymes that ameliorate the impact of environmental stresses that occur in the intertidal habitat

    Cognitive Dysfunction Is Sustained after Rescue Therapy in Experimental Cerebral Malaria, and Is Reduced by Additive Antioxidant Therapy

    Neurological impairments are frequently detected in children surviving cerebral malaria (CM), the most severe neurological complication of infection with Plasmodium falciparum. The pathophysiology and therapy of long lasting cognitive deficits in malaria patients after treatment of the parasitic disease is a critical area of investigation. In the present study we used several models of experimental malaria with differential features to investigate persistent cognitive damage after rescue treatment. Infection of C57BL/6 and Swiss (SW) mice with Plasmodium berghei ANKA (PbA) or a lethal strain of Plasmodium yoelii XL (PyXL), respectively, resulted in documented CM and sustained persistent cognitive damage detected by a battery of behavioral tests after cure of the acute parasitic disease with chloroquine therapy. Strikingly, cognitive impairment was still present 30 days after the initial infection. In contrast, BALB/c mice infected with PbA, C57BL6 infected with Plasmodium chabaudi chabaudi and SW infected with non lethal Plasmodium yoelii NXL (PyNXL) did not develop signs of CM, were cured of the acute parasitic infection by chloroquine, and showed no persistent cognitive impairment. Reactive oxygen species have been reported to mediate neurological injury in CM. Increased production of malondialdehyde (MDA) and conjugated dienes was detected in the brains of PbA-infected C57BL/6 mice with CM, indicating high oxidative stress. Treatment of PbA-infected C57BL/6 mice with additive antioxidants together with chloroquine at the first signs of CM prevented the development of persistent cognitive damage. These studies provide new insights into the natural history of cognitive dysfunction after rescue therapy for CM that may have clinical relevance, and may also be relevant to cerebral sequelae of sepsis and other disorders
