The radio lighthouse CU Virginis: the spindown of a single main sequence star

    Get PDF
The fast rotating star CU Virginis is a magnetic chemically peculiar star with an oblique dipolar magnetic field. The continuum radio emission has been interpreted as gyrosyncrotron emission arising from a thin magnetospheric layer. Previous radio observations at 1.4 GHz showed that a 100% circular polarized and highly directive emission component overlaps to the continuum emission two times per rotation, when the magnetic axis lies in the plane of the sky. This sort of radio lighthouse has been proposed to be due to cyclotron maser emission generated above the magnetic pole and propagating perpendicularly to the magnetic axis. Observations carried out with the Australia Telescope Compact Array at 1.4 and 2.5 GHz one year after this discovery show that this radio emission is still present, meaning that the phenomenon responsible for this process is steady on a timescale of years. The emitted radiation spans at least 1 GHz, being observed from 1.4 to 2.5 GHz. On the light of recent results on the physics of the magnetosphere of this star, the possibility of plasma radiation is ruled out. The characteristics of this radio lighthouse provides us a good marker of the rotation period, since the peaks are visible at particular rotational phases. After one year, they show a delay of about 15 minutes. This is interpreted as a new abrupt spinning down of the star. Among several possibilities, a quick emptying of the equatorial magnetic belt after reaching the maximum density can account for the magnitude of the breaking. The study of the coherent emission in stars like CU Vir, as well as in pre main sequence stars, can give important insight into the angular momentum evolution in young stars. This is a promising field of investigation that high sensitivity radio interferometers such as SKA can exploit.Comment: Accepted to MNRAS, 8 pages, 7 figures, updated versio

Binary coalescence from case A evolution -- mergers and blue stragglers

We constructed some main-sequence mergers from case A binary evolution and studied their characteristics via Eggleton's stellar evolution code. Both total mass and orbital angular momentum are conservative in our binary evolutions. Some mergers might be on the left of the ZAMS as defined by normal surface composition on a CMD because of enhanced surface helium content. The study also shows that central hydrogen content of the mergers is independent of mass. As a consequence, we fit the formula of magnitude and B-V of the mergers when they return back to thermal equilibrium with maximum error 0.29 and 0.037, respectively. Employing the consequences above, we performed Monte Carlo simulations to examine our models in NGC 2682 and NGC 2660. In NGC 2682, binary mergers from our models cover the region with high luminosity, but its importance is much less than that of AML. Our results are well-matched to the observations of NGC2660 if there is about 0.5Mo of mass loss in the merger process.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures. accepted by MNRA

Rastrojo de maíz: producción teórica de etanol lignocelulósico en relación a la fecha de siembra

    Get PDF

In this study, we present photometric and spectroscopic variations of the extremely small mass ratio (q0.1q\simeq 0.1) late-type contact binary system \astrobj{V1191 Cyg}. The parameters for the hot and cooler companions have been determined as MhM_\textrm{h} = 0.13 (1) MM_{\odot}, McM_\textrm{c} = 1.29 (8) MM_{\odot}, RhR_\textrm{h} = 0.52 (15) RR_{\odot}, RcR_\textrm{c} = 1.31 (18) RR_{\odot}, LhL_\textrm{h} = 0.46 (25) LL_{\odot}, LcL_\textrm{c} = 2.71 (80) LL_{\odot}, the separation of the components is aa= 2.20(8) RR_{\odot} and the distance of the system is estimated as 278(31) pc. Analyses of the times of minima indicates a period increase of dPdt=1.3(1)×106\frac{dP}{dt}=1.3(1)\times 10^{-6} days/yr that reveals a very high mass transfer rate of dMdt=2.0(4)×107\frac{dM}{dt}=2.0(4)\times 10^{-7}MM_{\odot}/yr from the less massive component to the more massive one. New observations show that the depths of the minima of the light curve have been interchanged.Comment: Accepted for publication in New Astronomy, 16 pages, 2 figures, 4 table

Stellar model atmospheres with magnetic line blanketing

Model atmospheres of A and B stars are computed taking into account magnetic line blanketing. These calculations are based on the new stellar model atmosphere code LLModels which implements direct treatment of the opacities due to the bound-bound transitions and ensures an accurate and detailed description of the line absorption. The anomalous Zeeman effect was calculated for the field strengths between 1 and 40 kG and a field vector perpendicular to the line of sight. The model structure, high-resolution energy distribution, photometric colors, metallic line spectra and the hydrogen Balmer line profiles are computed for magnetic stars with different metallicities and are discussed with respect to those of non-magnetic reference models. The magnetically enhanced line blanketing changes the atmospheric structure and leads to a redistribution of energy in the stellar spectrum. The most noticeable feature in the optical region is the appearance of the 5200 A depression. However, this effect is prominent only in cool A stars and disappears for higher effective temperatures. The presence of a magnetic field produces opposite variation of the flux distribution in the optical and UV region. A deficiency of the UV flux is found for the whole range of considered effective temperatures, whereas the ``null wavelength'' where flux remains unchanged shifts towards the shorter wavelengths for higher temperatures.Comment: accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysic

Reduced magnetic braking and the magnetic capture model for the formation of ultra-compact binaries

A binary in which a slightly evolved star starts mass transfer to a neutron star can evolve towards ultra-short orbital periods under the influence of magnetic braking. This is called magnetic capture. In a previous paper we showed that ultra-short periods are only reached for an extremely small range of initial binary parameters, in particular orbital period and donor mass. Our conclusion was based on one specific choice for the law of magnetic braking, and for the loss of mass and angular momentum during mass transfer. In this paper we show that for less efficient magnetic braking it is impossible to evolve to ultra-short periods, independent of the amount of mass and associated angular momentum lost from the binary.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics. Mergers of close primordial binaries

We study the production of main sequence mergers of tidally-synchronized primordial short-period binaries. The principal ingredients of our calculation are the angular momentum loss rates inferred from the spindown of open cluster stars and the distribution of binary properties in young open clusters. We compare our results with the expected number of systems that experience mass transfer in post-main sequence phases of evolution and compute the uncertainties in the theoretical predictions. We estimate that main-sequence mergers can account for the observed number of single blue stragglers in M67. Applied to the blue straggler population, this implies that such mergers are responsible for about one quarter of the population of halo blue metal poor stars, and at least one third of the blue stragglers in open clusters for systems older than 1 Gyr. The observed trends as a function of age are consistent with a saturated angular momentum loss rate for rapidly rotating tidally synchronized systems. The predicted number of blue stragglers from main sequence mergers alone is comparable to the number observed in globular clusters, indicating that the net effect of dynamical interactions in dense stellar environments is to reduce rather than increase the blue straggler population. A population of subturnoff mergers of order 3-4% of the upper main sequence population is also predicted for stars older than 4 Gyr, which is roughly comparable to the small population of highly Li-depleted halo dwarfs. Other observational tests are discussed.Comment: number of pages depends on font, margins, columns etc (58 with given format), 14 figures, submitted to the Astrophysical Journa

Dynamical evolution of active detached binaries on log Jo - log M diagram and contact binary formation

    Get PDF
Orbital angular momentum (Jo), systemic mass (M) and orbital period (P) distributions of chromospherically active binaries (CAB) and W Ursae Majoris (W UMa) systems were investigated. The diagrams of log Jo - log P, log M - log P and log Jo-log M were formed from 119 CAB and 102 W UMa stars. The log Jo-log M diagram is found to be most meaningful in demonstrating dynamical evolution of binary star orbits. A slightly curved borderline (contact border) separating the detached and the contact systems was discovered on the log Jo - log M diagram. Since orbital size (a) and period (P) of binaries are determined by their current Jo, M and mass ratio q, the rates of orbital angular momentum loss (dlog Jo/dt) and mass loss (dlog M/dt) are primary parameters to determine the direction and the speed of the dynamical evolution. A detached system becomes a contact system if its own dynamical evolution enables it to pass the contact border on the log Jo - log M diagram. Evolution of q for a mass loosing detached system is unknown unless mass loss rate for each component is known. Assuming q is constant in the first approximation and using the mean decreasing rates of Jo and M from the kinematical ages of CAB stars, it has been predicted that 11, 23 and 39 cent of current CAB stars would transform to W UMa systems if their nuclear evolution permits them to live 2, 4 and 6 Gyrs respectively.Comment: 28 pages, including 6 figures and 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRA

The Lorentz force in atmospheres of CP stars: θ\theta Aurigae

Several dynamical processes may induce considerable electric currents in the atmospheres of magnetic chemically peculiar (CP) stars. The Lorentz force, which results from the interaction between the magnetic field and the induced currents, modifies the atmospheric structure and induces characteristic rotational variability of the hydrogen Balmer lines. To study this phenomena we have initiated a systematic spectroscopic survey of the Balmer lines variation in magnetic CP stars. In this paper we continue presentation of results of the program focusing on the high-resolution spectral observations of A0p star \aur (HD 40312). We have detected a significant variability of the Hα\alpha, Hβ\beta, and Hγ\gamma spectral lines during full rotation cycle of the star. This variability is interpreted in the framework of the model atmosphere analysis, which accounts for the Lorentz force effects. Both the inward and outward directed Lorentz forces are considered under the assumption of the axisymmetric dipole or dipole+quadrupole magnetic field configurations. We demonstrate that only the model with the outward directed Lorentz force in the dipole+quadrupole configuration is able to reproduce the observed hydrogen line variation. These results present new strong evidences for the presence of non-zero global electric currents in the atmosphere of an early-type magnetic star.Comment: 10 figure

Pion-Lambda-Sigma Coupling Extracted from Hyperonic Atoms

The latest measurements of the atomic level width in Sigma-hyperonic Pb atom offer the most accurate datum in the region of low-energy Sigma-hyperon physics. Atomic widths are due to the conversion of Sigma-nucleon into Lambda-nucleon. In high angular momentum states this conversion is dominated by the one-pion exchange. A joint analysis of the data of the scattering of negative-Sigma on proton converting into a Lambda and a neutron and of the atomic widths allows to extract a pseudovector pion-hyperon-Sigma coupling constant of 0.048 with a statistical error of +-0.005 and a systematic one of +-0.004. This corresponds to a pseudoscalar coupling constant of 13.3 with a statistical uncertainty of 1.4 and a systematic one of 1.1.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure, Use of Revtex.st
