Shape maps for second order partial differential equations
We analyse the singularity formation of congruences of solutions of systems
of second order PDEs via the construction of \emph{shape maps}. The trace of
such maps represents a congruence volume whose collapse we study through an
appropriate evolution equation, akin to Raychaudhuri's equation. We develop the
necessary geometric framework on a suitable jet space in which the shape maps
appear naturally associated with certain linear connections. Explicit
computations are given, along with a nontrivial example
TRADE AND THE ENVIRONMENT. LINKING A PARTIAL EQUILIBRIUM TRADE MODEL WITH PRODUCTION SYSTEMS AND THEIR ENVIRONMENTAL CONSEQUENCES
This paper was presented at the INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN LIVESTOCK PRODUCTS SYMPOSIUM in Auckland, New Zealand, January 18-19, 2001. The Symposium was sponsored by: the International Agricultural Trade Research Consortium, the Venture Trust, Massey University, New Zealand, and the Centre for Applied Economics and Policy Studies, Massey University. Dietary changes, especially in developing countries, are driving a massive increase in demand for livestock products. The objective of this symposium was to examine the consequences of this phenomenon, which some have even called a "revolution." How are dietary patterns changing, and can increased demands for livestock products be satisfied from domestic resources? If so, at what cost? What will be the flow-on impacts, for example, in terms of increased demands for feedgrains and the pressures for change within marketing systems? A supply-side response has been the continued development of large-scale, urban-based industrial livestock production systems that in many cases give rise to environmental concerns. If additional imports seem required, where will they originate and what about food security in the importing regions? How might market access conditions be re-negotiated to make increased imports achievable? Other important issues discussed involved food safety, animal health and welfare and the adoption of biotechnology, and their interactions with the negotiation of reforms to domestic and trade policies. Hybrid receiver study
The results are presented of a 4 month study to design a hybrid analog/digital receiver for outer planet mission probe communication links. The scope of this study includes functional design of the receiver; comparisons between analog and digital processing; hardware tradeoffs for key components including frequency generators, A/D converters, and digital processors; development and simulation of the processing algorithms for acquisition, tracking, and demodulation; and detailed design of the receiver in order to determine its size, weight, power, reliability, and radiation hardness. In addition, an evaluation was made of the receiver's capabilities to perform accurate measurement of signal strength and frequency for radio science missions
Broadly neutralizing human immunodeficiency virus type 1 antibody gene transfer protects nonhuman primates from mucosal simian-human immunodeficiency virus infection
Broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs) can prevent lentiviral infection in nonhuman primates and may slow the spread of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). Although protection by passive transfer of human bnAbs has been demonstrated in monkeys, durable expression is essential for its broader use in humans. Gene-based expression of bnAbs provides a potential solution to this problem, although immune responses to the viral vector or to the antibody may limit its durability and efficacy. Here, we delivered an adeno-associated viral vector encoding a simianized form of a CD4bs bnAb, VRC07, and evaluated its immunogenicity and protective efficacy. The expressed antibody circulated in macaques for 16 weeks at levels up to 66 μg/ml, although immune suppression with cyclosporine (CsA) was needed to sustain expression. Gene-delivered simian VRC07 protected against simian-human immunodeficiency virus (SHIV) infection in monkeys 5.5 weeks after treatment. Gene transfer of an anti-HIV antibody can therefore protect against infection by viruses that cause AIDS in primates when the host immune responses are controlled
Acid Rain: Multilateral and Bilateral Approaches to Transboundary Pollution under International Law
This article seeks to examine the difficult problem of acid rain in an international law context. It begins by discussing the environmental difficulties that may be created by acid rain. Within this context, the authors then discuss the development of customary international law relevant to the question of acid rain. Following this, the authors move to a more specific discussion of multilateral and bilateral arrangements dealing with transboundary pollution with special emphasis on American-Canadian relations. Finally, the authors conclude by assessing the difficulties associated with the development of legal standards in this areaCette étude cherchera à examiner l'énorme probleme des précipitations acides à l'intérieur d'un contexte de droit international. solveME: fast and reliable solution of nonlinear ME models.
BackgroundGenome-scale models of metabolism and macromolecular expression (ME) significantly expand the scope and predictive capabilities of constraint-based modeling. ME models present considerable computational challenges: they are much (>30 times) larger than corresponding metabolic reconstructions (M models), are multiscale, and growth maximization is a nonlinear programming (NLP) problem, mainly due to macromolecule dilution constraints.ResultsHere, we address these computational challenges. We develop a fast and numerically reliable solution method for growth maximization in ME models using a quad-precision NLP solver (Quad MINOS). Our method was up to 45 % faster than binary search for six significant digits in growth rate. We also develop a fast, quad-precision flux variability analysis that is accelerated (up to 60× speedup) via solver warm-starts. Finally, we employ the tools developed to investigate growth-coupled succinate overproduction, accounting for proteome constraints.ConclusionsJust as genome-scale metabolic reconstructions have become an invaluable tool for computational and systems biologists, we anticipate that these fast and numerically reliable ME solution methods will accelerate the wide-spread adoption of ME models for researchers in these fields
South African Corporations and post-Apartheid Expansion in Africa – creating a new regional space
The defeat of Apartheid in 1994 liberated not only South Africa’s internal political processes but also its economic relations with neighbouring countries in the Southern African Development Community (SADC). A key outcome was the surge of South African capital northward after years of dampened large scale investment because of legal sanction and more informal regulation. By the early 2000s, South African mining and industrial corporations, financial institutions and even some medium-sized enterprises have once again asserted their role as a dominant force in the SADC region. South Africa’s economic expansion is sometimes portrayed as a one-way process, where local environments and communities are passive recipients of SouthAfrican-led interventions. But evidence increasingly suggests that penetration of the region is highly contested by host countries, and sometimes actively and effectively resisted at local level. In other words, elements of both ‘sub-imperialism’ and local subversion are at play
The Southern 2MASS AGN Survey: spectroscopic follow-up with 6dF
The Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) has provided a uniform photometric
catalog to search for previously unknown red AGN and QSOs. We have extended the
search to the southern equatorial sky by obtaining spectra for 1182 AGN
candidates using the 6dF multifibre spectrograph on the UK Schmidt Telescope.
These were scheduled as auxiliary targets for the 6dF Galaxy Redshift Survey.
The candidates were selected using a single color cut of J - Ks > 2 to Ks ~
15.5 and a galactic latitude of |b|>30 deg. 432 spectra were of sufficient
quality to enable a reliable classification. 116 sources (or ~27%) were
securely classified as type 1 AGN, 20 as probable type 1s, and 57 as probable
type 2 AGN. Most of them span the redshift range 0.05<z<0.5 and only 8 (or ~6%)
were previously identified as AGN or QSOs. Our selection leads to a
significantly higher AGN identification rate amongst local galaxies (>20%) than
in any previous galaxy survey. A small fraction of the type 1 AGN could have
their optical colors reddened by optically thin dust with A_V<2 mag relative to
optically selected QSOs. A handful show evidence for excess far-IR emission.
The equivalent width (EW) and color distributions of the type 1 and 2 AGN are
consistent with AGN unified models. In particular, the EW of the [OIII]
emission line weakly correlates with optical--near-IR color in each class of
AGN, suggesting anisotropic obscuration of the AGN continuum. Overall, the
optical properties of the 2MASS red AGN are not dramatically different from
those of optically-selected QSOs. Our near-IR selection appears to detect the
most near-IR luminous QSOs in the local universe to z~0.6 and provides
incentive to extend the search to deeper near-IR surveys.Comment: 57 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables, to appear in vol.27/4 of Publications
