M Theory on and Superconformal Field Theories
We study the large N limit of the interacting superconformal field theories associated with N M5 branes or M2 branes using the recently proposed relation between these theories and M theory on AdS spaces. We first analyze the spectrum of chiral operators of the 6d (0,2) theory associated with M5 branes in flat space, and find full agreement with earlier results obtained using its DLCQ description as quantum mechanics on a moduli space of instantons. We then perform a similar analysis for the D_N type 6d (0,2) theories associated with M5 branes at an R^5/Z_2 singularity, and for the 3d N=8 superconformal field theories associated with M2 branes in flat space and at an R^8/Z_2 singularity respectively. Little is known about these three theories, and our study yields for the first time their spectrum of chiral operators (in the large N limit)
A composite sandwich plate with a novel core design
© 2018 Elsevier Ltd In this study, a new core design is introduced for sandwich composite structures. Its strength and failure behavior are investigated via three-point bending tests. E-glass-fiber-reinforced epoxy resin is selected as the material for both the core and the face sheets. The core has an egg-crate shape. Acoustic emission (AE) method is used to detect the progression of damage. Signals due to elastic waves caused by activated damage mechanisms are investigated in order to identify the corresponding failure modes. A finite element model of the sandwich structure is developed to predict the failure behavior of the specimens under the loading conditions in the tests. A promising agreement between the results of the finite element model and the experiments is observed. The force-deflection-relation, the failure load as well as the region where damage initiates are accurately predicted

Cholecystokinin B-type Receptors Mediate a G-Protein-Dependent Depolarizing Action of Sulphated Cholecystokinin Ocatapeptide (CCK-8s) on Rodent Neonatal Spinal Ventral Horn Neurons
Reports of cholecystokinin (CCK) binding and expression of CCK receptors in neonatal rodent spinal cord suggest that CCK may influence neuronal excitability. In patch-clamp recordings from 19/21 ventral horn motoneurons in neonatal (PN 5–12 days) rat spinal cord slices, we noted a slowly rising and prolonged membrane depolarization induced by bath-applied sulfated CCK octapeptide (CCK-8s; 1 μM), blockable by the CCKB receptor antagonist L-365,260 (1 μM). Responses to nonsulfated CCK-8 or CCK-4 were significantly weaker. Under voltage clamp (VH −65 mV), 22/24 motoneurons displayed a CCK-8s-induced tetrodotoxin-resistant inward current [peak: −136 ± 28 pA] with a similar time course, mediated via reduction in a potassium conductance. In 29/31 unidentified neurons, CCK-8s induced a significantly smaller inward current (peak: −42.8 ± 5.6 pA), and I-V plots revealed either membrane conductance decrease with net inward current reversal at 101.3 ± 4.4 mV (n = 16), membrane conductance increase with net current reversing at 36.1 ± 3.8 mV (n = 4), or parallel shift (n = 9). Intracellular GTP-γ-S significantly prolonged the effect of CCK-8s (n = 6), whereas GDP-β-S significantly reduced the CCK-8s response (n = 6). Peak inward currents were significantly reduced after 5-min perfusion with N-ethylmaleimide. In isolated neonatal mouse spinal cord preparations, CCK-8s (30–300 nM) increased the amplitude and discharge of spontaneous depolarizations recorded from lumbosacral ventral roots. These observations imply functional postsynaptic G-protein-coupled CCKB receptors are prevalent in neonatal rodent spinal cord
On the fermionic T-duality of the AdS_4 \times CP^3 sigma-model
In this note we consider a fermionic T-duality of the coset realization of
the type IIA sigma-model on AdS_4 \times CP^3 with respect to the three flat
directions in AdS_4, six of the fermionic coordinates and three of the CP^3
directions. We show that the Buscher procedure fails as it leads to a singular
transformation and discuss the result and its implications.Comment: LaTeX2e, 9 pages, no figures, JHEP style; v2: minor clarifications;

Electron trapping and acceleration by the plasma wakefield of a self-modulating proton beam
It is shown that co-linear injection of electrons or positrons into the
wakefield of the self-modulating particle beam is possible and ensures high
energy gain. The witness beam must co-propagate with the tail part of the
driver, since the plasma wave phase velocity there can exceed the light
velocity, which is necessary for efficient acceleration. If the witness beam is
many wakefield periods long, then the trapped charge is limited by beam loading
effects. The initial trapping is better for positrons, but at the acceleration
stage a considerable fraction of positrons is lost from the wave. For efficient
trapping of electrons, the plasma boundary must be sharp, with the density
transition region shorter than several centimeters. Positrons are not
susceptible to the initial plasma density gradient.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, 1 table, 44 reference
BMN Operators for N=1 Superconformal Yang-Mills Theories and Associated String Backgrounds
We study a class of near-BPS operators for a complex 2-parameter family of
N=1 superconformal Yang-Mills theories that can be obtained by a
Leigh-Strassler deformation of N=4 SYM theory. We identify these operators in
the large N and large R-charge limit and compute their exact scaling dimensions
using N=1 superspace methods. From these scaling dimensions we attempt to
reverse-engineer the light-cone worldsheet theory that describes string
propagation on the Penrose limit of the dual geometry.Comment: 47 pages, 1 figure, 1 table; v2 a few typos corrected; v3 added

Supergravity, Non-Conformal Field Theories and Brane-Worlds
We consider the supergravity dual descriptions of non-conformal super
Yang-Mills theories realized on the world-volume of Dp-branes. We use the dual
description to compute stress-energy tensor and current correlators. We apply
the results to the study of dilatonic brane-worlds described by non-conformal
field theories coupled to gravity. We find that brane-worlds based on D4 and D5
branes exhibit a localization of gauge and gravitational fields. We calculate
the corrections to the Newton and Coulomb laws in these theories.Comment: 24 pages, Latex, 2 figure
