    Comportamiento de elementos estructurales de compuestos híbridos base cemento frente a impacto de torre de caída

    The performance, under drop-weight impact load, of hybrid cement composite (HCC) elements, consisting of a top layer of plain concrete (PC) and a bottom layer of fibre reinforced concrete (FRC), in comparison with full-depth FRC and PC was studied. Apart from improving the tensile capacity of PC and saving fibre steel reinforcements of FRC, the results showed that HCC can effectively control the deformations and enhance the impact performance of the structural members as its outcomes were similar to that of a full-depth FRC. The analytical studies using Hughes empirical formulae (HEF) and yield line theory (YLT) adopted to investigate the practical use of HCC showed that they are applicable for design such HCC elements against impacts.Se estudió el comportamiento, frente a impacto de torre de caída, de elementos híbridos base cemento (HCC), formados por una capa superior de hormigón en masa (PC) y una capa inferior de hormigón reforzado con fibras (FRC) en comparación con elementos análogos íntegramente fabricados con FRC y PC. Además de proporcionar una mejora en la resistencia frente a flexo-tracción de los PC y un ahorro en refuerzo usando fibras de acero en el caso de los FRC, los resultados mostraron que el HCC puede controlar eficazmente las deformaciones y mejorar el rendimiento frente a impacto de los elementos estructurales ya que sus resultados fueron análogos a la de los FRC.     Probabilistic seismic hazard and risk assessment in Spain

    This monograph explains how probabilistic seismic risk assessments can be performed at different resolution levels using the same methodology, providing results in terms of the same metrics; but it also highlights what the differences in terms of inputs for the analysis are in the different cases. A country level assessment is first performed using a coarsegrain exposure database that includes only the building stock in the urban regions of Spain. A detailed urban seismic risk assessment is performed for Lorca, Murcia, Spain. In both cases, the fully probabilistic seismic risk results are expressed in terms of the loss exceedance curve, which is the main output, from where different probabilistic risk metrics, such as the average annual loss and the probable maximum loss can be derived. Because of the damage data availability for the Lorca, May 2011, earthquake, a comparison between the observed losses and those modelled using an earthquake scenario with similar characteristics in terms of location, magnitude and spectral accelerations was done for the building stock of the city. The results of the comparison are presented in terms of expected losses (in monetary terms) and damage levels related to the obtained mean damage ratios are compared with those observed by post-earthquake surveys. This monograph is an effort to explain, in a transparent and comprehensive way, through a step by step example, how risk can be calculated in probabilistic terms and what are the influences of the inputs in each of the stages and what the obtained results mean. After reviewing several available tools to estimate catastrophe risk by means of probabilistic approaches, the CAPRA Platform was chosen because its flexibility, compatibility with the assessments to be performed at different resolution levels and its open-source/freeware characteristics

    On the mechanism of iodine oxide particle formation

    The formation of atmospherically relevant iodine oxides IxO y (x = 1,...,3, y = 1,...,7) has been studied experimentally using time-of-flight mass spectrometry combined with a soft ionisation source, complemented with ab initio electronic structure calculations of ionisation potentials and bond energies at a high level of theory presented in detail in the accompanying paper (Galvez et al., 2013). For the first time, direct experimental evidence of the I2Oy (y = 1,...,5) molecules in the gas phase has been obtained. These chemical species are observed alongside their precursors (IO and OIO) in experiments where large amounts of aerosol are also generated. The measured relative concentrations of the I xOy molecules and their dependence on ozone concentration have been investigated by using chemical modelling and rate theory calculations. It is concluded that I2O4 is the most plausible candidate to initiate nucleation, while the contribution of I2O5 in the initial steps is likely to be marginal. The absence of large I 3Oy (y = 3,...,6) peaks in the mass spectra and the high stability of the I2O4-I2O4 dimer indicate that dimerisation of I2O4 is the key step in iodine oxide particle nucleation

    Probing M subdwarf metallicity with an esdK5+esdM5.5 binary

    We present a spectral analysis of the binary G 224-58 AB that consists of the coolest M extreme subdwarf (esdM5.5) and a brighter primary (esdK5). This binary may serve as a benchmark for metallicity measurement calibrations and as a test-bed for atmospheric and evolutionary models for esdM objects. We determine abundances primarily using high resolution optical spectra of the primary. Other parameters were determined from the fits of synthetic spectra computed with these abundances to the observed spectra from 0.4 to 2.5 microns for both components. We determine \Tef =4625 ±\pm 100 K, \logg = 4.5 ±\pm 0.5 for the A component and \Tef = 3200 ±\pm 100 K, \logg = 5.0 ±\pm 0.5, for the B component. We obtained abundances of [Mg/H]=-1.51±\pm0.08, [Ca/H]=-1.39±\pm0.03, [Ti/H]=-1.37±\pm0.03 for alpha group elements and [CrH]=-1.88±\pm0.07, [Mn/H]=-1.96±\pm0.06, [Fe/H]=-1.92±\pm0.02, [Ni/H]=-1.81±\pm0.05 and [Ba/H]W=-1.87±\pm0.11 for iron group elements from fits to the spectral lines observed in the optical and infrared spectral regions of the primary. We find consistent abundances with fits to the secondary albeit at lower signal-to-noise. Abundances of elements in \ga and \gb atmospheres cannot be described by one metallicity parameter. The offset of \sim 0.4 dex between the abundances derived from alpha element and iron group elements corresponds with our expectation for metal-deficient stars. We thus clarify that some indices used to date to measure metallicities for establishing esdM stars based on CaH, MgH and TiO band system strength ratios in the optical and H2_2O in the infrared relate to abundances of alpha-element group rather than to iron peak elements.     GTI-space : the space of generalized topological indices

    A new extension of the generalized topological indices (GTI) approach is carried out torepresent 'simple' and 'composite' topological indices (TIs) in an unified way. Thisapproach defines a GTI-space from which both simple and composite TIs represent particular subspaces. Accordingly, simple TIs such as Wiener, Balaban, Zagreb, Harary and Randićconnectivity indices are expressed by means of the same GTI representation introduced for composite TIs such as hyper-Wiener, molecular topological index (MTI), Gutman index andreverse MTI. Using GTI-space approach we easily identify mathematical relations between some composite and simple indices, such as the relationship between hyper-Wiener and Wiener index and the relation between MTI and first Zagreb index. The relation of the GTI space with the sub-structural cluster expansion of property/activity is also analysed and some routes for the applications of this approach to QSPR/QSAR are also given

    Calculation methods of Radon-222 radiological activity for NORM plant with ventilation

    A procedure is proposed to determine the radiological activity of air present in the working area of a NORM (Naturally-Occurring Radioactive Materials) plant. This NORM plant is located in the United Arab Emirates and is dedicated to the recycling of material and equipment used in oil extraction facilities. Substantial quantities of NORM waste will be present inside the enclosed plant facilities and will exhale significant amounts of Radon-222 into the working environment. The continued inhalation of this gas and its progeny has been shown to cause lung cancer. In order to reduce the concentration level of the aforementioned gas to an acceptable regulatory value, the best solution is by means of mechanical ventilation. The two calculation methods used to analysis the relationship between the ventilation rate and the degree of radioactive contamination are considered. The first being ventilation by perfect dilution, commonly employed in industrial environments with radiological contamination. The second method of analysis is by means of a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) which permits a more precise calculation of the required fresh air quantity and spatial concentrations. Validation was carried out in a small experimental plant space, obtaining results reasonable approximate to those predicted by the computational analysis. The similarities and differences between the respective calculation methods and their respective fields of application are analyzed. It is concluded that for lower air change rates, less than five air changes per hour, the CFD analysis is the most appropriate method. By contrast, when using a higher rate of outside air changes in the plant, the perfect dilution method should be sufficient enough to control the presence of radon and its progeny.     Air diffusion system design in large assembly halls. Case study of the Congress of Deputies parliament building, Madrid, Spain

    The paper describes and analyses the air distribution solution adopted in the refurbishment of the Spanish Congress of Deputies assembly hall. A new approach is proposed for the design of displacement ventilation systems. The system performance is methodically validated both with laboratory tests, computational fluid dynamics analysis and experimental field measurements related to the environmental performance of the built environment. In assembly halls, microclimate and displacement ventilation systems, which supply air by means of floor mounted outlets, have been shown to perform adequately. In this case study floor air supply is not feasible. The solution adapted uses parapet mounted diffusers, using a confluent jet flow parallel to the floor plane above the occupied area. All the tools used to analyse the performance of this system showed that the admixing overhead supply, with ceiling return, and flowing parallel to and above the occupied zone is drawn back into the occupied zone, creating a plume effect similar to that of floor mounted displacement outlets. Thus, this confirms that the displacement effect can be accomplished using a high induction turbulent overhead supply with ceiling return. Therefore supplying air directly into the occupied zone, at or near to floor level, is not a prerequisite to achieve the desired displacement effect. This report concludes that, using the correct design parameters, as set out in this paper, the displacement ventilation effect is independent of the plane of air supply. The conclusions suggest that accepted criteria for the definition and design of displacement systems should be redefined

    Cyanobacteria reduction in the integrated culture of Pacific white shrimp and West India pointed venus in a biofloc system

    This study aimed to evaluate the integrated culture of the Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) and the West Indian pointed venus (Anomalocardia flexuosa) reared in a biofloc system. The performance of both species and the phytoplankton community were evaluated. Shrimp monoculture and three stocking densities of West Indian pointed venus (2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 Kg m-3) were evaluated in 0.05 m3 tanks. First of all, the addition of A. brasiliana did not affect the water quality parameters of the culture. Regarding the phytoplankton community, 13 taxa were found: 5 cyanobacteria, 4 dinoflagellates, 3 diatoms and 1 green algae. Although diatoms were dominant at the beginning of cultivation, in the middle and at the end a cyanobacterial dominance was observed (proven by ANOSIM and nMDS). The taxa that most contributed to the abundance of cyanobacteria were Aphanocapsa sp. and Pseudanabaena sp. Regarding the performance of the shrimp, all integrated treatments present the higher growth performances (final weight, yield and survival) when compared to shrimp monoculture. Moreover, gradual mortalities of A. brasiliana were observed, probably due to the high concentration of cyanobacteria. Thus, it can be observed that the integration of molluscs in shrimp culture can reduce the concentration of harmful algae and improve the zootechnical performance of the shrimp

    Predicting the distribution of canine leishmaniasis in western Europe based on environmental variables.

    The domestic dog is the reservoir host of Leishmania infantum, the causative agent of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis endemic in Mediterranean Europe. Targeted control requires predictive risk maps of canine leishmaniasis (CanL), which are now explored. We databased 2187 published and unpublished surveys of CanL in southern Europe. A total of 947 western surveys met inclusion criteria for analysis, including serological identification of infection (504, 369 dogs tested 1971-2006). Seroprevalence was 23 2% overall (median 10%). Logistic regression models within a GIS framework identified the main environmental predictors of CanL seroprevalence in Portugal, Spain, France and Italy, or in France alone. A 10-fold cross-validation approach determined model capacity to predict point-values of seroprevalence and the correct seroprevalence class (20%). Both the four-country and France-only models performed reasonably well for predicting correctly the 20% seroprevalence classes (AUC >0 70). However, the France-only model performed much better for France than the four-country model. The four-country model adequately predicted regions of CanL emergence in northern Italy (<5% seroprevalence). Both models poorly predicted intermediate point seroprevalences (5-20%) within regional foci, because surveys were biased towards known rural foci and Mediterranean bioclimates. Our recommendations for standardizing surveys would permit higher-resolution risk mapping

    Este trabajo examina los diferentes factores que influyen en la toma de decisiones de los consumidores en los negocios de barrios. Uno de los descubrimientos de este estudio es la importancia que tienen las variables psicológicas y de identificación con la ciudad, lo cual demuestra la relevancia que dan los consumidores a la interacción que poseen con el medio que les rodea. Existieron doce variables que tuvieron un nivel de aceptación altamente significativa, como es la variable crédito informal, calidez en la atención, limpieza, fragmentación, nivel real de participación en la comunidad, ambiente, actitud positiva, confianza, comodidad, poco tiempo, alimentos típicos y edad. Las variables de mayor significancia fueron aquellas variables que se identifican con la ciudad, lo cual las hacen propia de esta realidad multicultural. AbstractThis work examines the different factors that influence in the taking of the consumer’s decisions in the neighborhood business.-One of discoveries of this study is the importance that they have the psychological variables and the identification with the city which show the relevance that they give the consumers to the interaction that they posses with the space that surrounds them.-Twelve variables that had a level of highly significant acceptance.
