    Necessary and Sufficient Conditions for the Solvability of Inverse Problem for a Class of Dirac Operators

    In this paper, we consider a problem for the first order Dirac differential equations system with spectral parameter dependent in boundary condition. The asymptotic behaviors of eigenvalues, eigenfunctions and normalizing numbers of this system are investigated. The expansion formula with respect to eigenfunctions is obtained and Parseval equality is given. The main theorem on necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvabilty of inverse problem is proved and the algorithm of reconstruction of potential from spectral data (the sets of eigenvalues and normalizing numbers) is given.Comment: 19 page

    Learning 2-opt Heuristics for the Traveling Salesman Problem via Deep Reinforcement Learning

    Recent works using deep learning to solve the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) have focused on learning construction heuristics. Such approaches find TSP solutions of good quality but require additional procedures such as beam search and sampling to improve solutions and achieve state-of-the-art performance. However, few studies have focused on improvement heuristics, where a given solution is improved until reaching a near-optimal one. In this work, we propose to learn a local search heuristic based on 2-opt operators via deep reinforcement learning. We propose a policy gradient algorithm to learn a stochastic policy that selects 2-opt operations given a current solution. Moreover, we introduce a policy neural network that leverages a pointing attention mechanism, which unlike previous works, can be easily extended to more general k-opt moves. Our results show that the learned policies can improve even over random initial solutions and approach near-optimal solutions at a faster rate than previous state-of-the-art deep learning methods.Comment: To appear in Proceedings Machine Learning Research - ACML 202

    Design and testing of disconnection actuators for enhancing safety and preventing failure escalation

    The growing demand for reliability has led to an increased interest in developing effective disconnection systems for enhancing the safety of and preventing failure escalation in engineering systems. Considering this prospect, the design optimization of two disconnection actuators composed of a coaxial magnetic coupling linked to an electromagnetic device is presented and discussed. The disconnection actuator delivers a contactless torque transmission through the coaxial magnetic coupling, whereas the torque transfer is interrupted by the electromagnetic device in case a failure is detected via a dedicated algorithm. The performed design procedure relies on 2D finite element analysis, and trade-off studies are carried out to achieve an optimized geometry of an electromagnetic device. Finally, two disconnection actuators, for high-speed and high-torque applications, are prototyped and tested, with the aim of evaluating their disconnection capability. For both disconnection actuators, the developed force and voltage–current characteristics are measured along with the disconnection time

    Concept and Demonstration of a Coaxial Magnetic Coupling with Electromagnetic Disconnection for Aircraft Permanent Magnet Generators

    The application of more electrified systems in aircraft is required to achieve the target of a more sustainable aviation industry. This in turn relies on the development of new electro-mechanical devices to ensure reliability of critical aircraft functions during flight. The aim of this work is to develop and test a device capable of protecting permanent magnet generators from damage, thus enabling the practical use of such high power density generators in aircraft while eliminating their inherent vulnerability to sustained electrical faults. A novel electromechanical actuator concept for decoupling a permanent magnetic generator from an aircraft gas turbine engine is introduced and experimentally validated. The proposed concept combines a coaxial magnetic coupling with an electromagnetic actuator, allowing for rapid disconnection in case of electrical fault detection. The 2D finite element magnetic analysis methodology employed in the design of the magnetic coupling and electromagnetic actuator is validated with experiments that reveal the peak torque results of the magnetic coupling are accurate to within a 2.5% error and the actuator can produce the 450 N pull force required for disconnection. The device is capable of operating at a maximum speed of 12,000 RPM and transmitting a load of 32 Nm

    Diazoxide-responsive hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia caused by HNF4A gene mutations

    Objective: The phenotype associated with heterozygous HNF4A gene mutations has recently been extended to include diazoxide responsive neonatal hypoglycemia in addition to maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY). To date, mutation screening has been limited to patients with a family history consistent with MODY. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of HNF4A mutations in a large cohort of patients with diazoxide responsive hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia (HH). Subjects and methods: We sequenced the ABCC8, KCNJ11, GCK, GLUD1, and/or HNF4A genes in 220 patients with HH responsive to diazoxide. The order of genetic testing was dependent upon the clinical phenotype. Results: A genetic diagnosis was possible for 59/220 (27%) patients. KATP channel mutations were most common (15%) followed by GLUD1 mutations causing hyperinsulinism with hyperammonemia (5.9%), and HNF4A mutations (5%). Seven of the 11 probands with a heterozygous HNF4A mutation did not have a parent affected with diabetes, and four de novo mutations were confirmed. These patients were diagnosed with HI within the first week of life (median age 1 day), and they had increased birth weight (median +2.4 SDS). The duration of diazoxide treatment ranged from 3 months to ongoing at 8 years. Conclusions: In this large series, HNF4A mutations are the third most common cause of diazoxide responsive HH. We recommend that HNF4A sequencing is considered in all patients with diazoxide responsive HH diagnosed in the first week of life irrespective of a family history of diabetes, once KATP channel mutations have been excluded

    Moving beyond European and Latin American Typologies:The Peculiarities of AKP’s Populism in Turkey

    Despite the growing literature on Turkish populism, there is yet no consensus on how best to categorise the Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi or AKP). This article argues that this lack of consensus is due to a selective focus on the attributes of AKP’s populism. Indeed, when the party’s features are examined holistically, it does not neatly conform to the dominant typologies of populism, which were conceived mostly for European and Latin American examples. For historical reasons, AKP’s populist discourse defines “the people” versus “the elite” in civilisational terms and combines this with strategies of neo-liberalism, strong party organisation and grassroots mobilisation. This blend of populism distinguishes the AKP case from the exclusionary/inclusionary and classical/neo-liberal/radical typologies previously identified by the literature. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party in India and the Thai Rak Thai Party in Thailand have similar attributes to the AKP, drawing attention to the need to move beyond the existing ideological and strategic approaches to populism and towards a more comprehensive socio-cultural approach. The article contributes to the literature on populism by highlighting possible avenues for further research based on such a comprehensive understanding of populism based also on cases from Asia

    Characteristics of patients operated for primary hyperparathyroidism at university hospitals in Türkiye: Differences among Türkiye's geographical regions

    Purpose: The aim of this study was to define the clinical and laboratory characteristics of patients operated on for primary hyperpatathyroidism (PHPT) at university hospitals in Türkiye, and to investigate the differences in the clinical presentations of the disease between different geographical regions. Methods: Patients operated on for PHPT in the university hospitals of Türkiye were included in the study. The demographic, clinical, and laboratory findings and the operational data of the patients were investigated according to the whole country and to different geographical regions. Comparisons were performed according to whole country and regions. Results: A total of 1,162 cases were included in the study from different regions and 20 university hospitals. The mean age of patients was 52.4 ± 0.38 (mean ± standard error) in the general population of Türkiye. The rates of hypertension, urolithiasis, bone disease and 25-hydroxyvitamin D insufficiency were 35%, 18.6%, 67.6%, and 63%, respectively. The median parathormone (PTH), serum total calcium (Ca+2) and phosphorus value were 220 pg/mL (range, 70-2,500 pg/mL), 11.2 mg/dL (range, 9.5-11.2 mg/dL), and 2.4 mg/dL (range, 1-4.7 mg/dL), respectively. The median size of the adenomas resected was 16 mm (range, 4-70 mm). Significant differences were observed in the clinical and laboratory findings of the patients operated on due to PHPT between different geographical regions of Türkiye (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The clinical and laboratory characteristics of the patients with PHPT in different geographical regions of Türkiye differ. Furthermore, the general findings of the cases in Türkiye give us a hint that the severity of the disease here is somewhere between Eastern and Western countries.
