    Organisms use circulating diuretic hormones to control water balance (osmolarity), thereby avoiding dehydration and managing excretion of waste products. The hormones act through G-protein-coupled receptors to activate second messenger systems that in turn control the permeability of secretory epithelia to ions like chloride. In insects, the chloride channel mediating the effects of diuretic hormones was unknown. Surprisingly, we find a pentameric, cys-loop chloride channel, a type of channel normally associated with neurotransmission, mediating hormone-induced transepithelial chloride conductance. This discovery is important because: 1) it describes an unexpected role for pentameric receptors in the membrane permeability of secretory epithelial cells, and 2) it suggests that neurotransmitter-gated ion channels may have evolved from channels involved in secretion

    Broken particle-hole symmetry at atomically flat a-axis YBa2Cu3O7-d interfaces

    We have studied quasiparticle tunneling into atomically flat a-axis films of YBa2Cu3O7-d and DyBa2Cu3O7-d through epitaxial CaTiO3 barriers. The junction heterostructures were grown by oxide molecular beam epitaxy and were carefully optimized using in-situ monitoring techniques, resulting in unprecedented crystalline perfection of the superconductor/insulator interface. Below Tc, the tunneling conductance shows the evolution of a large unexpected asymmetrical feature near zero bias. This is evidence that superconducting YBCO crystals, atomically truncated along the lobe direction with a titanate layer, have intrinsically broken particle-hole symmetry over macroscopically large areas.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures; v2 includes minor changes in concluding paragraph to match PRL versio

    Crystalfield symmetries of luminescent Eu3+ centers in GaN : the importance of the 5D0 to 7F1 transition

    Eu-doped GaN is a promising material with potential application not only in optoelectronics but also in magneto-optical and quantum optical devices ‘beyond the light emitting diode’. Its interesting spectroscopy is unfortunately complicated by spectral overlaps due to ‘site multiplicity’, the existence in a given sample of multiple composite centers in which Eu ions associate with intrinsic or extrinsic defects. We show here that elementary crystalfield analysis of the 5D0 to 7F1 transition can critically distinguish such sites. Hence, we find that the center involved in the hysteretic photochromic switching (HPS) observed in GaN(Mg):Eu, proposed as the basis of a new solid state qubit material, is not in fact Eu1, as previously reported, but a related defect, Eu1(Mg). Furthermore, the decomposition of the crystalfield distortions of Eu0, Eu1(Mg) and Eu1 into axial and non-axial components strongly suggests reasonable microscopic models for the defects themselves

    Pulmonary lymphangitis carcinomatosa is an unusal cause of death in a young adult. This case describes an apparently healthy young woman who presented with severe acute pancreatitis, which is a recognized complication of a choledochal cyst. Autopsy examination revealed advanced malignancy with poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma penetrating the wall of the choledochal cyst and metastatic adenocarcinoma in the lymph nodes, lungs and kidneys. This case emphasises the unusual presentation of a choledochal cyst with acute pancreatitis and the aggressive nature of malignancy associated with this congenital anomaly

    The effects of room design on computer-supported collaborative learning in a multi-touch classroom.

    While research indicates that technology can be useful for supporting learning and collaboration, there is still relatively little uptake or widespread implementation of these technologies in classrooms. In this paper, we explore one aspect of the development of a multi-touch classroom, looking at two different designs of the classroom environment to explore how classroom layout may influence group interaction and learning. Three classes of students working in groups of four were taught in the traditional forward-facing room condition, while three classes worked in a centered room condition. Our results indicate that while the outcomes on tasks were similar across conditions, groups engaged in more talk (but not more off-task talk) in a centered room layout, than in a traditional forward-facing room. These results suggest that the use of technology in the classroom may be influenced by the location of the technology, both in terms of the learning outcomes and the interaction behaviors of students. The findings highlight the importance of considering the learning environment when designing technology to support learning, and ensuring that integration of technology into formal learning environments is done with attention to how the technology may disrupt, or contribute to, the classroom interaction practices

    The 63^{63}Ni(n,Îł\gamma) cross section measured with DANCE

    The neutron capture cross section of the s-process branch nucleus 63^{63}Ni affects the abundances of other nuclei in its region, especially 63^{63}Cu and 64^{64}Zn. In order to determine the energy dependent neutron capture cross section in the astrophysical energy region, an experiment at the Los Alamos National Laboratory has been performed using the calorimetric 4π\pi BaF2_2 array DANCE. The (n,Îł\gamma) cross section of 63^{63}Ni has been determined relative to the well known 197^{197}Au standard with uncertainties below 15%. Various 63^{63}Ni resonances have been identified based on the Q-value. Furthermore, the s-process sensitivity of the new values was analyzed with the new network calculation tool NETZ.Comment: 11 pages, 13 page

    Elimination of TFA-Mediated Cleavage in Distributed Drug Discovery

    Distributed Drug Discovery (D3) is a multi-disciplinary approach to the discovery of new drugs, which target neglected diseases or conditions common to developing-world countries. As part of a continuing effort to improve D3 methodology, two approaches for eliminating the final step TFA-mediated resin cleavage are proposed for investigation. Cleavage under basic conditions (saponification) and mild acid conditions (dilute HCl/hexafluoroisopropanol or dilute HCl/trifluoroethanol) represent improvements in safety and convenience to the undergraduate student researcher. Previous studies have shown that saponification provides yields comparable to the traditional TFA cleavage but recovery is not as convenient. Further improvements in the saponification workup will be evaluated by analyzing the effectiveness of simple trituration with acetone compared to use of a strong anion-exchange resin or drying reagents to isolate the free acid from the salt. Different trituration procedural modifications have been made and are being tested. Results have shown that in the presence of methanol, esterification will occur when the acid is liberated from the salt using HCl. To counter this problem, the samples are first evaporated to remove methanol and then the pH is adjusted with HCl. It was shown that using acetic acid did not result in pH levels low enough to guarantee complete protonation of the carboxylate. Through the use of a Bill-Board, an apparatus that holds six reaction vessels, several procedural modifications can be carried out simultaneously. Analysis is conducted by liquid chromatography coupled with a mass spectrometer and with nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Further studies will be carried out to assess the efficiency and practicality of using mild acidic conditions for cleavage using HCl/hexafluoroisopropanol or dilute HCl/trifluoroethanol. Both saponification and mild acid cleavage would represent improvements in safety and convenience to the undergraduate student researcher
