Monthly, annual and quarterly frequencies: a comparison of models for tourism in Sardinia and bounded rationality

    Get PDF
This paper constructs and estimates the demand for international tourism for the Italian Province of Sassari. The sample period under estimation is from 1972 to 1995. Three dynamic models are estimated at monthly, annual and quarterly data frequencies. Similarities and differences are explored amongst the three models, using recently developed econometric techniques. A "pre-modelling" data analysis is undertaken for the economic series of interest. By adopting the LSE "general-to-specific" methodology, dynamic estimations are run. A full range of diagnostic tests is provided. Short and long run income elasticities, negativity and substitutability are tested on the light of economic theory. On balance, evidence is found that the monthly and quarterly models present homogenous results in terms of seasonal and long run unit roots. Annual data show different and perhaps misleading results.

Operation of a novel hot electron vertical cavity surface emitting laser

The hot Electron Light Emission and Lasing in Semiconductor Heterostructures devices (HELLISH-1) is novel surface emitter consisting of a GaAs quantum well, within the depletion region, on the n side of Ga 1-xAlxAs p- n junction. It utilizes hot electron transport parallel to the layers and injection of hot electron hole pairs into the quantum well through a combination of mechanisms including tunnelling, thermionic emission and diffusion of 'lucky' carriers. Super Radiant HELLISH-1 is an advanced structure incorporating a lower distributed Bragg reflector (DBR). Combined with the finite reflectivity of the upper semiconductor-air interface reflectivity it defines a quasi- resonant cavity enabling emission output from the top surface with a higher spectral purity. The output power has increased by two orders of magnitude and reduced the full width at half maximum (FWHM) to 20 nm. An upper DBR added to the structure defines HELLISH-VCSEL which is currently the first operational hot electron surface emitting laser and lases at room temperature with a 1.5 nm FWHM. In this work we demonstrate and compare the operation of UB-HELLISH-1 and HELLISH-VCSEL using experimental and theoretical reflectivity spectra over an extensive temperature range. ©2003 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering

RGDS peptides immobilized on titanium alloy stimulate bone cell attachment, differentiation and confer resistance to apoptosis

A major cause of implant failure in skeletal tissues is failure of osseointegration, often due to lack of adhesion of cells to the titanium (Ti) alloy interface. Since arginine- glycine-aspartic acid (RGD)-containing peptides have been shown to regulate osteoblast adhesion, we tested the hypothesis that, bound to a Ti surface, these peptides would promote osteoblasts differentiation, while at the same time inhibit apoptosis. RGDS and RGES (control) peptides were covalently linked to Ti discs using an APTS linker. While the grafting of both RGDS and RGES significantly increased Ti surface roughness, contact angle analysis showed that APTS significantly increased the surface hydrophobicity; when the peptides were tethered to Ti, this was reduced. To evaluate attachment, MC3T3-E1 osteoblast cells were grown on these discs. Significantly more cells attached to the Ti-grafted RGDS then the Ti-grafted RGES control. Furthermore, expression of the osteoblasts phenotype was significantly enhanced on the Ti-grafted RGDS surface. When cells attached to the Ti-grafted RGDS were challenged with staurosporine, an apoptogen, there was significant inhibition of apoptosis; in contrast, osteoblasts adherent to the Ti-grafted RGES were killed. It is concluded that RGD-containing peptides covalently bonded to Ti promotes osteoblasts attachment and survival with minimal changes to the surface of the alloy. Therefore, such modifications to Ti would have the potential to promote osseointegration in vivo

Observation of exclusive DVCS in polarized electron beam asymmetry measurements

We report the first results of the beam spin asymmetry measured in the reaction e + p -> e + p + gamma at a beam energy of 4.25 GeV. A large asymmetry with a sin(phi) modulation is observed, as predicted for the interference term of Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering and the Bethe-Heitler process. The amplitude of this modulation is alpha = 0.202 +/- 0.028. In leading-order and leading-twist pQCD, the alpha is directly proportional to the imaginary part of the DVCS amplitude.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

Complex relationships among personality traits, job characteristics, and work behaviors

    Get PDF
The aim of the study was to investigate the additive, mediating, and moderating effects of personality traits and job characteristics on work behaviors. Job applicants (N = 161) completed personality questionnaires measuring extraversion, neuroticism, achievement motivation, and experience seeking. One and a half years later, supervisors rated the applicants' job performance, and the job incumbents completed questionnaires about skill variety, autonomy, and feedback, work stress, job satisfaction, work self-efficacy, and propensity to leave. LISREL was used to test 15 hypotheses. Perceived feedback mediated the relationship between achievement motivation and job performance. Extraversion predicted work self-efficacy and job satisfaction. Work stress mediated the relationship between neuroticism and job satisfaction. Job satisfaction and experience seeking were related to propensity to leave. Autonomy, skill variety, and feedback were related to job satisfaction
