Do price limits help control stock price volatility

    No full text
On the negative side, price limits are criticized for increasing stock price volatilityand hindering the price discovery process. On the positive side, price limits are arguedto give panicky investors additional time to reassess their judgments and thus provide anopportunity for correcting the element of overreaction in pricing stocks. This study analyzesthe effectiveness of price limits in Borsa Istanbul by utilizing a propensity-matched controlsample in addition to the traditional benchmarks used in the literature. Similar to recentresearch, we find strong evidence that price limits lead to increased and persistent pricevolatility and decreased liquidity. We also provide evidence that price limits interfere withthe price discovery process. Results show that smaller stocks with larger volatility and highertrading volume are more likely to experience limit hits. Furthermore, the difference in thefindings from the matched control sample and the traditional benchmarks points out theimportance of accounting for firm- and market-related characteristics when analyzing theeffect of price limits

Capital distribution policy and information asymmetry: A real estate market perspective.

    No full text
This article examines the relation between the distribution of capital to real estate investors and a market-based measure of information asymmetry. Previous research suggests that information asymmetries decrease as capital is distributed to outside investors. However, little attention has been given to those firms for which the marginal benefit of increased distributions may be small. Our analyses are based on a sample of real estate investment trusts (REITs), which are popularly characterized as high yield investments due to the regulation of a minimum distribution policy. The extent to which information asymmetry is influenced by these regulations, as well as by the opaque nature of the underlying assets, is an interesting empirical question. The results based on several years of data indicate that the perception of asymmetric information is lower for REITs that distribute more capital to their shareholders. A decomposition of yield into income and return-of-capital components reveals no differential effect in information relevance. The insights drawn from the results may be useful in determining the efficacy of real estate capital distribution policies and regulations

Cd and Pb Levels in the Soft Tissue of Black Mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) Collected from Marmara Sea, Pendik District Coastal Area, Istanbul, Turkey

The aim of this study was to determe cadmium and lead concentrations in the whole soft tissue of the black mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis Lamarck, 1819) (n=60) caught from Pendik district coasts of Istanbul, Turkey. According to legal standards of Turkish Food Codex (TFC) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) standards the level of Cd was low white that of Pb was high. The highest Pb concentration found in the whole soft tissue of mussels at S4 was 8.66 (February), 6.64 (January), 4.72 ppm Pb (July 2011) whereas in S5 it is 8.66 (November), 8.14 (February), 6.64 (October), 4.57 ppm (June 2012)

Background: Since its emergence, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been a challenge to manage and has resulted in high mortality rates. Aim: This study aimed to reveal the differences in the parameters at the time during the first admission, according to age groups in patients who applied due to Covid-19 and died in the hospital. Methods: This was a retrospective, cross-sectional, and descriptive study covering the period from March 16 to May 9, 2021. The study population (1169 patients) included patients with COVID-19 who presented to the emergency department and died in the hospital. The data required for this study were obtained from the electronic medical records of the patients in the information system of our hospital. The patients were divided into three groups and analyzed. Results: It was determined that the highest mortality rate was 547 (46.8%) in the 65-80 age group. In terms of comorbidities, there was a statistically significant difference between the three groups only in the incidence of asthma (p = 0.037). When the laboratory parameters and patient age groups were compared; a statistically significant difference was found in D-dimer, ferritin, WBC, platelet, and neutrophil values (respectively: p=0.001, p=0.020, p=0.005, p=0.029, p=0.037). Conclusion: The highest death rate in Covid 19 patients is seen in the 65-80 age group. In patients over 80 years of age, the presence of asthma and the increase in D-dimer and ferritin levels among laboratory parameters can be used to predict mortality

Enhanced and resumed GB virus C replication in HIV-1-infected individuals receiving HAART.

In patients co-infected with HIV-1 and GB virus C (GBV-C), the disappearance of GBV-C RNA has been associated with accelerated disease progression. We studied longitudinal GBV-C viral titres in 28 HIV-1/GVB-C co-infected individuals receiving HAART. During HAART, median GBV-C RNA titres increased from 95 to 6000 copies/ml (P < 0.001). In patients interrupting HAART, GBV-C-RNA titres decreased as HIV replication resumed. These findings further support the theory that GBV-C replication could depend on the dynamics of HIV progression
