On formation of domain wall lattices
We study the formation of domain walls in a phase transition in which an
S_5\times Z_2 symmetry is spontaneously broken to S_3\times S_2. In one compact
spatial dimension we observe the formation of a stable domain wall lattice. In
two spatial dimensions we find that the walls form a network with junctions,
there being six walls to every junction. The network of domain walls evolves so
that junctions annihilate anti-junctions. The final state of the evolution
depends on the relative dimensions of the simulation domain. In particular we
never observe the formation of a stable lattice of domain walls for the case of
a square domain but we do observe a lattice if one dimension is somewhat
smaller than the other. During the evolution, the total wall length in the
network decays with time as t^{-0.71}, as opposed to the usual t^{-1} scaling

Predicting the critical density of topological defects in O(N) scalar field theories
O(N) symmetric field theories describe many critical
phenomena in the laboratory and in the early Universe. Given N and ,
the dimension of space, these models exhibit topological defect classical
solutions that in some cases fully determine their critical behavior. For N=2,
D=3 it has been observed that the defect density is seemingly a universal
quantity at T_c. We prove this conjecture and show how to predict its value
based on the universal critical exponents of the field theory. Analogously, for
general N and D we predict the universal critical densities of domain walls and
monopoles, for which no detailed thermodynamic study exists. This procedure can
also be inverted, producing an algorithm for generating typical defect networks
at criticality, in contrast to the canonical procedure, which applies only in

The role of point-like topological excitations at criticality: from vortices to global monopoles
We determine the detailed thermodynamic behavior of vortices in the O(2)
scalar model in 2D and of global monopoles in the O(3) model in 3D. We
construct new numerical techniques, based on cluster decomposition algorithms,
to analyze the point defect configurations. We find that these criteria produce
results for the Kosterlitz-Thouless temperature in agreement with a topological
transition between a polarizable insulator and a conductor, at which free
topological charges appear in the system. For global monopoles we find no pair
unbinding transition. Instead a transition to a dense state where pairs are no
longer distinguishable occurs at T<Tc, without leading to long range disorder.
We produce both extensive numerical evidence of this behavior as well as a
semi-analytic treatment of the partition function for defects. General
expectations for N=D>3 are drawn, based on the observed behavior.Comment: 14 pages, REVTEX, 13 eps figure
Effects of Exercise on Quality of Life in Subjects with Alzheimer’s Disease: Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials
Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia that progressively affects memory, thinking, and behavior. It can interfere with daily activities and lead to a decline in cognitive abilities over time. Exercise-based interventions can complement Alzheimer’s disease treatment. Exercise is a valuable tool in all healthcare settings and has shown promise as an effective cognitive improvement intervention for people with cognitive impairments. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to analyze the effect of physical exercise on the QoL of subjects with Alzheimer’s disease. A search was performed with the help of the electronic databases PubMed and Web of Science. Randomized controlled trials with exercise-based interventions were selected. Four studies met the inclusion criteria, which included interventions based on exercise. The effects were summarized using standardized mean differences (95% confidence intervals) using random-effect models. The results showed that exercise had no significant effect on the QoL of subjects with Alzheimer. Thus, the effect of exercise interventions on the QoL of patients with Alzheimer’s disease is not conclusive. More research is needed about this topic and the way in which the QoL is assessed; the necessity to conduct an objective way to assess the QoL in this population is mandatory.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Numerical simulations of string networks in the Abelian-Higgs model
We present the results of a field theory simulation of networks of strings in
the Abelian Higgs model. Starting from a random initial configuration we show
that the resulting vortex tangle approaches a self-similar regime in which the
length density of lines of zeros of reduces as . We demonstrate
that the network loses energy directly into scalar and gauge radiation. These
results support a recent claim that particle production, and not gravitational
radiation, is the dominant energy loss mechanism for cosmic strings. This means
that cosmic strings in Grand Unified Theories are severely constrained by high
energy cosmic ray fluxes: either they are ruled out, or an implausibly small

Quantum effects after decoherence in a quenched phase transition
We study a quantum mechanical toy model that mimics some features of a
quenched phase transition. Both by virtue of a time-dependent Hamiltonian or by
changing the temperature of the bath we are able to show that even after
classicalization has been reached, the system may display quantum behaviour
again. We explain this behaviour in terms of simple non-linear analysis and
estimate relevant time scales that match the results of numerical simulations
of the master-equation. This opens new possibilities both in the study of
quantum effects in non-equilibrium phase transitions and in general
time-dependent problems where quantum effects may be relevant even after

The length distribution of vortex strings in U(1) equilibrium scalar field theory
We characterize the statistical length distribution of vortex strings by
studying the non-perturbative thermodynamics of scalar U(1) field theory in 3D.
All parameters characterizing the length distributions exhibit critical
behavior at and we measure their associated critical exponents. Moreover
we show that vortex strings are generally self-seeking at finite temperature
and that there exists a natural separation between long strings and small loops

Vortex String Formation in a 3D U(1) Temperature Quench
We report the first large scale numerical study of the dynamics of the second
order phase transition of a U(1) theory in three spatial
dimensions. The transition is induced by a time-dependent temperature drop in
the heat bath to which the fields are coupled. We present a detailed account of
the dynamics of the fields and vortex string formation as a function of the
quench rate. The results are found in good agreement to the theory of defect

Structure-Activity Relationship for the Oxadiazole Class of Antibiotics
The structure-activity relationship (SAR) for the newly discovered oxadiazole class of antibiotics is described with evaluation of 120 derivatives of the lead structure. This class of antibiotics was discovered by in silico docking and scoring against the crystal structure of a penicillin-binding protein. They impair cell-wall biosynthesis and exhibit activities against the Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant and linezolid-resistant S. aureus. 5-(1H-Indol-5-yl)-3-(4-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy)phenyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole (antibiotic 75b) was efficacious in a mouse model of MRSA infection, exhibiting a long half-life, a high volume of distribution, and low clearance. This antibiotic is bactericidal and is orally bioavailable in mice. This class of antibiotics holds great promise in recourse against infections by MRSA.Fil: Spink, Edward. Origin and Epidemiological History of HIV-1 CRF14_BG

progression. This study aimed to identify the origin of CRF14_BG and reconstruct its epidemiological history based on new
isolates from Portugal.Methodology/Principal Findings: C2V3C3 env gene sequences were obtained from 62 samples collected in 1993–1998
from Portuguese HIV-1 patients. Full-length genomic sequences were obtained from three patients. Viral subtypes, diversity,
divergence rate and positive selection were investigated by phylogenetic analysis. The molecular structure of the genomes
was determined by bootscanning. A relaxed molecular clock model was used to date the origin of CRF14_BG. Geno2pheno
was used to predict viral tropism. Subtype B was the most prevalent subtype (45 sequences; 73%) followed by CRF14_BG (8;
13%), G (4; 6%), F1 (2; 3%), C (2; 3%) and CRF02_AG (1; 2%). Three CRF14_BG sequences were derived from 1993 samples.
Near full-length genomic sequences were strongly related to the CRF14_BG isolates from Spain. Genetic diversity of the
Portuguese isolates was significantly higher than the Spanish isolates (0.044 vs 0.014, P,0.0001). The mean date of origin of
the CRF14_BG cluster was estimated to be 1992 (range, 1989 and 1996) based on the subtype G genomic region and 1989
(range, 1984–1993) based on the subtype B genomic region. Most CRF14_BG strains (78.9%) were predicted to be CXCR4.
Finally, up to five amino acids were under selective pressure in subtype B V3 loop whereas only one was found in the
CRF14_BG cluster.Conclusions: CRF14_BG emerged in Portugal in the early 1990 s soon after the beginning of the HIV-1 epidemics, spread to
Spain in late 1990 s as a consequence of IVDUs migration and then to the rest of Europe. CXCR4 tropism is a general
characteristic of this CRF that may have been selected for by escape from neutralizing antibody response
