The impact of reduced credit availability on corporate investment : an analysis of portuguese non-financial corporations
The recent slowdown in bank lending may be amplifying the downturn of the Portuguese economy. A crucial question is to understand whether the decline in credit growth is associated with the supply or with the demand side of the market. The goal of this MSc thesis is twofold. Firstly, I want to understand how the Portuguese firms are dependent on external borrowing and the contribution of bank lending to fulfill the financing needs of the economy. Then, I attempt to measure the effects of disturbances in the bank lending channel on the real economy and for this purpose I analyze how corporate investment reacts to increases in firms’ financing costs. I show that the economy relies heavily on external capital. Further, using microdata on firms’ balance sheets and credit default swaps on Portuguese government debt to instrument shocks to the credit supply, I find some evidence that more financially constrained firms contract more their investment expenditures. Finally, I conclude by stating the importance of a stable and robust banking system for the recovery of the economy
Implementation of linear network coding over a flexible emulator
This dissertation has the main objective of study and implement network coding (NC) techniques in a flexible emulator, programmed in a language that allows the coexistence of entities running parallel code, in order to emulate each node independently.
The dissertation starts with the study of NC’s concept and with the characterization of the different type of coding methods, with a focus on linear network coding (LNC).
. A flexible Java emulator (named Net Genius) was developed, which not only allows numerous topologies of networks, but also different types of coding. In addition, the emulator allows to emulate the networks in two different modes: with a distributed network or with a centralized network. In order to present the differences between the LNC approach and the traditional approach used in packet networks (based in routing tables), the emulator allows the user to choose between these two types of approach, assessing the impact of having network coding over user-defined networks.
When implementing LNC, the concept of generations of packets was introduced in order to avoid combining packets from different sources. Leveraging on this, the transfer matrix at each node is calculated based on the coded packets and not based on the information stored in each node. In addition to this, a mechanism to code packets at the source was implemented, as well as a mechanism to introduce errors in the connection links. This allowed to emulate networks with different link error probabilities, in order to assess the resilience of the different approaches to the presence of failures.
The motivational factors of college students to engage in a physical activity program
Physical activity is considered an excellent
option to achieve an optimum health condition. However,
college students are usually linked to a sedentary life style,
compromising health and life quality. Previous studies
stated that men are usually linked to exercise due to challenge
and fitness, while women look for appearance and
stress management
The Logic of the Method of Agent-Based Simulation in the Social Sciences: Empirical and Intentional Adequacy of Computer Programs
The classical theory of computation does not represent an adequate model of reality for simulation in the social sciences. The aim of this paper is to construct a methodological perspective that is able to conciliate the formal and empirical logic of program verification in computer science, with the interpretative and multiparadigmatic logic of the social sciences. We attempt to evaluate whether social simulation implies an additional perspective about the way one can understand the concepts of program and computation. We demonstrate that the logic of social simulation implies at least two distinct types of program verifications that reflect an epistemological distinction in the kind of knowledge one can have about programs. Computer programs seem to possess a causal capability (Fetzer, 1999) and an intentional capability that scientific theories seem not to possess. This distinction is associated with two types of program verification, which we call empirical and intentional verification. We demonstrate, by this means, that computational phenomena are also intentional phenomena, and that such is particularly manifest in agent-based social simulation. Ascertaining the credibility of results in social simulation requires a focus on the identification of a new category of knowledge we can have about computer programs. This knowledge should be considered an outcome of an experimental exercise, albeit not empirical, acquired within a context of limited consensus. The perspective of intentional computation seems to be the only one possible to reflect the multiparadigmatic character of social science in terms of agent-based computational social science. We contribute, additionally, to the clarification of several questions that are found in the methodological perspectives of the discipline, such as the computational nature, the logic of program scalability, and the multiparadigmatic character of agent-based simulation in the social sciences.Computer and Social Sciences, Agent-Based Simulation, Intentional Computation, Program Verification, Intentional Verification, Scientific Knowledge
Since 2008, the international demand for agricultural land highlighted land grabs as a new phenomenon in the context of international relations as a result of the combination of food, energy and financial crises. In particular, in South America land grabs prove to be particularly relevant for the understanding of economic, social and political dynamics in the sub-region by the complexity with which it manifests, by the actors and motivations involved and the debate associated with its expansion. The discussion on the impacts of land grabs is visible at the level of the opposition between the concepts of "sovereignty land" and "land governance". Based on the analysis of this confrontation, this dissertation aims to understand the impacts of land grabs at the level of international integration of South American countries. In particular, it aims to understand if the expansion of land grabs in South America constitutes as an element of autonomy or dependence at the level of international integration of South American countries
Molecular characterization and functional analysis of ORF P1192R from African swine fever virus
Tese de Doutoramento em Ciências Veterinárias. Especialidade de Ciências Biológicas e BiomédicasAfrican swine fever virus (ASFV) is a nucleo-cytoplasmic large DNA arbovirus and the
single member of the family Asfarviridae. It infects soft ticks of the genus Ornithodoros as
well as all members of the family Suidae, representing a global threat for pig husbandry for
which there is currently no effective vaccine or treatment. Since the ASFV viral cycle is
mainly cytoplasmic, it has been found/predicted to code for many components of the
replicative and transcriptional machineries. Of these, and based in sequence homologies, a
putative type II DNA topoisomerase-coding ORF (P1192R) was identified in the ASFV
genome. DNA topoisomerases are enzymes that modulate the topological state of DNA
molecules. They are ubiquitous and essential, participating in processes such as DNA
replication, recombination and repair and also in transcription. Since ASFV has a large linear
genome, with 170 to 190 kbp depending on the isolate, containing terminal inverted repeats
and covalently closed ends, a type II topoisomerase may be indispensable for viral replication
and/or transcriptional events. The main objectives of this work were to deepen the study on
ORF P1192R and determine if it indeed codes for a type II DNA topoisomerase and, if so, to
characterize its activity. Bioinformatics and phylogenetic analyses showed that ORF P1192R
is highly conserved among the fourteen ASFV isolates analyzed and, although its amino acid
sequence clearly diverges from other type II topoisomerases, the structural organization is
preserved and conserved motifs and domains essential for activity are present. Transient
expression of GFP-pP1192R in COS-7 cells revealed an exclusively cytoplasmic distribution
of the protein, which remained unaltered by treatment with leptomycin B. Using Vero cells or
swine macrophages infected with ASFV isolate Ba71V or L60, respectively, expression of
pP1192R was observed in the late phase of infection, co-localizing with the viral factories,
where the bulk of viral replication and transcription occurs. Heterologous expression of
pP1192R in Saccharomyces cerevisiae demonstrated that it functionally complements a top2
thermo-sensitive mutation and that it exhibits ATP-dependent decatenation activity. The
purified recombinant pP1192R was found to efficiently decatenate kDNA and to processively
relax supercoiled plasmid DNA, which are characteristics of a type II topoisomerase. The
optimal requirements in terms of pH, temperature and salt, divalent ions and ATP
concentrations for pP1192R activity in vitro were determined and its sensitivity to a panel of
topoisomerase poisons and inhibitors was tested. Our results indicate that P1192R may be a
target for studying, and possibly controlling, ASFV transcription and replication.RESUMO - O vírus da peste suína africana (VPSA) é um arbovírus icosaédrico núcleo-citoplasmático
Contudo, a grande maioria do ciclo infeccioso
integridade genómica e consequentemente a viabilidade celular. Todas as topoisomerases
heterólogo, purificação da proteína recombinante e caracterização in vitro da sua actividade;
proteínas do núcleo.
Neste organismo, a utilização
Do Divorce Law Reforms Matter for Divorce Rates - Evidence from Portugal
The effect of divorce law reforms on divorce rates in the United States and elsewhere has generated a controversy in the law and economics literature. In this article, we study the contribution of divorce law reforms for the evolution of divorce rates in Portugal over the last 40 years. We focus on the reforms of divorce law in the 1970s and in the 1990s as well as socioeconomic factors as determinants of the divorce rate. We find that the introduction of a modern divorce law in the 1970s had a significant effect on the divorce rate, but the changes of the 1990s that effectively implemented a generalized no-fault regime had no statistically significant impact. Our observations suggest that the reforms in the 1990s were likely the response of the legislature to growing divorce rates rather than the cause
Information technologies for pain management
Millions of people around the world suffer from pain, acute or chronic and this raises the
importance of its screening, assessment and treatment. The importance of pain is attested by
the fact that it is considered the fifth vital sign for indicating basic bodily functions, health
and quality of life, together with the four other vital signs: blood pressure, body
temperature, pulse rate and respiratory rate. However, while these four signals represent an
objective physical parameter, the occurrence of pain expresses an emotional status that
happens inside the mind of each individual and therefore, is highly subjective that makes
difficult its management and evaluation. For this reason, the self-report of pain is considered
the most accurate pain assessment method wherein patients should be asked to periodically
rate their pain severity and related symptoms. Thus, in the last years computerised systems
based on mobile and web technologies are becoming increasingly used to enable patients to
report their pain which lead to the development of electronic pain diaries (ED). This approach
may provide to health care professionals (HCP) and patients the ability to interact with the
system anywhere and at anytime thoroughly changes the coordinates of time and place and
offers invaluable opportunities to the healthcare delivery. However, most of these systems
were designed to interact directly to patients without presence of a healthcare professional
or without evidence of reliability and accuracy. In fact, the observation of the existing
systems revealed lack of integration with mobile devices, limited use of web-based interfaces
and reduced interaction with patients in terms of obtaining and viewing information. In
addition, the reliability and accuracy of computerised systems for pain management are
rarely proved or their effects on HCP and patients outcomes remain understudied.
This thesis is focused on technology for pain management and aims to propose a monitoring
system which includes ubiquitous interfaces specifically oriented to either patients or HCP
using mobile devices and Internet so as to allow decisions based on the knowledge obtained
from the analysis of the collected data. With the interoperability and cloud computing
technologies in mind this system uses web services (WS) to manage data which are stored in a
Personal Health Record (PHR).
A Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) was implemented so as to determine the effectiveness
of the proposed computerised monitoring system. The six weeks RCT evidenced the
advantages provided by the ubiquitous access to HCP and patients so as to they were able to
interact with the system anywhere and at anytime using WS to send and receive data. In
addition, the collected data were stored in a PHR which offers integrity and security as well
as permanent on line accessibility to both patients and HCP. The study evidenced not only
that the majority of participants recommend the system, but also that they recognize it
suitability for pain management without the requirement of advanced skills or experienced users. Furthermore, the system enabled the definition and management of patient-oriented
treatments with reduced therapist time. The study also revealed that the guidance of HCP at
the beginning of the monitoring is crucial to patients' satisfaction and experience stemming
from the usage of the system as evidenced by the high correlation between the
recommendation of the application, and it suitability to improve pain management and to
provide medical information. There were no significant differences regarding to
improvements in the quality of pain treatment between intervention group and control group.
Based on the data collected during the RCT a clinical decision support system (CDSS) was
developed so as to offer capabilities of tailored alarms, reports, and clinical guidance. This
CDSS, called Patient Oriented Method of Pain Evaluation System (POMPES), is based on the
combination of several statistical models (one-way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis and Tukey-Kramer)
with an imputation model based on linear regression. This system resulted in fully accuracy
related to decisions suggested by the system compared with the medical diagnosis, and
therefore, revealed it suitability to manage the pain. At last, based on the aerospace systems
capability to deal with different complex data sources with varied complexities and
accuracies, an innovative model was proposed. This model is characterized by a qualitative
analysis stemming from the data fusion method combined with a quantitative model based on
the comparison of the standard deviation together with the values of mathematical
expectations. This model aimed to compare the effects of technological and pen-and-paper
systems when applied to different dimension of pain, such as: pain intensity, anxiety,
catastrophizing, depression, disability and interference. It was observed that pen-and-paper
and technology produced equivalent effects in anxiety, depression, interference and pain
intensity. On the contrary, technology evidenced favourable effects in terms of
catastrophizing and disability. The proposed method revealed to be suitable, intelligible, easy
to implement and low time and resources consuming. Further work is needed to evaluate the
proposed system to follow up participants for longer periods of time which includes a
complementary RCT encompassing patients with chronic pain symptoms. Finally, additional
studies should be addressed to determine the economic effects not only to patients but also
to the healthcare system
Real estate agents happiness! Entrepreneurial orientation counts?
Mestrado Bolonha em Ciências EmpresariaisIn a society increasingly with more everyday stress and mental illnesses, the study of
well-being becomes also increasingly relevant, and after Covid19 pandemic, in which
people stayed for long periods indoors, also stimulate these studies in association with
the real estate market.
This work aims to study real estate agents and whether two entrepreneurs traits, such as
Locus of Control and Individual Entrepreneurial Orientation are predictors and somehow
are related to well-being.
A quantitative methodology was adopted, with 213 answered surveys, of which 118 were
Portuguese and 95 Brazilians. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS (Statistical
Package for the Social Sciences) version 27 for Windows and Andrew F. Hayes' Macro
for Windows called PROCESS, v 4.0.
The study revealed that among the real estate agents, those who became part of the market
by force of opportunity possess more internal Locus of Control in comparison to those
who entered the market by force of necessity. Still on the first-mentioned, the study
verified that they had higher levels of well-being, opportunity recognition and individual
entrepreneurial orientation.
It was also observed that Internal Locus of Control is a predictor to the other constructs,
individual entrepreneurial orientation, capability to recognize opportunities and wellbeing, and Individual Entrepreneurial Orientation is also a predictor to Opportunity
Recognition, but does not affect well-being and does not demonstrate any influence
through moderation in the relation between Locus of Control and Well-Being or Locus
of Control with Opportunity Recognition.
portugueses e 95 brasileiros. A análise estatística foi realizada usando o SPSS (Statistical
Package for the Social Sciences) versão 27 para Windows e a Macro de Andrew F. Hayes
