    Polarization-Tailored Raman Frequency Conversion in Chiral Gas-Filled Hollow Core Photonic Crystal Fibers

    Broadband-tunable sources of circularly-polarized light are crucial in fields such as laser science, biomedicine and spectroscopy. Conventional sources rely on nonlinear wavelength conversion and polarization control using standard optical components, and are limited by the availability of suitably transparent crystals and glasses. Although gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber provides pressure-tunable dispersion, long well-controlled optical path-lengths, and high Raman conversion efficiency, it is unable to preserve circular polarization state, typically exhibiting weak linear birefringence. Here we report a revolutionary approach based on helically-twisted hollow-core photonic crystal fiber, which displays circular birefringence, thus robustly maintaining circular polarization state against external perturbations. This makes it possible to generate pure circularly-polarized Stokes and anti-Stokes signals by rotational Raman scattering in hydrogen. The polarization state of the frequency-shifted Raman bands can be continuously varied by tuning the gas pressure in the vicinity of the gain suppression point. The results pave the way to a new generation of compact and efficient fiber-based sources of broadband light with fully-controllable polarization state.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Performance analytics for regulation in retail water utilities: Guiding asset management by identifying peers and targets

    This research evaluates the performance of water supply utilities operating at the retail level in Portugal concerning asset management practices. The study’s main innovative feature is identifying peers and targets to guide improvements in the sector. Reliable data collected by the regulatory authority for water and waste services in Portugal (ERSAR) are employed to design two composite indicators reflecting different dimensions of asset management: operational conditions and management systems. Based on the Data Envelopment Analysis technique, the Benefit-of-the-Doubt model is employed in robust and conditional formulations. The role of the context on utilities’ performance is also investigated. The results show that the direct management model is unfavourable concerning developing structured management systems, whilst urban environments favour managerial advancement. Rural and semi-urban environments favour “good” operational results in infrastructures. The pool of peers obtained for each utility and the quantification of targets based on the observed achievements by those peers facilitates the search for industry best practices and promotes continuous improvement. Given the high heterogeneity in asset management performance within the sector, the utility-specific target-setting approach illustrated in this paper can support a regulatory policy review for determining more realistic goals

    The measurement of asset management performance of water companies

    This study explores asset management performance of Portuguese water supply companies operating in the bulk market. The focus of the analysis are the managerial practices and the condition of infrastructures. This assessment is based on the information conveyed by the indicators collected by the Portuguese water and waste services’ regulator authority (ERSAR) between 2016 and 2020. The main contribution of this research is to propose innovative methods to enhance the knowledge on asset management practices in the water sector. Two Benefit-of-the-Doubt (BoD) Composite Indicators are developed to highlight different aspects of asset management approaches. The first reflects organisations’ performance in maintaining their infrastructures at acceptable operational levels, and the other reveals their maturity in asset management practices. Robust and conditional approaches for estimating the BoD indicators are applied, allowing to obtain results that account for the effect of contextual variables on companies’ performance. Additionally, the performance of the companies is analysed over a 5-year period. The results show that there is significant room for improvement given the indicators’ values estimated in the benchmarking analysis. The type of management systems and areas of intervention (urban, semi-urban or rural) are factors that present significant impact in asset management performance. The analysis of trends in the evolution of performance over time revealed improvements both in the companies’ managerial practices and operational results

    Broadband-tunable LP01_{01} mode frequency shifting by Raman coherence waves in H2_2-filled hollow-core PCF

    When a laser pump beam of sufficient intensity is incident on a Raman-active medium such as hydrogen gas, a strong Stokes signal, red-shifted by the Raman transition frequency {\Omega}R_R, is generated. This is accompanied by the creation of a "coherence wave" of synchronized molecular oscillations with wavevector {\Delta}{\beta} determined by the optical dispersion. Within its lifetime, this coherence wave can be used to shift by {\Omega}R_R the frequency of a third "mixing" signal, provided phase-matching is satisfied, i.e., {\Delta}{\beta} is matched. Conventionally this can be arranged using non-collinear beams or higher-order waveguide modes. Here we report collinear phase-matched frequency shifting of an arbitrary mixing signal using only the fundamental LP01_{01} modes of a hydrogen-filled hollow-core PCF. This is made possible by the S-shaped dispersion curve that occurs around the pressure-tunable zero dispersion point. Phase-matched frequency shifting by 125 THz is possible from the UV to the near-IR. Long interaction lengths and tight modal confinement reduce the peak intensities required, allowing conversion efficiencies in excess of 70%. The system is of great interest in coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy and for wavelength-conversion of broadband laser sources.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figures, supplementary materia

    El presente documento se propone reconstruir el patrón de comportamiento de la inversión pública peruana entre 1900 y 1968, a partir de nuevas evidencias empíricas extraídas de los Balances y Cuentas Generales de la República que han permitido elaborar series estadísticas completas del gasto fiscal a lo largo de todo el período examinado. Al proceder de esta manera hemos buscado responder, entre otras, a las siguientes interrogantes: ¿Cuál fue el monto del gasto fiscal total destinado a realizar obras públicas durante los distintos gobiernos que tuvieron bajo su administración el aparato estatal? ¿Qué tipo de obras se ejecutaron y qué orden de prioridades revelaban nuestros gobernantes en sus decisiones de inversión? Y, finalmente, ¿qué grado de autonomía relativa mostró el Estado en su política de inversiones públicas en relación a las presiones ejercidas por los grupos de poder locales

    Characterisation, expression and ontogeny of interleukin-6 and its receptors in zebrafish (Danio rerio)

    10 páginas, 8 figuras, 2 tablasInterleukin-6 (IL-6) is one of the most pleiotropic cytokines due to its importance in both innate and adaptive immune responses and other physiological processes. In this study, we identified the zebrafish (Danio rerio) IL-6 homologue by investigating the synteny between the human (Homo sapiens), the fugu (Takifugu rubripes) and the zebrafish genome. Although zebrafish IL-6 showed a low sequence homology with other IL-6 sequences in other species, it presented a high structural similarity to human IL-6. We also analysed IL-6 expression in several different tissues, along with analysis of the expression of the genes that form the IL-6 receptor complex, IL-6R and gp130. After treatment with bacterial or viral stimuli, zebrafish IL-6 expression was modulated in a manner similar to that of other proinflammatory molecules, such as IL-1β and TNF-α. The expression of IL-6, IL-6R and gp130 was also studied during the ontogeny of zebrafish larvae using quantitative PCR and in situ hybridisation. Our results indicated that the transcripts were detected very early, increased during the first week of life and were predominantly expressed in the head, epidermis and neuromasts of the anterior and posterior lateral line system, suggesting their involvement in the normal development of these tissues.We want to thank the funding from the project CSD2007-00002 “Aquagenomics” of the program Consolider-Ingenio 2010 from the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación.     LEDGF/p75 TATA-less promoter is driven by the transcription factor Sp1.

    PSIP1 (PC4 and SFRS1 interacting protein 1) encodes two splice variants: lens epithelium-derived growth factor or p75 (LEDGF/p75) and p52. PSIP1 gene products were shown to be involved in transcriptional regulation, affecting a plethora of cellular processes, including cell proliferation, cell survival, and stress response. Furthermore, LEDGF/p75 has implications for various diseases and infections, including autoimmunity, leukemia, embryo development, psoriasis, and human immunodeficiency virus integration. Here, we reported the first characterization of the PSIP1 promoter. Using 5' RNA ligase-mediated rapid amplification of cDNA ends, we identified novel transcription start sites in different cell types. Using a luciferase reporter system, we identified regulatory elements controlling the expression of LEDGF/p75 and p52. These include (i) minimal promoters (-112/+59 and +609/+781) that drive the basal expression of LEDGF/p75 and of the shorter splice variant p52, respectively; (ii) a sequence (+319/+397) that may control the ratio of LEDGF/p75 expression to p52 expression; and (iii) a strong enhancer (-320/-207) implicated in the modulation of LEDGF/p75 transcriptional activity. Computational, biochemical, and genetic approaches enabled us to identify the transcription factor Sp1 as a key modulator of the PSIP1 promoter, controlling LEDGF/p75 transcription through two binding sites at -72/-64 and -46/-36. Overall, our results provide initial data concerning LEDGF/p75 promoter regulation, giving new insights to further understand its biological function and opening the door for new therapeutic strategies in which LEDGF/p75 is involved

    Aislamiento de cocaína y benzoilecgonina en muestras de orina por extracciones líquido-líquido y en fase sólida y confirmación por Cromatografía líquida de alta resolución (HPLC)

    El consumo ilícito de cocaína se ha incrementado extraordinariamente en los últimos años, por lo que resulta indispensable el desarrollo de metodologías seguras, rápidas y eficientes para su detección. En este trabajo se desarrollo una técnica de HPLC de fase reversa con detector de UV para identificar y cuantificar a la cocaína y la benzoilecgonina, con resultados satisfactorios en los parámetros del control de calidad.Se realizó un estudio de recobrado para el aislamiento de la cocaína y la benzoilecgonina en orina con extracciones liquido liquido y en fase sólida con tres tipos de columnas comerciales (Bond Elut Certify, Extrelut 3 y Supelclean LC-18). Las fracciones obtenidas con la extracción líquido-líquido resultaron muy contaminados, con porcentajes de recobrados bajos (45% y 28% para la cocaína y la benzoilecgonina, respectivamente. En las extracciones en fase sólida para la cocaína resultaron muy eficientes las columnas Supelclean LC-18 (87-102 %) y Extrelut 3 (70-102 %), mientras que para el aislamiento de la benzoilecgonina resultaron más eficiente las columnas Extrelut 3 (86-101 %) y Supelclean LC-18 (73-89%). Las columnas Bond Elut Certify resultaron poco eficientes para el aislamiento de la cocaína (53-79%) y con un recobrado aún mas bajo para su metabolito (2-21% %)
