The data recording component has an easily removed recording drum which rotates according to the downward force applied on the handle, and a stylus means for marking the drum along its height according to the penetration depth of probe into the soil

    Student lists are commercially available for purchase on the basis of ethnicity, affluence, religion, lifestyle, awkwardness, and even a perceived or predicted need for family planning services. This study seeks to provide an understanding of the commercial marketplace for student data and the interaction with privacy law. Over several years, Fordham CLIP reviewed publicly-available sources, made public records requests to educational institutions, and collected marketing materials received by high school students.     The Cytotoxic Effects of Trimethylpentane on Rat Renal Tissue

    The primary objective of the investigation was to determine the acute cytopathologic effects of 2,3,4 -trimethylpentane, a major constituent of gasoline, on renal tissue of the mature male rat. Three groups of 9 Fischer-344 rats each were administered trimethylpentane by gavage twice weekly for 7, 14, or 28 days at a concentration of 1.5 ml/kg body weight. The tissues were fixed by perfusion, and subsequently processed for scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Al though the manifestations of hydrocarbon toxicity were evident in all experimental tissues examined, the extent and magnitude of cellular lesions increased as the exposure period progressed. The only structural change detected within the glomerular complex was a significant increase in the number of microvilli associated with various branches of the podocytes. Cells of the proximal convoluted tubule were characterized by the presence of membrane -bound, PAS positive hyaline droplets. At focal points along segments P1 and P2 of the proximal tubule intact epithelial cells dissociated from the basal lamina, underwent necrosis, and subsequently collected along the length of the tubular lumen. The cellular debris concentrated at the corticomedullary junction. Tubules at the site were dilated focally and the epithelial lining was attenuated. Results of the study indicate that the manifestations of trimethylpentane toxicity among renal cells are associated with the proliferation of hyaline droplets

    Abundance of intrinsically unstructured proteins in P. falciparum and other apicomplexan parasite proteomes

    Preliminary sequence analysis of Plasmodium falciparum has shown that the proteome of this organism is enriched in intrinsically unstructured proteins (IUPs), which are either completely disordered or contain large disordered regions. IUPs have been characterized as a unique class of proteins that plays an important role in biology and disease. In this study, the IUP contents in the proteomes of apicomplexan parasites, especially the proteome of P. falciparum and its various life cycle stages, have been evaluated with DisEMBL-1.4. Compared with other proteomes, apicomplexan species are extremely abundant in proteins containing long disordered regions, and the IUP contents in mammalian Plasmodium species are higher than in most other apicomplexan parasites. The proteome of the P. falciparum sporozoite appears to be distinct from the other life cycle stages in having an even higher content of disordered proteins. The abundance of IUPs in the P. falciparum proteome correlates with its enrichment in repetitive sequences. The structural plasticity of IUPs, which allows promiscuous binding interactions, may favour parasite survival both by inhibiting the generation of effective high affinity antibody responses and by facilitating the interactions with host molecules necessary for attachment and invasion of host cells

    Linearized solutions of the Einstein equations within a Bondi-Sachs framework, and implications for boundary conditions in numerical simulations

    We linearize the Einstein equations when the metric is Bondi-Sachs, when the background is Schwarzschild or Minkowski, and when there is a matter source in the form of a thin shell whose density varies with time and angular position. By performing an eigenfunction decomposition, we reduce the problem to a system of linear ordinary differential equations which we are able to solve. The solutions are relevant to the characteristic formulation of numerical relativity: (a) as exact solutions against which computations of gravitational radiation can be compared; and (b) in formulating boundary conditions on the r=2Mr=2M Schwarzschild horizon.Comment: Revised following referee comment

    An interstellar precursor mission

    A mission out of the planetary system, with launch about the year 2000, could provide valuable scientific data as well as test some of the technology for a later mission to another star. Primary scientific objectives for the precursor mission concern characteristics of the heliopause, the interstellar medium, stellar distances (by parallax measurements), low energy cosmic rays, interplanetary gas distribution, and mass of the solar system. Secondary objectives include investigation of Pluto. Candidate science instruments are suggested. Individual spacecraft systems for the mission were considered, technology requirements and problem areas noted, and a number of recommendations made for technology study and advanced development. The most critical technology needs include attainment of 50-yr spacecraft lifetime and development of a long-life NEP system

    Magnetoconductivity of Hubbard bands induced in Silicon MOSFETs

    Sodium impurities are diffused electrically to the oxide-semiconductor interface of a silicon MOSFET to create an impurity band. At low temperature and at low electron density, the band is split into an upper and a lower sections under the influence of Coulomb interactions. We used magnetoconductivity measurements to provide evidence for the existence of Hubbard bands and determine the nature of the states in each band.Comment: In press in Physica

    Observations of the SW Sextantis star DW Ursae Majoris with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer

    We present an analysis of the first far-ultraviolet observations of the SW Sextantis-type cataclysmic variable DW Ursae Majoris, obtained in November 2001 with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer. The time-averaged spectrum of DW UMa shows a rich assortment of emission lines (plus some contamination from interstellar absorption lines including molecular hydrogen). Accretion disk model spectra do not provide an adequate fit to the far-ultraviolet spectrum of DW UMa. We constructed a light curve by summing far-ultraviolet spectra extracted in 60-sec bins; this shows a modulation on the orbital period, with a maximum near photometric phase 0.93 and a minimum half an orbit later. No other periodic variability was found in the light curve data. We also extracted spectra in bins spanning 0.1 in orbital phase; these show substantial variation in the profile shapes and velocity shifts of the emission lines during an orbital cycle of DW UMa. Finally, we discuss possible physical models that can qualitatively account for the observed far-ultraviolet behavior of DW UMa, in the context of recent observational evidence for the presence of a self-occulting disk in DW UMa and the possibility that the SW Sex stars may be the intermediate polars with the highest mass transfer rates and/or weakest magnetic fields.Comment: accepted by the Astronomical Journal; 36 pages, including 12 figures and 4 table

    Numerical relativity with characteristic evolution, using six angular patches

    The characteristic approach to numerical relativity is a useful tool in evolving gravitational systems. In the past this has been implemented using two patches of stereographic angular coordinates. In other applications, a six-patch angular coordinate system has proved effective. Here we investigate the use of a six-patch system in characteristic numerical relativity, by comparing an existing two-patch implementation (using second-order finite differencing throughout) with a new six-patch implementation (using either second- or fourth-order finite differencing for the angular derivatives). We compare these different codes by monitoring the Einstein constraint equations, numerically evaluated independently from the evolution. We find that, compared to the (second-order) two-patch code at equivalent resolutions, the errors of the second-order six-patch code are smaller by a factor of about 2, and the errors of the fourth-order six-patch code are smaller by a factor of nearly 50.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, submitted to CQG (special NFNR issue
