Fetal heterotaxy with tricuspid atresia, pulmonary atresia, and isomerism of the right atrial appendages at 22 weeks.

We report the accurate prenatal diagnosis at 22 weeks gestation of right atrial isomerism in association with tricuspid atresia. Several distinctive sonographic features of isomerism of the right atrial appendages were present in this fetus: complex cardiac abnormality, ventriculoarterial discordance, juxtaposition of the aorta and the inferior vena cava to the right side, pulmonary atresia, and anomalous pulmonary venous return to the morphological right atrium. Tricuspid atresia, which is an extremely rare lesion within heterotaxy spectrum disorders, was present. Postnatal investigations confirmed all prenatally diagnosed abnormalities, with additional findings of pulmonary atresia with discontinuous pulmonary arteries and bilateral arterial ducts, asplenia, and bilateral eparterial bronchi. To our knowledge, tricuspid atresia in the setting of isomerism of the right atrial appendages has not previously been diagnosed or reported prenatally. Because of the complexity of cardiac lesions that may be present in cases of atrial isomerism, these disorders should be considered even if sonographic findings are uncommon or atypical

Magnetic resonance at 41 meV and charge dynamics in YBa_2Cu_3O_6.95

We report an Eliashberg analysis of the electron dynamics in YBa_2Cu_3O_6.95. The magnetic resonance at 41 meV couples to charge carriers and defines the characteristic shape in energy of the scattering rate \tau^{-1}(T,\omega) which allows us to construct the charge-spin spectral density I^2\chi(\omega,T) at temperature T. The T dependence of the weight under the resonance peak in I^2\chi(\omega,T) agrees with experiment as does that of the London penetration depth and of the microwave conductivity. Als, at T=0 condensation energy, the fractional oscillator strength in the condensate, and the ratio of gap to critical temperature agree well with the data.Comment: 7 Pages, 3 Figures, accepted for publication in Europhysics Letter

Water resource problems of energy projects in the Colorado River Basin

    Get PDF
The successful development of western coal and oil shale deposits is dependent, to a significant degree, on the availability of adequate water supplies. EQL is involved in a study of the aggregate effects of various energy activities in the upper Colorado River Basin on downstream water quantity and quality. These activities will tend to reduce the available water in the river, and could increase its salinity, which is already so high as to interfere with downstream domestic and agricultural use

Our knowledge of transport, fates and effects of water pollutants has increased considerably in the last decade and further advances of knowledge are expected. Management of ocean discharges should be directly related to our present understanding of ocean processes, but flexible enough to be adjusted in the l1ght of new research results; in addition, alternate disposal processes to air or land should be evaluated. The ocean disposal option should have technical parity with land and air disposal options

A key to the mammals, other than bats and monkeys, believed to be found in the Brazilian Amazon Region is presented. This key uses a minimum number of technical terms, and is intended to be used by persons untrained in mammalogy as well as by mammalogists. It includes 107 species: 17 marsupials, 16 edentates, 1 lagomorph, 41 rodents, 2 cetaceans, 20 carnivores, 2 sirenians, 1 perissodactyl and 7 artiodactyls. It should be of special use in identifying mammals collected in faunal surveys and in epidemiological studies

Disinfection Efficiency and Relative Toxicity of Chlorine and Bromine Chloride: A Pilot Plant Study in an Estuarine Environment

    Get PDF
The present study was conducted by the Virginia Interagency Task Force on Chlorine to compare the relative merits of bromine chloride and chlorine as wastewater disinfectants. Operational and disinfection qualities of both halogens and the relative toxicities of the treated effluents were studied in a pilot scale system. Three specific objectives were pursued; 1. an evaluation of the relative disinfection capabilities of the two halogens; 2. an assessment of the toxicity of each effluent stream to juvenile spot; and 3. an analysis of the halogenated organics produced in treated and disinfected effluent. The results of studies directed at the first two objectives are the subject of this report. Results of chemical analyses of halogenated organics in treated and disinfected sewage effluents will be the subject of a subsequent report

A Sampling Study of the Blue Point Woods, Poweshiek, Co., Iowa

    Get PDF
During the fall of 1953 a study was made of the Blue Point Woods, an area located approximately nine miles southeast of Grinnell, in Section 14 of Washing ton Township, Poweshiek County, Iowa. The Blue Point forest is clearly divided into three stands, two of which are approximately the same age and older than the last. These stands are oriented in a north-south direction. From north to south, respectively, we find an old, grazed stand; a younger, cut-over stand; and a very old, undisturbed stand. The old, grazed stand is fairly open with little in the way of herbaceous and frutescent layers other than blue grass (Poa pratensis) and Ribes spp. The younger, cut-over stand is densely populated with trees, shrubs, and herbs. The undisturbed stand is made up of many large trees forming a dense canopy. The herbaceous and frutescent layers are also well developed and include many transgressives and tree seedlings. The investigation occurred so late in the year that no attempt was made to sample the herbaceous flora
