Advertizing, concentration and profitability in Malaysian manufacturing revisited: A simultaneous equation approach

    Get PDF
The original Structure-Conduct-Performance (SCP) paradigm that postulates a unidirectional relationship between concentration, advertizing and profitability had been used as the theoretical framework for many empirical works in industrial organizations before the mid seventies. Thereafter, doubts had begun to surface over the unidirectional postulate and there is new theory suggesting simultaneous interdependence. Unfortunately, not only are Malaysian studies in this area few and far between (exhaustive literature review yields only three published studies namely, Gan and Tham, 1977; Gan, 1978; and Rugayah, 1992), they also failed to incorporate the more recent theoretical development on the simultaneity of effects. This paper revisits the SCP paradigm as applied to the relationship among concentration, advertizing and profitability by conducting an empirical test that allows for simultaneous interdependence among variables. A set of three equations was estimated using three stage least squares (3SLS). The results provide considerable support to the feed forward and feedback effects between the three variables. Advertizing intensity exerts a significant influence on profit and concentration in the industry and there exists a feedback effect running from concentration to advertizing intensity. This finding suggests that advertizing does have an anti-competitive impact on the industry and therefore has a direct bearing on competition policy analysis

Exploring relationship between perceived motivation factors and job satisfaction

    Get PDF
A number of studies that have focused on perceived motivation factors towards employees’ job satisfaction have been conducted. However, very few relate these concepts from knowledge workers’ perspective. This paper set out to have an empirical look at the relationship between motivation factors and employees’ job satisfaction. The survey had been conducted by distributing questionnaires to employees describes as “knowledge workers” by the manager. 50 respondents participated in this study to yield a response rate of 84.75%. The results showed that only two out three motivator factors (recognition and achievement) have significant relationship between with intrinsic satisfaction and only two out of three hygiene factor (security and working condition) have significant relationship with extrinsic job satisfaction. Thus, this signifies the importance of both motivator and hygiene factors in enhancing job satisfaction among employees especially among knowledge worker

Effect of ph and ionic strength on permeate flux during separation of lactobacillus plantarum by using hollow fiber crossflow microfiltration

    Get PDF
Microfiltration is a separation process used for cell harvesting in downstream process. Current research focused on the factor affecting the process of cell separation from fermentation broth to be recycled into the fermenter. The efficiency of solute separation by microfiltration can be influenced by solution pH and ionic strength. The objectives of this research is to study the effects of pH solution which is pH 4.5, 5.5, 6.5, 7.5, 8.5 and ionic strength on permeate flux of separation of Lactobacillus plantarum bacteria. For this research, the 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 M of salt concentration are also used. At pH 8.5, permeate flux is the highest due to the electrostatic repulsion between the Lactobacillus plantarum bacteria and the surface of the membrane. The lowest permeate flux is at 1.0 M of ionic strength due to compaction of membrane and results in reduction of effective permeability. As conclusion, flux can be affected by pH solution and addition of salt. Increase in pH solution resulted in increase in permeate flux and addition of salt decreases permeate flux

Study on the ability of black soldier fly larvae for reducing the house fly eggs in poultry manure

    Get PDF
Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) are a good source of protein for aquaculture, animal feed, pet and human nutrition. Larvae have a healthy appetite and can be used to make household waste compost and residual agricultural. For previous study [1], observed that the BSFL can be grown in a variety of organic waste stream including pig manure, kitchen waste, fruits and vegetables, and given to the fish. In addition, the larvae benefit from the use of natural resources to overcome the problem of life cycle of widespread flies in the poultry farm openly. Therefore, it is important to note that the poultry farms release many particles into the air that endanger human health and the environment

This study is about creating Digital Elevation Model (OEM) in field measurement. The study was carried out at Mosque of University Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Kota Kinabalu. TIle overall objective was to create the OEM by using the clinometer device. The immediate objectives were to measure the height of slope at UMS and to know the accuracy of clinometer in order to create OEM. There are 36 points which were marked at the hill and each of the points was measured by clinometer to detennioe the height of slope. Besides, the Global Positioning System (GPS) was using to know the location of the point. After the reading of slope is taken, the data in degree unit is converted into height to make a contour map by using Surfer 8

Background: Life events are believed to be associated with the development of depression. The extended years of living will invariably subject the elderly people to more life events. Thus, they are more vulnerable to suffer from depression. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of depression among the elderly residents in Kelantan and to elucidate the association between life events and the elderly depression. Methods: This is a cross sectional study, which was conducted in Kelantan from April 2016 until December 2017. Stratified random sampling method was used to recruit 422 elderly people aged 60 years and above. The Malay Geriatric Depression Scale-15 (M-GDS-15) was utilized to identify the presence of depression, while life events occurring in the past twelve months were evaluated using the Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS). Data were analyzed using simple and multiple logistic regressions. Results: The prevalence of depression among elderly in Kelantan is 22%. Being older elders (aged more than 75) and staying in traditional house were found to have positive association with depression, while being married and performing exercise were identified as the protective factors against depression. The significant life events that contributed to elderly depression were death of spouse (95% CI =1.45, 26.34, p=0.014), changes of social activities (95%CI: 2.24,6.91, p<0.001), serious illness orinjuries (95% CI =1.15,7.84, p=0.025), changes of life habits (95%CI: 1.50,4.73, p=0.001), changes of sleeping habits (95% CI: 1.38,4.70,p=0.003), changes of lifestyle (95%CI: 1.32,4.61,p=0.005) and changes of numbers of family get-together (95% CI: 1.32,4.07,p=0.004). Conclusion: The prevalence of depression among elderly in Kelantan is high. The changes in social relationship, activities and lifestyles are significantly related with elderly depression. These life events are inevitable in elderly. Therefore, there is a need to detect early signs of depression especially in those who faced certain amounts of recent life events. Social interventions such as promoting healthy and active lifestyle among elderly also warrant attention
