    Thermal shape fluctuation effects in the description of hot nuclei

    The behavior of several nuclear properties with temperature is analyzed within the framework of the Finite Temperature Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (FTHFB) theory with the Gogny force and large configuration spaces. Thermal shape fluctuations in the quadrupole degree of freedom, around the mean field solution, are taken into account with the Landau prescription. As representative examples the nuclei 164^{164}Er, 152^{152}Dy and 192^{192}Hg are studied. Numerical results for the superfluid to normal and deformed to spherical shape transitions are presented. We found a substantial effect of the fluctuations on the average value of several observables. In particular, we get a decrease in the critical temperature (TcT_c) for the shape transition as compared with the plain FTHFB prediction as well as a washing out of the shape transition signatures. The new values of TcT_c are closer to the ones found in Strutinsky calculations and with the Pairing Plus Quadrupole model Hamiltonian.Comment: 17 pages, 8 Figure

    Observation of strongly deformed shapes in 154-152Dy nuclei at medium temperatures

    The gamma-decay of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) built on excited states of 154-152Dy nuclei is studied. The selection of GDR decay from high spin states leading to specific exit channels was made possible by triggering on high spin isomers. The deduced energy splitting of the GDR implies large deformations (\beta\ congruent-to 0.4-0.5). The resonance widths of the components are comparable to those of the GDR built on the ground state indicating small shape fluctuations

    GDR γ-ray decay in 156Dy∗ from regions selected on temperature and angular momentum

    The strength distribution of the GDR built on highly excited states in a restricted temperature domain in Dy-156 and Dy-155 nuclei has been deduced by subtraction of gamma-ray spectra obtained for the decay of Dy-154* and Dy-156* from regions selected on angular momentum. The resulting difference spectra have been analyzed within the statistical model. The results show a large deformation (\beta\ similar to 0.51 +/- 0.29 and 0.35 +/- 0.14) for the angular-momentum regions with [J] similar to 32 ()overbarhatTapproximateto1.8+/−0.2MeVand[J]similarto46() over bar h at T approximate to 1.8 +/- 0.2 MeV and [J] similar to 46 () over bar h at T approximate to 1.7 +/- 0.2 MeV respectively, in satisfactory agreement with calculations performed in the framework of Landau theory of shape transitions and statistical fluctuations. The deduced centroid energies are in agreement with the systematics of the GDR built on the ground state. The width of the GDR shows a systematic increase with increasing temperature

    Choosing in-cylinder surfaces is complex. A well-chosen surface has low friction and wear. Conversely, poor oversight often leads to premature failure through wear and scuffing. Typically cylinder bore surfaces are selected experientially. This paper demonstrates the use of Atomic Force Microscopy in LFM mode, characterising typical cylinder bore materials and coatings. The approach uses integrated LFM with continuum contact mechanics. It evaluates the real contact area and effective elastic modulus of the surface, including the effect of any reactive surface film. Surface energy and shear strength, as well as the coefficient of friction in nanoscale interactions are also determined. These properties are measured for 6 cylinder bore materials, including for composite Nickel-Silicon Carbide and DLC, used for high performance engines
