Lasing oscillation in a three-dimensional photonic crystal nanocavity with a complete bandgap
We demonstrate lasing oscillation in a three-dimensional photonic crystal
nanocavity. The laser is realized by coupling a cavity mode, which is localized
in a complete photonic bandgap and exhibits the highest quality factor of
~38,500, with high-quality semiconductor quantum dots. We show a systematic
change in the laser characteristics, including the threshold and the
spontaneous emission coupling factor by controlling the crystal size, which
consequently changes the strength of photon confinement in the third dimension.
This opens up many interesting possibilities for realizing future ultimate
light sources and three-dimensional integrated photonic circuits and for more
fundamental studies of physics in the field of cavity quantum electrodynamics.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure
Organ accumulation and carcinogenicity of highly dispersed multi-walled carbon nanotubes administered intravenously in transgenic rasH2 mice
Purpose: Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been known to enter the circulatory system via the lungs from inhalation exposure; however, its carcinogenicity and subsequent accumulation in other organs have not been adequately reported in the literature. Moreover, the safety of MWCNTs as a biomaterial has remained a matter of debate, particularly when the material enters the circulatory system. To address these problems, we used carcinogenic rasH2 transgenic mice to intravenously administer highly dispersed MWCNTs and to evaluate their carcinogenicity and accumulation in the organs. Methods: Two types of MWCNTs (thin-and thick-MWCNTs) were intravenously administered at a high dose (approximately 0.7 mg per kg body weight) and low dose (approximately 0.07 mg per kg body weight). Results: MWCNTs showed pancreatic accumulation in 3.2% of mice administered with MWCNTs, but there was no accumulation in other organs. In addition, there was no significant difference in the incidence of tumor among the four MWCNTs-administered groups compared to the vehicle group without MWCNTs administration. Blood tests revealed elevated levels in mean red blood cell volume and mean red blood cell hemoglobin level for the MWCNTs-administered group, in addition to an increase in eotaxin. Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that the use of current technology to sufficiently disperse MWCNTs resulted in minimal organ accumulation with no evidence of carcinogenicity.ArticleINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF NANOMEDICINE. 14:6465-6480 (2019)journal articl

セイヨウオトギリソウは、発熱性疾患の解熱、利尿促進、創傷治癒など様々な疾患に効く薬草として、古くから使用されている。最近、セイヨウオトギリソウは軽度のうつ症状を改善する薬草として着目され、うつ症状改善の分子機構の解析も精力的に行われている。一方、創傷治癒促進効果の機構については不明な点が多く、また分子機序を調べた研究が非常に少ない。本研究では、セイヨウオトギリソウ成分をエタノールで抽出し、ヒト線維芽細胞を用いたin vitro 創傷治癒モデル系における影響を調査した。セイヨウオトギリソウ抽出物は、2%ウシ胎児血清を含む培養条件では、4 μg/mL以下の低濃度においてヒト線維芽細胞の創傷部位とみなされる隙間空間への移動を促進した。6-8 μg/mLでは濃度依存的に細胞の移動促進効果が失われ、10 μg/mLでは、細胞の移動を阻害した。1%ウシ胎児血清を含む培養条件では、セイヨウオトギリソウの阻害効果の方が強く、移動促進のピークは観察されなかった。また、線維芽細胞の創傷部位への移動に関与するフィブリン溶解活性、およびウロキナーゼ型プラスミノーゲン活性化因子およびプラスミノーゲン活性化因子阻害因子-1の発現は、4-6 μg/mLのセイヨウオトギリソウ抽出物添加により促進されたが、10 μg/mLでは促進効果が消失した。以上の結果より、セイヨウオトギリソウ抽出物には、in vitro モデル系における創傷治癒を促進する成分と阻害する成分の両者を含むことが示唆された
Fucoxanthin, a Marine Carotenoid Present in Brown Seaweeds and Diatoms: Metabolism and Bioactivities Relevant to Human Health
The marine carotenoid fucoxanthin can be found in marine brown seaweeds, the macroalgae, and diatoms, the microalgae, and has remarkable biological properties. Numerous studies have shown that fucoxanthin has considerable potential and promising applications in human health. In this article, we review the current available scientific literature regarding the metabolism, safety, and bioactivities of fucoxanthin, including its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, anti-obese, antidiabetic, antiangiogenic and antimalarial activities, and its protective effects on the liver, blood vessels of the brain, bones, skin, and eyes. Although some studies have shown the bioavailability of fucoxanthin in brown seaweeds to be low in humans, many studies have suggested that a dietary combination of fucoxanthin and edible oil or lipid could increase the absorption rate of fucoxanthin, and thus it might be a promising marine drug
Time-resolved serial femtosecond crystallography reveals early structural changes in channelrhodopsin

Light absorption causes retinal chromophore isomerization and subsequent protein conformational changes visualized as optically distinguished intermediates, coupled with channel opening and closing. However, the detailed molecular events underlying channel gating remain unknown. We performed time-resolved serial femtosecond crystallographic analyses of ChR by using an X-ray free electron laser, which revealed conformational changes following photoactivation. The isomerized retinal adopts a twisted conformation and shifts toward the putative internal proton donor residues, consequently inducing an outward shift of TM3, as well as a local deformation in TM7. These early conformational changes in the pore-forming helices should be the triggers that lead to opening of the ion conducting pore
A Comprehensive Sequence and Disease Correlation Analyses for the C-Terminal Region of CagA Protein of Helicobacter pylori
Chronic Helicobacter pylori infection is known to be associated with the development of peptic ulcer, gastric cancer and gastric lymphoma. Currently, the bacterial factors of H. pylori are reported to be important in the development of gastroduodenal diseases. CagA protein, encoded by the cagA, is the best studied virulence factor of H. pylori. The pathogenic CagA protein contains a highly polymorphic Glu-Pro-Ile-Tyr-Ala (EPIYA) repeat region in the C-terminal. This repeat region is reported to be involved in the pathogenesis of gastroduodenal diseases. The segments containing EPIYA motifs have been designated as segments A, B, C, and D; however the classification and disease relation are still unclear. This study used 560 unique CagA sequences containing 1,796 EPIYA motifs collected from public resources, including 274 Western and 286 East Asian strains with clinical data obtained from 433 entries. Fifteen types of EPIYA or EPIYA-like sequences are defined. In addition to four previously reported major segment types, several minor segment types (e.g., segment B′, B′′) and more than 30 sequence types (e.g., ABC, ABD) were defined using our classification method. We confirm that the sequences from Western and East Asian strains contain segment C and D, respectively. We also confirm that strains with two EPIYA segment C have a greater chance of developing gastric cancer than those with one segment C. Our results shed light on the relationships between the types of CagAs, the country of origin of each sequence type, and the frequency of gastric disease
