    Blood mobilization from the liver of the anaesthetized dog

    The abdominal circulation contains a high proportion of the total blood volume and this can change either passively in response to changes in vascular distending pressure or actively (termed a capacitance response) to changes in sympathetic nervous activity. The liver is the largest abdominal organ and this study was designed to evaluate its potential contribution to overall vascular capacitance and compliance. In chloralose anaesthetized dogs, the liver was vascularly isolated, perfused through the portal vein and hepatic artery at either constant pressures or constant flows and drained from the hepatic veins at constant pressure. Changes in vascular resistance were assessed from changes in inflow pressures or flows and hepatic blood volume was determined by differences between net inflow and outflow. During constant flow perfusion the change in hepatic volume (capacitance change) in response to supramaximal stimulation of sympathetic nerves at 16 Hz was (mean ± S.E.M.) -2·40 ± 0·61 ml (kg body weight)-1. This response was not significantly different during constant pressure perfusion. The changes in portal venous and hepatic arterial pressures during stimulation at constant flow perfusion were +0·67 ± 0·13 and +4·92 ± 0·67 kPa, respectively. The compliance of the liver, assessed as the change in volume to a change in hepatic venous pressure, was +5·44 ± 0·18 ml kg-1 kPa-1. These results indicate that the liver has a major capacitance role, comparable to that of the canine spleen and, in addition, is highly compliant. No evidence was found to suggest that a sphincter on the hepatic outflow exists. Assuming similar responses occur in humans, who do not possess a large contractile spleen, the liver would be the most important controllable blood reservoir in the body

    Transport policy and health inequalities: a health impact assessment of Edinburgh's transport policy

    Health impact assessment (HIA) can be used to examine the relationships between inequalities and health. This HIA of Edinburgh's transport policy demonstrates how HIA can examine how different transport policies can affect different population groupings to varying degrees. In this case, Edinburgh's economy is based on tourism, financial services and Government bodies. These need a good transport infrastructure, which maintains a vibrant city centre. A transport policy that promotes walking, cycling and public transport supports this and is also good for health. The HIA suggested that greater spend on public transport and supporting sustainable modes of transport was beneficial to health, and offered scope to reduce inequalities. This message was understood by the City Council and influenced the development of the city's transport and land-use strategies. The paper discusses how HIA can influence public policy

    The Strategic Exploitation of Limited Information and Opportunity in Networked Markets

    This paper studies the effect of constraining interactions within a market. A model is analysed in which boundedly rational agents trade with and gather information from their neighbours within a trade network. It is demonstrated that a trader’s ability to profit and to identify the equilibrium price is positively correlated with its degree of connectivity within the market. Where traders differ in their number of potential trading partners, well-connected traders are found to benefit from aggressive trading behaviour.Where information propagation is constrained by the topology of the trade network, connectedness affects the nature of the strategies employed

    The calibration of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory using uniformly distributed radioactive sources

    The production and analysis of distributed sources of 24Na and 222Rn in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) are described. These unique sources provided accurate calibrations of the response to neutrons, produced through photodisintegration of the deuterons in the heavy water target, and to low energy betas and gammas. The application of these sources in determining the neutron detection efficiency and response of the 3He proportional counter array, and the characteristics of background Cherenkov light from trace amounts of natural radioactivity is described.Comment: 24 pages, 13 figure

    Habitable Zones and UV Habitable Zones around Host Stars

    Ultraviolet radiation is a double-edged sword to life. If it is too strong, the terrestrial biological systems will be damaged. And if it is too weak, the synthesis of many biochemical compounds can not go along. We try to obtain the continuous ultraviolet habitable zones, and compare the ultraviolet habitable zones with the habitable zones of host stars. Using the boundary ultraviolet radiation of ultraviolet habitable zone, we calculate the ultraviolet habitable zones of host stars with masses from 0.08 to 4.00 \mo. For the host stars with effective temperatures lower than 4,600 K, the ultraviolet habitable zones are closer than the habitable zones. For the host stars with effective temperatures higher than 7,137 K, the ultraviolet habitable zones are farther than the habitable zones. For hot subdwarf as a host star, the distance of the ultraviolet habitable zone is about ten times more than that of the habitable zone, which is not suitable for life existence.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Spatio-temporal genetic tagging of a cosmopolitan planktivorous shark provides insight to gene flow, temporal variation and site-specific re-encounters

    Migratory movements in response to seasonal resources often influence population structure and dynamics. Yet in mobile marine predators, population genetic consequences of such repetitious behaviour remain inaccessible without comprehensive sampling strategies. Temporal genetic sampling of seasonally recurring aggregations of planktivorous basking sharks, Cetorhinus maximus, in the Northeast Atlantic (NEA) affords an opportunity to resolve individual re-encounters at key sites with population connectivity and patterns of relatedness. Genetic tagging (19 microsatellites) revealed 18% of re-sampled individuals in the NEA demonstrated inter/multi-annual site-specific re-encounters. High genetic connectivity and migration between aggregation sites indicate the Irish Sea as an important movement corridor, with a contemporary effective population estimate (Ne) of 382 (CI = 241–830). We contrast the prevailing view of high gene flow across oceanic regions with evidence of population structure within the NEA, with early-season sharks off southwest Ireland possibly representing genetically distinct migrants. Finally, we found basking sharks surfacing together in the NEA are on average more related than expected by chance, suggesting a genetic consequence of, or a potential mechanism maintaining, site-specific re-encounters. Long-term temporal genetic monitoring is paramount in determining future viability of cosmopolitan marine species, identifying genetic units for conservation management, and for understanding aggregation structure and dynamics

    Modulational Instability in Equations of KdV Type

    It is a matter of experience that nonlinear waves in dispersive media, propagating primarily in one direction, may appear periodic in small space and time scales, but their characteristics --- amplitude, phase, wave number, etc. --- slowly vary in large space and time scales. In the 1970's, Whitham developed an asymptotic (WKB) method to study the effects of small "modulations" on nonlinear periodic wave trains. Since then, there has been a great deal of work aiming at rigorously justifying the predictions from Whitham's formal theory. We discuss recent advances in the mathematical understanding of the dynamics, in particular, the instability of slowly modulated wave trains for nonlinear dispersive equations of KdV type.Comment: 40 pages.
