    Attitude Control of an Underactuated Planar Multibody System Using Momentum Preserving Internal Torques

    In the last few years interest in versatile reconfigurable arrays for space applications has been growing and several concepts tailored for different mission needs have been proposed. Nevertheless, a compelling application that justifies their higher cost and complexity with respect to conventional systems has not yet been found. Here a novel approach to the design of an Attitude Control System (ACS) for small reconfigurable spacecraft is proposed. It shall exploit momentum-preserving internal torques generated by the modules of the multibody array rotating relative to each other. The goal is to achieve better performance in efficiency, accuracy and robustness with respect to state-of-the-art ACSs, which is a bottleneck of small spacecraft technology. This paper investigates the characteristic behaviour of a planar multibody array whose attitude is controlled using internal joint torques. To do this, relevant reorientation trajectories are shown and discussed. With respect to previous work in the field, optimal attitude control trajectories that take into account module impingement are discussed and the dynamics of momentum-preserving manoeuvres is explained in detail from both physical and mathematical points of view. The results demonstrate that further development of the concept is desirable

Methods: We analysed cross-sectional data from 33,983 adults (≥40 years), recruited between Jan 2, 2003 and Dec 26, 2016, in 41 sites (34 countries) from the Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease (BOLD) study. We estimated the prevalence of chronic cough for each site accounting for sampling design. To identify risk factors, we conducted multivariable logistic regression analysis within each site and then pooled estimates using random-effects meta-analysis. We also calculated the population attributable risk (PAR) associated with each of the identifed risk factors. Findings: The prevalence of chronic cough varied from 3% in India (rural Pune) to 24% in the United States of America (Lexington,KY). Chronic cough was more common among females, both current and passive smokers, those working in a dusty job, those with a history of tuberculosis, those who were obese, those with a low level of education and those with hypertension or airflow limitation. The most influential risk factors were current smoking and working in a dusty job. Interpretation: Our findings suggested that the prevalence of chronic cough varies widely across sites in different world regions.     Association of respiratory symptoms and lung function with occupation in the multinational Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease (BOLD) study

    Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease has been associated with exposures in the workplace. We aimed to assess the association of respiratory symptoms and lung function with occupation in the Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease study. Methods We analysed cross-sectional data from 28 823 adults (≥40 years) in 34 countries. We considered 11 occupations and grouped them by likelihood of exposure to organic dusts, inorganic dusts and fumes. The association of chronic cough, chronic phlegm, wheeze, dyspnoea, forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1)/FVC with occupation was assessed, per study site, using multivariable regression. These estimates were then meta-analysed. Sensitivity analyses explored differences between sexes and gross national income. Results Overall, working in settings with potentially high exposure to dusts or fumes was associated with respiratory symptoms but not lung function differences. The most common occupation was farming. Compared to people not working in any of the 11 considered occupations, those who were farmers for ≥20 years were more likely to have chronic cough (OR 1.52, 95% CI 1.19–1.94), wheeze (OR 1.37, 95% CI 1.16–1.63) and dyspnoea (OR 1.83, 95% CI 1.53–2.20), but not lower FVC (β=0.02 L, 95% CI −0.02–0.06 L) or lower FEV1/FVC (β=0.04%, 95% CI −0.49–0.58%). Some findings differed by sex and gross national income. Conclusion At a population level, the occupational exposures considered in this study do not appear to be major determinants of differences in lung function, although they are associated with more respiratory symptoms. Because not all work settings were included in this study, respiratory surveillance should still be encouraged among high-risk dusty and fume job workers, especially in low- and middle-income countries.publishedVersio

    FDI in hot labour markets: The implications of the war for talent

    This paper highlights an inherent contradiction that exists within investment promotion activities in rich countries. Since the financial crisis, many inward investment agencies have shifted their activities from job creation per se to seeking to attract investment in high-tech activities. Such knowledge-intensive sectors are engaged in what has become referred to as “the war for talent”, so locations need to understand their value proposition to firms, especially where labour is tight. This paper explores the implications of this, in terms of the impact on employment and earnings of high skilled labour. We show that, because skill shortages already exist in many of these sectors, seeking to attract inward investment in these sectors simply causes the earnings of such workers to be bid up, and employment in the incumbent sector to fall. We highlight the over-riding importance that firms place on the availability of skilled labour when determining locations, and how policies which promote labour market flexibility, particularly through investment in skills to address skill shortages, can significantly mitigate the adverse effects, which tend to be more keenly felt in poorer regions of Europe where skilled labour is in even shorter supply

    Cohort Profile: Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease (BOLD) study

    The Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease (BOLD) study was established to assess the prevalence of chronic airflow obstruction, a key characteristic of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and its risk factors in adults (≥40 years) from general populations across the world. The baseline study was conducted between 2003 and 2016, in 41 sites across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, the Caribbean and Oceania, and collected high-quality pre- and post-bronchodilator spirometry from 28 828 participants. The follow-up study was conducted between 2019 and 2021, in 18 sites across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Caribbean. At baseline, there were in these sites 12 502 participants with high-quality spirometry. A total of 6452 were followed up, with 5936 completing the study core questionnaire. Of these, 4044 also provided high-quality pre- and post-bronchodilator spirometry. On both occasions, the core questionnaire covered information on respiratory symptoms, doctor diagnoses, health care use, medication use and ealth status, as well as potential risk factors. Information on occupation, environmental exposures and diet was also collected

    Background!#!Standing can be understood as a motor process in addition to the stereotypes of movement described by Janda. Atypical stress during standing leads to overstraining of myofascial structures and to pain. The search for a specific examination possibility with the prospect of individual therapy recommendations was the reason for the development of this score.!##!Methodology!#!In this study 80 healthy volunteers were examined for their stance stability by means of established as well as proportionally newly described test procedures. The equally weighted results were combined into a score and its standard values were determined.!##!Results!#!For the age group 18-44 years old the norm is the completion of 10 out of the total of 13 individual tasks. For the age group 45-59 years old, according to current measurements 8 out of 13 achieved points are the norm. In the age group from the age of 60 years onwards, no reliable statements can so far be made.!##!Discussion!#!The age group up to 44 years old provided reliable data. The age group above that shows at least a clear trend. The existing tests and scores are increasingly concerned with the risk of falling and the dexterity in movements and complex tasks. The status as a motor stereotype has not yet been described. After an examination using the Jena standing stability (JESS) score it is possible to make statements about individual therapy priorities.!##!Conclusion!#!The JESS score is a practicable test to verify the standing stereotype. The extension of the norm group by including further study participants will decide on a stabilization or modification of the current results. The testing of further cohorts will show to what extent these items are sensitive to changes caused by training methods and whether the score can also be used to congruently map clinical changes

    Sequential Support: 3D Printing Dissolvable Support Material for Time-Dependent Mechanisms

    In this paper, we propose a different perspective on the use of support material: rather than printing support structures for overhangs, our idea is to make use of its transient nature, i.e. the fact that it can be dissolved when placed in a solvent, such as water. This enables a range of new use cases, such as quickly dissolving and replacing parts of a prototype during design iteration, printing temporary assembly labels directly on the object that leave no marks when dissolved, and creating time-dependent mechanisms, such as fading in parts of an image in a shadow art piece or releasing relaxing scents from a 3D printed structure sequentially overnight. Since we use regular support material (PVA), our approach works on consumer 3D printers without any modifications. To facilitate the design of objects that leverage dissolvable support, we built a custom 3D editor plugin that includes a simulation showing how support material dissolves over time. In our evaluation, our simulation predicted geometries that are statistically similar to the example shapes within 10% error across all samples
