Effect of quality assessment on cultivar performance in timothy variety testing in Finland
Significant differences in quality parameters among varieties were recorded for yields of both the first and second cuts. Differences in D-values reflected the differences in earliness of varieties and differences in protein content reflected differences in the yield of a particular cut.
Quality assessment in cultivar trials would motivate breeders to enhance their efforts in quality improvement
Positive pion absorption on 3He using modern trinucleon wave functions
We study pion absorption on 3He employing trinucleon wave functions
calculated from modern realistic NN interactions (Paris, CD Bonn). Even though
the use of the new wave functions leads to a significant improvement over older
calculations with regard to both cross section and polarization data, there are
hints that polarization data with quasifree kinematics cannot be described by
just two-nucleon absorption mechanisms.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure
Evidence of Cooper pair pumping with combined flux and voltage control
We have experimentally demonstrated pumping of Cooper pairs in a
single-island mesoscopic structure. The island was connected to leads through
SQUID (Superconducting Quantum Interference Device) loops. Synchronized flux
and voltage signals were applied whereby the Josephson energies of the SQUIDs
and the gate charge were tuned adiabatically. From the current-voltage
characteristics one can see that the pumped current increases in 1e steps which
is due to quasiparticle poisoning on the measurement time scale, but we argue
that the transport of charge is due to Cooper pairs.Comment: 4 page
Ear Emergence of Different Grass Species under Finnish Growing Conditions
Timothy is the most commonly cultivated grass species in Finland. Swards cultivated for silage of hay are of pure timothy or timothy is the dominant species of the mixture. Successful timing of harvesting of the primary growth is very critical in Northern latitudes where the stand develops very rapidly at daylengths of above 18 hours with a daily mean temperature close to 20 °C. The primary growth has to be harvested within a very short period to obtain a yield of high and uniform quality. Short harvesting periods require high capacity harvest machinery which lead to high costs. If it would be possible to prolong the harvesting over a longer period of time, it would decrease the risk of bad weather conditions and reduce machine costs through better utilization of harvesting capacity. Sowing different grass species makes it possible to extend the harvesting period. The aim of this study was to investigate timing of ear emergence of different grass species in comparison with timothy. The suitable harvesting time for silage in Finland is closely related to ear emergence of the stand
Calibration and High Fidelity Measurement of a Quantum Photonic Chip
Integrated quantum photonic circuits are becoming increasingly complex.
Accurate calibration of device parameters and detailed characterization of the
prepared quantum states are critically important for future progress. Here we
report on an effective experimental calibration method based on Bayesian
updating and Markov chain Monte Carlo integration. We use this calibration
technique to characterize a two qubit chip and extract the reflectivities of
its directional couplers. An average quantum state tomography fidelity of
93.79+/-1.05% against the four Bell states is achieved. Furthermore, comparing
the measured density matrices against a model using the non-ideal device
parameters derived from the calibration we achieve an average fidelity of
97.57+/-0.96%. This pinpoints non-ideality of chip parameters as a major factor
in the decrease of Bell state fidelity. We also perform quantum state
tomography for Bell states while continuously varying photon distinguishability
and find excellent agreement with theory
Non-Industrial, Smallholder, Small-Scale and Family Forestry: What's in a Name?
This issue represents the launch of a new forestry journal, published under the auspices of IUFRO Working Unit 3.08.00 Small-scale Forestry and sponsored by Joensuu University (Finland) and The University of Queensland (Australia). This journal has come into being from deliberations over a number of years by the members of Working Unit 3.08. The choice of journal title and fields of interest involved much debate, creating a focus for resolving issues concerning the nature and scope of the journal, intended targeted audience and intended contributors. IUFRO Working Unit 3.08.00 - Small-scale Forestry - is dedicated to the dissemination of information on research problems, continuing research efforts and research results related to the management of small-scale non-industrial private forest woodlots. The group was formed in 1986 at the IUFRO XVIII World Congress held in Ljubljana, Yugoslavia. Since that time, the group has been highly active and has staged a series of well-attended and memorable annual symposia at diverse locations. This diversity is well illustrated by the groups most recent meetings being held in tropical northern Australia in summer in 2000 followed by next meeting in snow-covered Finland in late winter 2001. A strong sense of camaraderie has developed amongst members, hence there was strong sentiment in favour of the title Journal of Small-scale Forestry. It is apparent that small-scale forestry means different things in different countries, hence it was necessary to select a name which would give a clear indication on the scope of the journal for forest professionals and academia. Since choice of a journal title drives the perception of the journal to potential contributors and readers, this became a matter of serious debate amongst members of the small committee formed at the symposium in Joensuu in Finland in 2001 to provide directions for the proposed journal. This paper reports on some of the issues which were canvassed in arriving at a title and focus for the journal, summarises results of a survey of delegates at the Joensuu symposium of opinions about the desirable role and nature of the journal, and indicates the priority areas in which papers are sought
Zwischen Pflicht und Selbstbestimmung:das Musical Elisabeth und die Sissi-Filmtrilogie im Lichte der Jungschen Literaturpsychologie
Abstract .
Analyysi tukeutuu jungilaiseen kirjallisuuspsykologiaan, jossa satuja ja myyttejä tarkastellaan kuvauksina sankarin matkasta psyykkisenä prosessina, jonka päämääränä on individuaatio eli omaksi itseksi tuleminen.
Itsen ilmentymistä tarkastellaan arkkityyppiin liittyvien symboleiden kautta.
Electronic cooling of a submicron-sized metallic beam
We demonstrate electronic cooling of a suspended AuPd island using
superconductor-insulator-normal metal tunnel junctions. This was achieved by
developing a simple fabrication method for reliably releasing narrow submicron
sized metal beams. The process is based on reactive ion etching and uses a
conducting substrate to avoid charge-up damage and is compatible with e.g.
conventional e-beam lithography, shadow-angle metal deposition and oxide tunnel
junctions. The devices function well and exhibit clear cooling; up to factor of
two at sub-kelvin temperatures.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
