An Updated List of Gandhara Palettes and Their Utility for the Study of Hybridity

    Get PDF
The Gandhara palettes have been studied in the field of Gandharan art, particularly for their connection to the broader school and its cultural trajectories. A complete repository of the palettes is useful for the study of the artefacts and their relation to Gandharan art. The database seeks to produce a new depository for the palettes as well as more ambiguous artefacts which may have fulfilled similar roles. The dataset described in this paper provides other information such as bibliography, material and estimated chronology which allows for statistical analysis or unpacking correlations of types and chronologies

Providing a Comparative Geo-referenced Database for Religious Artefacts in Ai Khanoum and Taxila’s Sirkap Mound

The cities of Taxila in Pakistan, and Ai Khanoum in Afghanistan, are emblematic of the post-Alexandrian and post-Mauryan political landscapes of the broader South and Central Asian regions. While both have been thoroughly excavated, there has been little comparison of their material culture. Through the construction of repositories with artefacts of religious nature for both cities and through illustrating maps for the two cities with the distribution of variables such as material or item categorization can serve as a springboard for studies of hybridity in the ancient world. In addition, I hope to build on larger depositories of said resources for other scholars to use in the future and to have a common resource of artefact databases to build upon. The databases can provide research with templates for the two cities and a corpus of their artefacts for future research

REDESIGN AND PERFORMANCE OF SERVICE NETWORKS: A SYSTEMS DYNAMICS APPROACH

    Get PDF
Continuous innovation of service networks is important for the success of modern service based economies. Over the last years, several analysis and design methods have emerged for engineering SOA applications. However, none of these methods can effectively cope with the increased level of complexity and dynamics that come with service network innovation. In addition, and even more problematic, existing methods fall largely short in assisting application designers and business managers in evaluating and predicting the impact of design decisions on the performance of the service-enabled applications and the end to end business processes at the network level. In this paper we use system dynamics simulation to predict the impact of design decisions for software services and human-operated services on service network performance in the automobile industry. We show that a single design decision at the software level influences 10 out of 12 performance indicators at the firm and the inter-organizational business network level

A model transformation for increasing value in service networks through intangible value exchanges

    Get PDF
Abstract-One of the main goals in service science is to find efficient ways to analyze and increment the value in a service network. The approach we propose in this paper is to increase the agility of the system in such a way that the network and the underlying business processes are able to spontaneously react to changes in the requirements or in the environment. This is done by making extensive use of knowledge transfer and intangible interactions among network participants. The final outcome is a transformation and analysis methodology that may be applied to a wide variety of service networks with the aim of finding possible reconfigurations for increasing customer satisfaction, reducing transaction risks, and therefore increasing the overall value of the network

Carotid ultrasound findings as a predictor of long-term survival after abdominal aortic aneurysm repair: a 14-year prospective study

AbstractPurposeSeveral factors have been related to long-term survival after open abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair. The effect of carotid stenosis on outcome has not yet been examined. We performed an open prospective study to evaluate the prognostic significance of carotid stenosis on long-term survival of patients who had undergone elective operative repair of AAA.MethodsTwo hundred eight patients who underwent elective open AAA repair in our department between March 1987 and December 2001 were included in the study. All patients were evaluated preoperatively with color duplex ultrasound (US) scanning of the carotid arteries, and were followed up with clinical examination and carotid duplex US scanning 1 month after the operation and every 6 months thereafter. Median duration of follow-up was 50 months (range, 5-181 months). Cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, as well as all causes of mortality, were recorded and analyzed with regard to traditional risk factors and carotid US findings.ResultsTwenty-seven fatal and 46 nonfatal cardiovascular events were recorded. Both univariate and multivariate analysis showed that carotid stenosis 50% or greater and echolucent plaque were significantly associated with cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. Carotid stenosis was a stronger predictor of cardiovascular death than was ankle/brachial index. Age, hypercholesterolemia, coronary artery disease, and diabetes mellitus were also associated with higher mortality and morbidity from cardiovascular causes.ConclusionPatients electively operated on for AAA repair and with stenosis 50% or greater and echolucent plaque at duplex US scanning are at significantly increased risk for cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. Carotid US can therefore be used to select a subgroup of patients with AAA who might benefit from medical intervention, including antiplatelet and lipid-lowering agents

High-dimensional single cell mass cytometry analysis of the murine hematopoietic system reveals signatures induced by ageing and physiological pathogen challenges

Background: Immune ageing is a result of repetitive microbial challenges along with cell intrinsic or systemic changes occurring during ageing. Mice under 'specific-pathogen-free' (SPF) conditions are frequently used to assess immune ageing in long-term experiments. However, physiological pathogenic challenges are reduced in SPF mice. The question arises to what extent murine experiments performed under SPF conditions are suited to analyze immune ageing in mice and serve as models for human immune ageing. Our previous comparisons of same aged mice with different microbial exposures, unambiguously identified distinct clusters of immune cells characteristic for numerous previous pathogen encounters in particular in pet shop mice. Results: We here performed single cell mass cytometry assessing splenic as secondary and bone marrow as primary lymphoid organ-derived leukocytes isolated from young versus aged SPF mice in order to delineate alterations of the murine hematopoietic system induced during ageing. We then compared immune clusters from young and aged SPF mice to pet shop mice in order to delineate alterations of the murine hematopoietic system induced by physiological pathogenic challenges and those caused by cell intrinsic or systemic changes during ageing. Notably, distinct immune signatures were similarly altered in both pet shop and aged SPF mice in comparison to young SPF mice, including increased frequencies of memory T lymphocytes, effector-cytokine producing T cells, plasma cells and mature NK cells. However, elevated frequencies of CD4(+) T cells, total NK cells, granulocytes, pDCs, cDCs and decreased frequencies of naive B cells were specifically identified only in pet shop mice. In aged SPF mice specifically the frequencies of splenic IgM(+) plasma cells, CD8(+) T cells and CD4(+) CD25(+) Treg were increased as compared to pet shop mice and young mice. Conclusions: Our study dissects firstly how ageing impacts both innate and adaptive immune cells in primary and secondary lymphoid organs. Secondly, it partly distinguishes murine intrinsic immune ageing alterations from those induced by physiological pathogen challenges highlighting the importance of designing mouse models for their use in preclinical research including vaccines and immunotherapies

Combined Endovascular/Surgical Management of a Ruptured Para-Anastomotic Aneurysm of the Left Common Iliac Artery#

A 75-year old man presented with signs and symptoms of acute abdomen and a clinical picture of hypovolemic shock. An emergency CT scan revealed a ruptured para-anastomotic left common iliac artery aneurysm. The patient had undergone an elective abdominal aortic aneurysm repair operation and placement of an aortoiliac bifurcated graft 10 years before. Para-anastomotic aneurysms had developed in all 3 (aortic and the 2 iliac) anastomosis. As the patient was highrisk, a combined endovascular/surgical approach was undertaken. The patient was discharged 4 days later
