Galaxy Zoo: Disentangling the Environmental Dependence of Morphology and Colour
We analyze the environmental dependence of galaxy morphology and colour with
two-point clustering statistics, using data from the Galaxy Zoo, the largest
sample of visually classified morphologies yet compiled, extracted from the
Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We present two-point correlation functions of spiral
and early-type galaxies, and we quantify the correlation between morphology and
environment with marked correlation functions. These yield clear and precise
environmental trends across a wide range of scales, analogous to similar
measurements with galaxy colours, indicating that the Galaxy Zoo
classifications themselves are very precise. We measure morphology marked
correlation functions at fixed colour and find that they are relatively weak,
with the only residual correlation being that of red galaxies at small scales,
indicating a morphology gradient within haloes for red galaxies. At fixed
morphology, we find that the environmental dependence of colour remains strong,
and these correlations remain for fixed morphology \textit{and} luminosity. An
implication of this is that much of the morphology--density relation is due to
the relation between colour and density. Our results also have implications for
galaxy evolution: the morphological transformation of galaxies is usually
accompanied by a colour transformation, but not necessarily vice versa. A
spiral galaxy may move onto the red sequence of the colour-magnitude diagram
without quickly becoming an early-type. We analyze the significant population
of red spiral galaxies, and present evidence that they tend to be located in
moderately dense environments and are often satellite galaxies in the outskirts
of haloes. Finally, we combine our results to argue that central and satellite

Galaxy Zoo: The large-scale spin statistics of spiral galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
We re-examine the evidence for a violation of large-scale statistical
isotropy in the distribution of projected spin vectors of spiral galaxies. We
have a sample of spiral galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky
Survey, with their line of sight spin direction confidently classified by
members of the public through the online project Galaxy Zoo. After establishing
and correcting for a certain level of bias in our handedness results we find
the winding sense of the galaxies to be consistent with statistical isotropy.
In particular we find no significant dipole signal, and thus no evidence for
overall preferred handedness of the Universe. We compare this result to those
of other authors and conclude that these may also be affected and explained by

Timing and duration of mating and brooding periods of Atka mackerel (Pleurogrammus monopterygius) in the North Pacific Ocean
The timing and duration of the reproductive cycle of Atka mackerel (Pleurogrammus monopterygius) was validated by using observations from time-lapse video and data from
archival tags, and the start, peak, and end of spawning and hatching were determined from an incubation model with aged egg samples and empirical incubation times ranging from 44 days at a water temperature of 9.85°C to 100 days at 3.89°C. From June to July, males ceased diel vertical movements, aggregated in nesting colonies, and established territories.
Spawning began in late July, ended in mid-October, and peaked in early September. The male egg-brooding period that followed continued from late November to mid-January and duration was highly dependent on embryonic development as affected by ambient water temperature. Males exhibited brooding behavior for protracted periods at water depths from 23 to 117 m where average daily water temperatures ranged from 4.0° to 6.2°C. Knowledge about the timing
of the reproductive cycle provides a framework for conserving Atka mackerel populations and investigating
the physical and biological processes influencing recruitment
Hdelta-Selected Galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey I: The Catalog
[Abridged] We present here a new and homogeneous sample of 3340 galaxies
selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) based solely on the observed
strength of their Hdelta absorption line. These galaxies are commonly known as
``post-starburst'' or ``E+A'' galaxies, and the study of these galaxies has
been severely hampered by the lack of a large, statistical sample of such
galaxies. In this paper, we rectify this problem by selecting a sample of
galaxies which possess an absorption Hdelta equivalent width of EW(Hdelta_max)
- Delta EW(Hdelta_max) > 4A from 106682 galaxies in the SDSS. We have performed
extensive tests on our catalog including comparing different methodologies of
measuring the Hdelta absorption and studying the effects of stellar absorption,
dust extinction, emission-filling and measurement error. The measured abundance
of our Hdelta-selected (HDS) galaxies is 2.6 +/- 0.1% of all galaxies within a
volume-limited sample of 0.05<z<0.1 and M(r*)<-20.5, which is consistent with
previous studies of such galaxies in the literature. We find that only 25 of
our HDS galaxies in this volume-limited sample (3.5+/-0.7%) show no evidence
for OII and Halpha emission, thus indicating that true E+A (or k+a) galaxies
are extremely rare objects at low redshift, i.e., only 0.09+/-0.02% of all
galaxies in this volume-limited sample are true E+A galaxies. In contrast,
89+/-5% of our HDS galaxies in the volume-limited sample have significant
detections of the OII and Halpha emission lines. We find 27 galaxies in our
volume-limited HDS sample that possess no detectable OII emission, but do
however possess detectable Halpha emission. These galaxies may be dusty
star-forming galaxies. We provide the community with this new catalog of
Hdelta-selected galaxies to aid in the understanding of these galaxies.Comment: Submitted to PASJ. Catalog of galaxies available at

Temporal trend of opioid and nonopioid pain medications: results from a national in-home survey, 2001 to 2018.
INTRODUCTION: The opioid epidemic persists in the United States. The use of opioid medications is often assessed by claims data but potentially underestimated. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the temporal trend in the use of opioid and nonopioid pain medications from a national survey. METHODS: Using data from the 2001 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), we examined the current use of prescription analgesics in the past 30 days among 50,201 respondents aged 20 years or older. Joinpoint regressions were used to test statistically meaningful trends of opioid vs nonopioid analgesics. RESULTS: The mean percentage of people who had pain medications in the past 30 days was 6.4% (5.3%-7.1%) for opioid and 11.3% (9.0%-14.8%) for nonopioid analgesics. The availability of opioid and nonopioid prescriptions at home has remained stable, except for the slight decline of opioids among cancer-free patients in 2005 to 2018. The most frequently used opioid analgesic medications included hydrocodone/acetaminophen, tramadol, and hydrocodone. CONCLUSION: We uniquely measured the proportion of people who had opioid and nonopioid pain medications at home in the United States and supplemented the previous knowledge of prescription rates mainly obtained from claims data
The age-redshift relation for Luminous Red Galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
We present a detailed analysis of 17,852 quiescent, Luminous Red Galaxies
(LRGs) selected from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release Seven (DR7)
spanning a redshift range of 0.0 < z < 0.4. These galaxies are co-added into
four equal bins of velocity dispersion and luminosity to produce high
signal-to-noise spectra (>100A^{-1}), thus facilitating accurate measurements
of the standard Lick absorption-line indices. In particular, we have carefully
corrected and calibrated these indices onto the commonly used Lick/IDS system,
thus allowing us to compare these data with other measurements in the
literature, and derive realistic ages, metallicities ([Z/H]) and alpha-element
abundance ratios ([alpha/Fe]) for these galaxies using Simple Stellar
Population (SSP) models. We use these data to study the relationship of these
galaxy parameters with redshift, and find little evidence for evolution in
metallicity or alpha-elements (especially for our intermediate mass samples).
This demonstrates that our subsamples are consistent with pure passive evolving
(i.e. no chemical evolution) and represent a homogeneous population over this
redshift range. We also present the age-redshift relation for these LRGs and
clearly see a decrease in their age with redshift (5 Gyrs over the redshift
range studied here) which is fully consistent with the cosmological lookback
times in a concordance Lambda CDM universe. We also see that our most massive
sample of LRGs is the youngest compared to the lower mass galaxies. We provide
these data now to help future cosmological and galaxy evolution studies of
LRGs, and provide in the appendices of this paper the required methodology and
information to calibrate SDSS spectra onto the Lick/IDS system.Comment: 26 pages, with several appendices containing data. Accepted for

Galaxy Zoo 1 : Data Release of Morphological Classifications for nearly 900,000 galaxies
Morphology is a powerful indicator of a galaxy's dynamical and merger
history. It is strongly correlated with many physical parameters, including
mass, star formation history and the distribution of mass. The Galaxy Zoo
project collected simple morphological classifications of nearly 900,000
galaxies drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, contributed by hundreds of
thousands of volunteers. This large number of classifications allows us to
exclude classifier error, and measure the influence of subtle biases inherent
in morphological classification. This paper presents the data collected by the
project, alongside measures of classification accuracy and bias. The data are
now publicly available and full catalogues can be downloaded in electronic

Galaxy Zoo: Dust in Spirals
We investigate the effect of dust on spiral galaxies by measuring the
inclination-dependence of optical colours for 24,276 well-resolved SDSS
galaxies visually classified in Galaxy Zoo. We find clear trends of reddening
with inclination which imply a total extinction from face-on to edge-on of 0.7,
0.6, 0.5 and 0.4 magnitudes for the ugri passbands. We split the sample into
"bulgy" (early-type) and "disky" (late-type) spirals using the SDSS fracdeV (or
f_DeV) parameter and show that the average face-on colour of "bulgy" spirals is
redder than the average edge-on colour of "disky" spirals. This shows that the
observed optical colour of a spiral galaxy is determined almost equally by the
spiral type (via the bulge-disk ratio and stellar populations), and reddening
due to dust. We find that both luminosity and spiral type affect the total
amount of extinction, with "disky" spirals at M_r ~ -21.5 mags having the most
reddening. This decrease of reddening for the most luminous spirals has not
been observed before and may be related to their lower levels of recent star
formation. We compare our results with the latest dust attenuation models of
Tuffs et al. We find that the model reproduces the observed trends reasonably
well but overpredicts the amount of u-band attenuation in edge-on galaxies. We
end by discussing the effects of dust on large galaxy surveys and emphasize
that these effects will become important as we push to higher precision

Faint High Latitude Carbon Stars Discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: Methods and Initial Results
We report the discovery of 39 Faint High Latitude Carbon Stars (FHLCs) from
Sloan Digital Sky Survey commissioning data. The objects, each selected
photometrically and verified spectroscopically, range over 16.6 < r* < 20.0,
and show a diversity of temperatures as judged by both colors and NaD line
strengths. At the completion of the Sloan Survey, there will be many hundred
homogeneously selected and observed FHLCs in this sample. We present proper
motion measures for each object, indicating that the sample is a mixture of
extremely distant (>100 kpc) halo giant stars, useful for constraining halo
dynamics, plus members of the recently-recognized exotic class of very nearby
dwarf carbon (dC) stars. Motions, and thus dC classification, are inferred for
40-50 percent of the sample, depending on the level of statistical significance
invoked. The new list of dC stars presented here, although selected from only a
small fraction of the final SDSS, doubles the number of such objects found by
