Direct Strength Method for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Sections Under Localised Loading

The main objective of the thesis is the development of the Direct Strength Method (DSM) for the design of cold-formed steel sections under general localised loading. In order to calibrate the DSM equations, it is necessary to have three main input variables which are the buckling load, the yield load and the experimental data. The first objective of this research is the development of the Finite Strip Method (FSM) theory for analysis of thin-walled sections under localised loading with general end boundary conditions to determine the buckling load as described in Chapters 3 and 4 of the thesis. The theory is included in Version 2.0 of the THIN-WALL-2 program which can be used for analysing structural members under generalised loading conditions as described in Chapter 5. The second objective is the formulation of plastic mechanism models to estimate the yield load of thin-walled sections subjected to localised loading. In order to establish these models, observations are performed from experiments to ascertain the failure modes of structural members under localised loading with different cross-sections, load cases and flange fastening conditions. From the data, new simple plastic mechanism models are built-up based on the concept of the balance between the internal energy of the structural member and the external energy of the applied loads to estimate the yield load as described in Chapter 6. The third objective is collating the experimental data of thin-walled sections under localised loading. The data is collected from previous literature for different types of cross-sections: un-lipped plain-C, lipped plain-C, SupaCee and Dimond Hi-Span channel (DHS) sections subjected to all load cases. In addition, both flange fastened and unfastened conditions are assembled in the experimental database as described in Chapter 6. From these three input variables, the DSM design equations are proposed for structural members under general localised loading. The method is a consistent and simplified model generalised for all localised load cases. It includes both an inelastic reserve component as observed in testing and a yield load component. Also, a reliability analysis calibration is performed to validate the accuracy of the DSM predictions with the collected experimental data as described in Chapter 7

State of charge estimation for lithium-ion batteries connected in series using two sigma point Kalman filters

This paper proposes a method to estimate state of charge (SoC) for Lithium-ion battery pack (LIB) with series-connected cells. The cell’s model is represented by a second-order equivalent circuit model taking into account the measurement disturbances and the current sensor bias. By using two sigma point Kalman filters (SPKF), the SoC of cells in the pack is calculated by the sum of the pack’s average SoC estimated by the first SPKF and SoC differences estimated by the second SPKF. The advantage of this method is the SoC estimation algorithm performed only two times instead of times in each sampling time interval, so the computational burden is reduced. The test of the proposed SoC estimation algorithm for 7 samsung ICR18650 Lithium-ion battery cells connected in series is implemented in the continuous charge and discharge scenario in one hour time. The estimated SoCs of the cells in the pack are quite accurate, the 3-sigma criterion of estimated SoC error distributions is 0.5%

Incidences between points and generalized spheres over finite fields and related problems

Let Fq\mathbb{F}_q be a finite field of qq elements where qq is a large odd prime power and Q=a1x1c1+...+adxdcdFq[x1,...,xd]Q =a_1 x_1^{c_1}+...+a_dx_d^{c_d}\in \mathbb{F}_q[x_1,...,x_d], where 2ciN2\le c_i\le N, gcd(ci,q)=1\gcd(c_i,q)=1, and aiFqa_i\in \mathbb{F}_q for all 1id1\le i\le d. A QQ-sphere is a set of the form {xFqdQ(xb)=r}\lbrace x\in \mathbb{F}_q^d | Q(x-b)=r\rbrace, where bFqd,rFqb\in \mathbb{F}_q^d, r\in \mathbb{F}_q. We prove bounds on the number of incidences between a point set P\mathcal{P} and a QQ-sphere set S\mathcal{S}, denoted by I(P,S)I(\mathcal{P},\mathcal{S}), as the following. I(P,S)PSqqd/2PS.| I(\mathcal{P},\mathcal{S})-\frac{|\mathcal{P}||\mathcal{S}|}{q}|\le q^{d/2}\sqrt{|\mathcal{P}||\mathcal{S}|}. We prove this estimate by studying the spectra of directed graphs. We also give a version of this estimate over finite rings Zq\mathbb{Z}_q where qq is an odd integer. As a consequence of the above bounds, we give an estimate for the pinned distance problem. In Sections 44 and 55, we prove a bound on the number of incidences between a random point set and a random QQ-sphere set in Fqd\mathbb{F}_q^d. We also study the finite field analogues of some combinatorial geometry problems, namely, the number of generalized isosceles triangles, and the existence of a large subset without repeated generalized distances.Comment: to appear in Forum Mat

APPLICATION OF PHYSICAL EXERCISES WITH MUSIC TO DEVELOP THE GENERAL PHYSICAL FITNESS OF FOUR-GRADED STUDENTS IN HO CHI MINH CITY, VIETNAM

The purpose of this study is to select and apply physical exercises with music to enhance the general physical health of grade 4 students at a public Primary school in District 8, Ho Chi Minh City. To conduct the study, 79 fourth-grade pupils were randomly chosen and divided into two groups, namely experimental and control. While the control group consisting of 17 males and 22 females was instructed using the present Physical Education curriculum, the experimental group including 17 males and 22 females was given physical exercises with music. The experiment lasted for eight weeks. Applying the conventional approaches to studying sports, the study selected five exercise groups (15 exercises with music) for chest/shoulders/arms, abdomen/torso, legs, and two compounds. The results indicated that the music-based exercises could promote the general physical fitness of four-grade pupils at a public Primary school in District 8, Ho Chi Minh City.  Article visualizations

An Efficient Method for Generating Synthetic Data for Low-Resource Machine Translation – An empirical study of Chinese, Japanese to Vietnamese Neural Machine Translation

Data sparsity is one of the challenges for low-resource language pairs in Neural Machine Translation (NMT). Previous works have presented different approaches for data augmentation, but they mostly require additional resources and obtain low-quality dummy data in the low-resource issue. This paper proposes a simple and effective novel for generating synthetic bilingual data without using external resources as in previous approaches. Moreover, some works recently have shown that multilingual translation or transfer learning can boost the translation quality in low-resource situations. However, for logographic languages such as Chinese or Japanese, this approach is still limited due to the differences in translation units in the vocabularies. Although Japanese texts contain Kanji characters that are derived from Chinese characters, and they are quite homologous in sharp and meaning, the word orders in the sentences of these languages have a big divergence. Our study will investigate these impacts in machine translation. In addition, a combined pre-trained model is also leveraged to demonstrate the efficacy of translation tasks in the more high-resource scenario. Our experiments present performance improvements up to +6.2 and +7.8 BLEU scores over bilingual baseline systems on two low-resource translation tasks from Chinese to Vietnamese and Japanese to Vietnamese
