    Using Extensive Reading to Improve First Year Students Learner Autonomy

    Extensive Reading (ER) has been a hot topic among the scholars all over the world due to the benefits it brings to studentsrsquo study. It is often argued to improve learner autonomy, vocabulary learning, writing, attitude towards reading and so forth. This paper reviews the literature relevant to the above issues and indicates the challenges of implementing Extensive Reading into the language classrooms

    Variations in Gonadosomatic Index, Gonadal Development and Spawning Induction of Spotted Scat Scatophagus argus (Linnaeus, 1766)

    This study evaluated variations in gonadosomatic index (GSI), gonadal development stages, and hormonal spawning induction of Scatophagus argus in captivity. Male and female fish were cultured separately in net cages in Tam Giang lagoon, Central Vietnam, from January to December 2020. Five fish of each sex were randomly sampled monthly. Gonads were collected, GSI determined, and subsequently prepared for histology. Gamete quality was assessed with a light microscope. Spawning was hormonally induced with different doses of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and luteinizing hormone-release hormone (LHRH-A2). Gonadal development started to increase in March, peaking in July. The peak spawning period of the fish was from June to August, displaying the highest GSI value, sperm motility, and oocyte diameter. Only female GSI fluctuated significantly month-by-month (P<0.05). Histological examination indicated that S. argus is a multiple-spawner. Application of LHRH-A2 (70 ”g/kg) stimulated spawning and resulted in better latency periods, fertilization, and hatching rates

    Seeing the world from its words: All-embracing Transformers for fingerprint-based indoor localization

    In this paper, we present all-embracing Transformers (AaTs) that are capable of deftly manipulating attention mechanism for Received Signal Strength (RSS) fingerprints in order to invigorate localizing performance. Since most machine learning models applied to the RSS modality do not possess any attention mechanism, they can merely capture superficial representations. Moreover, compared to textual and visual modalities, the RSS modality is inherently notorious for its sensitivity to environmental dynamics. Such adversities inhibit their access to subtle but distinct representations that characterize the corresponding location, ultimately resulting in significant degradation in the testing phase. In contrast, a major appeal of AaTs is the ability to focus exclusively on relevant anchors in RSS sequences, allowing full rein to the exploitation of subtle and distinct representations for specific locations. This also facilitates disregarding redundant clues formed by noisy ambient conditions, thus enhancing accuracy in localization. Apart from that, explicitly resolving the representation collapse (i.e., none-informative or homogeneous features, and gradient vanishing) can further invigorate the self-attention process in transformer blocks, by which subtle but distinct representations to specific locations are radically captured with ease. For that purpose, we first enhance our proposed model with two sub-constraints, namely covariance and variance losses at the Anchor2Vec. The proposed constraints are automatically mediated with the primary task towards a novel multi-task learning manner. In an advanced manner, we present further the ultimate in design with a few simple tweaks carefully crafted for transformer encoder blocks. This effort aims to promote representation augmentation via stabilizing the inflow of gradients to these blocks. Thus, the problems of representation collapse in regular Transformers can be tackled. To evaluate our AaTs, we compare the models with the state-of-the-art (SoTA) methods on three benchmark indoor localization datasets. The experimental results confirm our hypothesis and show that our proposed models could deliver much higher and more stable accuracy

    Expansion of Major Urban Areas in the US Great Plains from 2000 to 2009 Using Satellite Scatterometer Data

    A consistent dataset delineating and characterizing changes in urban environments will be valuable for socioeconomic and environmental research and for sustainable urban development. Remotely sensed data have been long used to map urban extent and infrastructure at various spatial and spectral resolutions. Although many datasets and approaches have been tried, there is not yet a universal way to map urban extents across the world. Here we combined a microwave scatterometer (QuikSCAT) dataset at ~1 km posting with percent impervious surface area (%ISA) data from the National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD) that was generated from Landsat data, and ambient population data from the LandScan product to characterize and quantify growth in nine major urban areas in the US Great Plains from 2000 to 2009. Nonparametric Mann-Kendall trend tests on backscatter time series from urban areas show significant expanding trends in eight of nine urban areas with p-values ranging 0.032 to 0.001. The sole exception is Houston, which has a substantial non-urban backscatter at the northeastern edge of the urban core. Strong power law scaling relationships between ambient population and either urban area or backscatter power (r2 of 0.96 in either model) with sub-linear exponents (ÎČ of 0.911 and 0.866, respectively) indicate urban areas become more compact with more vertical built-up structure than lateral expansion to accommodate the increased population. Increases in backscatter and %ISA datasets between 2001 and 2006 show agreement in both magnitude and direction for all urban areas except Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP), likely due to the presence of many lakes and ponds throughout the MSP metropolitan area.     Adrenomedullin gene expression is developmentally regulated and induced by hypoxia in rat ventricular cardiac myocytes

    Adrenomedullin is a recently discovered hypotensive peptide that is expressed in a variety of cell and tissue types. Using the technique of differential display, the adrenomedullin gene was observed to be differentially expressed in developing rat heart. Reverse transcription- polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed that the level of adrenomedullin mRNA was significantly higher in adult ventricular cardiac muscle as compared with embryonic day 17 ventricular cardiac muscle. Adrenomedullin receptor mRNA was constitutively expressed throughout development of the ventricular heart. Two potential hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) consensus binding sites were identified in the mouse adrenomedullin promoter at -1095 and -770 nucleotides from the transcription start site. Exposure of cultured adult rat ventricular cardiac myocytes to hypoxia (1% O2) resulted in a significant, time-dependent increase in adrenomedullin mRNA levels. Transfection studies revealed that the 5\u27-flanking sequence of adrenomedullin was capable of mediating a hypoxia-inducible increase in transcription. Mutation of the putative HIF-1 consensus binding sites revealed that the major regulatory sequence that mediates the hypoxia-inducible transcriptional response is located at -1095. These data demonstrate that the adrenomedullin gene is developmentally regulated in ventricular cardiomyocytes, that adrenomedullin transcription can be induced by hypoxia, and that this response is primarily mediated by HIF-1 consensus sites in the adrenomedullin promoter

    Required flows for aquatic ecosystems in Ma River, Vietnam

    Ecological flow requirements for the Ma River in dry season were assessed in three reaches of Ma – Buoi, Ma – Len and Ma – Chu. 5 indictor fish species was chosen based on biodiversity survey and roles of those species in aquatic ecosystem as well as local communities. Biological and hydrological data (dry season of 2016- 2017) and 35 year recorded hydrological data were collected and analyzed as input data for a physical habitat model River HYdraulic and HABitat SImulation Model – RHYHABSIM. Model results shown that the optimal flows of the reaches were very much higher compare with the minimum annual low flow - MALF. In this study, MALF7day were applied to calculate the recommended minimum flows of the three reaches. The recommended required minimum flows for Ma – Buoi, Ma – Len and Ma – Chu reaches were 51 m3/s, 49 m3/s and 61 m3/s, respectively. It must be stressed that this study only assessed whether or not there is enough habitat available for the river to sustain a healthy ecosystem

    Multicarrier Approaches for High-Baudrate Optical-Fiber Transmission Systems with a Single Coherent Receiver

    In this paper, we show the remarkable timing error (TE) and residual chromatic dispersion (CD) tolerance improvements of the filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) over orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) for high-baudrate spectral slicing transmitter and single coherent receiver transmissions. For a 512 Gb/s 16 quadrature amplitude modulated (16QAM) spectrum slicing system at 1600 km of fiber transmission, the FBMC-based system reduces TE and residual CD penalties by more than 1.5 dB and 3 dB, in comparison to the OFDM-based system, respectively
