Determining key research areas for healthier diets and sustainable food systems in Viet Nam
Vietnamese food systems are undergoing rapid transformation, with important implications for human and environmental health and economic development. Poverty has decreased, and diet quality and undernutrition have improved significantly since the end of the Doi Moi reform period (1986-1993) as a result of Viet Nam opening its economy and increasing its regional and global trade. Yet poor diet quality is still contributing the triple burden of malnutrition, with 25 percent stunting among children under age 5, 26 percent and 29 percent of women and children, respectively, anemic, and 21 percent of adults overweight. Agricultural production systems have shifted from predominantly diverse smallholder systems to larger more commercialized and specialized systems, especially for crops, while the ‘meatification’ of the Vietnamese diet is generating serious trade-offs between improved nutrition and sustainability of the Vietnamese food systems. The food processing industry has developed rapidly, together with food imports, resulting in new and processed food products penetrating the food retail outlets, trending towards an increase in the Westernized consumption patterns that are shifting nutrition-related problems towards overweight and obesity and, with it, an increase of non-communicable disease-related health risks. While regulatory policies exist across the food system, these are not systematically implemented, making food safety a major concern for consumers and policy makers alike. Where data exists, it is not easy to aggregate with data from across food system dimensions, making it difficult for Viet Nam to make an informed analysis of current and potential food system trade-offs. In our research, we reviewed existing literature and data, and applied a food systems framework to develop an initial food systems profile for Viet Nam and to identify a comprehensive set a of research questions to fill current data gaps identified through the review. Insights on these would provide the comprehensive evidence needed to inform policy makers on how to develop new food systems policies for Viet Nam, and further refine and improve existing policies to achieve better quality diets and more sustainable food systems in Viet Nam. Based on these, we then engaged with stakeholders to develop research priorities in the Viet Nam context and identified 25 priority research questions. This paper aims to stimulate such reflections by clearly outlining key areas for research, government policy, and development programs on priority investment to build the evidence base around inclusive food systems interventions that aim to result in healthier diets and more sustainable food systems for Viet Nam

Laser induced surface acoustic wave combined with phase sensitive optical coherence tomography for superficial tissue characterization:a solution for practical application
Mechanical properties are important parameters that can be used to assess the physiologic conditions of biologic tissue. Measurements and mapping of tissue mechanical properties can aid in the diagnosis, characterisation and treatment of diseases. As a non-invasive, non-destructive and non-contact method, laser induced surface acoustic waves (SAWs) have potential to accurately characterise tissue elastic properties. However, challenge still exists when the laser is directly applied to the tissue because of potential heat generation due to laser energy deposition. This paper focuses on the thermal effect of the laser induced SAW on the tissue target and provides an alternate solution to facilitate its application in clinic environment. The solution proposed is to apply a thin agar membrane as surface shield to protect the tissue. Transient thermal analysis is developed and verified by experiments to study the effects of the high energy Nd:YAG laser pulse on the surface shield. The approach is then verified by measuring the mechanical property of skin in a Thiel mouse model. The results demonstrate a useful step toward the practical application of laser induced SAW method for measuring real elasticity of normal and diseased tissues in dermatology and other surface epithelia
Chatbot for Creating and Consuming Podcasts via Short Messaging Service (SMS)
Podcast creation can be a complicated undertaking that involves the use of audio equipment to record and process content. Furthermore, a podcast creator needs to work with a provider to host and distribute podcast content. Moreover, podcast creators must rely on listeners having a podcatcher application to discover and listen to the podcast. This disclosure describes a chatbot that enables users to create and consume podcasts easily from any device, including low capability mobile devices. Users can create or consume podcasts by interacting with the chatbot via Short Messaging Service (SMS) or other text-based chat interface. The techniques enable podcast creation and consumption from devices that lack Internet connectivity

Low dose inflammatory potential of silica particles in human-derived THP-1 macrophage cell culture studies - Mechanism and effects of particle size and iron.
Silica and iron are major constituents in ambient particulate matter, and iron is a common impurity in many engineered nanomaterials. The purpose of this work was to determine the pro-inflammatory and other biological effects and mechanism of particle size and iron presence under low dose, non-cytotoxic conditions that are likely to approximate actual exposure levels, in contrast with higher dose studies in which cytotoxicity occurs. Specifically, human-derived THP-1 macrophages were exposed to 1 μg/ml of pristine and iron-coated 50 nm and 2 μm engineered silica nanoparticles. Particles were first characterized for size, size distribution, surface area, iron concentration, phase and aggregation in cell culture media. Then, biological assays were conducted to determine a non-lethal dose used in subsequent experiments. Superoxide production, lipid peroxidation, and increased pro-inflammatory cytokine (TNF-α and IL-1β) mRNA expression were measured as a function of particle size and iron presence. Smaller particle size and the presence of iron increased superoxide production, lipid peroxidation, and the induction of pro-inflammatory cytokine mRNA expression. Separate addition of an iron-chelator, a scavenger of superoxide and hydrogen peroxide, and an inhibitor of phosphatidylcholine specific phospholipase C (PC-PLC), suppressed the increase in cytokine mRNA expression. Furthermore, free iron itself showed none of the aforementioned effects. The results highlight the importance of particle size and iron in lung inflammation for both natural and engineered nanomaterials, under low dose, non-toxic conditions, and support the role of an oxidant, lipid peroxidation and PC-PLC dependent inflammatory mechanism
Using innovative and participatory methods to capture the contribution of local food biodiversity in the diet in Vietnam
To Risk or Not to Risk: Learning with Risk Quantification for IoT Task Offloading in UAVs
A deep reinforcement learning technique is presented for task offloading
decision-making algorithms for a multi-access edge computing (MEC) assisted
unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) network in a smart farm Internet of Things (IoT)
environment. The task offloading technique uses financial concepts such as cost
functions and conditional variable at risk (CVaR) in order to quantify the
damage that may be caused by each risky action. The approach was able to
quantify potential risks to train the reinforcement learning agent to avoid
risky behaviors that will lead to irreversible consequences for the farm. Such
consequences include an undetected fire, pest infestation, or a UAV being
unusable. The proposed CVaR-based technique was compared to other deep
reinforcement learning techniques and two fixed rule-based techniques. The
simulation results show that the CVaR-based risk quantifying method eliminated
the most dangerous risk, which was exceeding the deadline for a fire detection
task. As a result, it reduced the total number of deadline violations with a
negligible increase in energy consumption.Comment: Accepted for ICC202
BES3 time of flight monitoring system
A Time of Flight monitoring system has been developed for BES3.
The light source is a 442-443 nm laser diode, which is stable and provides a
pulse width as narrow as 50 ps and a peak power as large as 2.6 W. Two
optical-fiber bundles with a total of 512 optical fibers, including spares, are
used to distribute the light pulses to the Time of Flight counters. The design,

Understanding service failure and recovery: A customer-based phenomenographic approach
To date, researchers have largely considered service failure and recovery as a combination of individual constructs, often in isolation, rather than viewing failure and recovery holistically. Consequently, our understanding is fragmented. Furthermore, while some attempt has been made to gain a better understanding of service failure and recovery from both the customer and the employee’s perspective (cf. Bitner et al.1990; McColl-Kennedy and Sparks 2003), no study has employed an interpretative perspective that potentially offers a rich, in-depth approach to this important area of research. Given this gap, our paper presents the value of taking a customer-based interpretive approach to obtaining a fuller understanding of the way customers view service failure and recovery. In this paper we report the findings of our phenomenography study of twenty in-depth interviews. Not only do we argue the benefits of adopting this fresh approach to studying service failure and recovery, we also present an innovative conceptual framework derived from our phenomenographic research findings, which has significant theoretical and practical implications
