    The impact of corruption on the performance of newly established enterprises : empirical evidence from a transition economy

    This paper investigates the effects of corruption on the performance of newly established enterprises. Using longitudinal data from enterprise surveys containing virtually all firms over the period from 2011 to 2015 in Vietnam, we find that corruption deteriorates firm financial performance, and subsequently exposes them to a greater failure probability. We further find that, while corruption imposes more harmful effects on the performance and survival of private domestic firms, it exerts no significant impact on state-owned firms. On the other hand, foreign firms are also able to take advantage of corruption to enhance their performance and survivability. In addition, our results suggest that the more mature firms are better at dealing with corruption and can eventually take advantage of it to enhance their performance. The results are robust after various model specifications as well as alternative classifications of newly established firms.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    A Passivity-based Control Combined with Sliding Mode Control for a DC-DC Boost Power Converter

    In this paper, a passivity-based control combined with sliding mode control for a DC-DC boost power converter is proposed. Moreover, a passivity-based control for a DC-DC boost power converter is also proposed. Using a co-ordinate transformation of state variables and control input, a DC-DC boost power converter is passive. A new plant is zero-state observable and the equilibrium point at origin of this plant is asymptotically stable. Then, a passivity-based control is applied to this plant such that the capacitor voltage is equal to the desired voltage. Additionally, the sliding mode control law is chosen such that the derivative of Lyapunov function is negative semidefinite. Finally, a passivity-based control combined with sliding mode control law is applied to this plant such that the capacitor voltage is equal to the desired voltage. The simulation results of the passivity-based control, the sliding mode control and the passivity-based control combined with sliding mode control demonstrate the effectiveness and show that the capacitor voltage is kept at the desired voltage when the desired voltage, the input voltage E and the load resistor R are changed. The results show that compared with the passivity-based control, the passivity-based control combined with sliding mode control has better performance such as shorter settling time, 8.5 ms when R changes and it has smaller steady-state error, which is indicated by the value of integral absolute error (IAE), 0.0679 when the desired voltage changes.     Website Quality and Intention to Use Real Estate Website in Housing Market

    The purpose of this study is to operationalize the impact of some factors of real estate website quality on behavioral intention to use in searching information about housing market. Research model is the integration of extended Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) of Davis and Information Success System of DeLone and McLean. The data of 847 real estate website users from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City was analyzed by Structural Equation Model (SEM) and multiple group analysis. The findings indicate that most of all hypotheses received support from data, specifically, Perceived Enjoyment has the most positive impact on Attitude and Behavioral Intention of real estate website users. Moreover, there is difference in the degree of impact of website quality between the perception of users in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.     Organisational Baseline Study: Overview report for Tra Hat CSV, Vietnam (VN03)

    This report covers the Organisational Baseline Study (OBS) for the CCAFS Climate-Smart Village Tra Hat in the South Viet Nam. During October 2014 interviews were conducted with local stakeholders at ten organisations who are working or collaborating with farmers and/or the community in Vinh Loi district, Bac Lieu province. The Tra Hat CSV is located near the coastal area, at tail end of a primary canal of Quan Lo Phung Hiep system (QLPH), the Mekong Delta of Vietnam, it usually causes lack of fresh water in from QLPH in dry season. There are two distinct dry season (December to April) and rainy season (May to November) which typhoon happens seldom in rainy season. Protected by dyke and sluice system of QLPH in Bac Lieu province, Tra Hat has not been affected by saline intrusion for last 15 years. The main farming systems in the village comprise two or three rice crops per year, small livestock as pig, chicken and ducks. Besides, mixed fruit garden and cash crop are often blended in residential area. Ground water and water in ponds is popular in household to provide domestic water, raising fish or garden irrigation and livestock, especially in dry season. The objectives of the OBS study are to: Provide indicators to monitor changes in behaviours and practices of locally relevant organisations that have climate change related activities in Bac Lieu over time Understand the provision of information/services at the local level that informs farmers’ decision making about their livelihood strategies in response to climate change This OBS report also supplements to the quantitative Household Baseline Survey (HBS) and the qualitative Village Baseline Studies (VBS) in Tra Hat CSV and surrounding villages

    Primary pulmonary T-cell lymphoma mimicking asthma and community-acquired pneumonia: a rare case report

    Primary pulmonary T-cell lymphoma (PPTL) is a rare disease. Diagnosing PPTL is challenging due to non-specific clinical symptoms and imaging. A 32-year-old female presented with persistent fever, cough, and dyspnoea. The symptoms were initially treated as asthma and community-acquired pneumonia without improvement. Chest computed tomography (CT) revealed bilateral consolidations with a CT angiogram sign, and flexible bronchoscopy showed infiltrative lesions causing bronchial stenosis. Histopathological examination of the tissue biopsy identified T-cell lymphoma through immunohistochemical staining positive for CD3. This case highlights the importance of considering differential diagnoses such as PPTL in patients with atypical presentations of asthma or non-resolving pneumonia. This case also demonstrates the diagnostic utility of flexible bronchoscopy in identifying airway obstruction due to malignant cells, which can mimic asthma

    Mediating Effect of Social Commerce Continuance Use Intention on the Relationship Between Perceived Values and Brand Loyalty

    The purpose of this paper is to examine the mediating effect of social commerce continuance use intention on the relationship between perceived values and brand loyalty in the social commerce context. The data was collected from 176 members of the Apple Watch Social Commerce site in Vietnam via an online questionnaire. Applying the structural equation modelling method, we found that social commerce continuance use intention has mediating effects on the relationship between perceived values and brand loyalty.     Spondylolysis-induced Multilevel Lumbar Spondylolisthesis; Challenges in Lumbar Spine Surgery

    Lumbar spondylolysis and multilevel lumbar spondylolysis account for 4.4-5.8% and 0.3% of the general population, and multilevel lumbar spondylolysis resulting in spondylolisthesis is even rarer. Herein, we report two cases of three-level lumbar spondylolisthesis because of spondylolysis: A 49-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital for dull lower back pain over the past 8 months, with exacerbating symptoms when standing and walking. Spasticity at lumbar region and radiculopathy at S1 nerve root was found on examination and a 63-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of numbness and perianal sensory disturbances with difficulty urinating 2 weeks ago, the symptoms gradually increased to the time of examination. Both patients were diagnosed with multilevel lumbar spondylolisthesis because of spondylolysis and were indicated for posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF). After surgery, both patients recovered well without any significant complications. The improved treatment results suggest the application of PLIF technique to treat spondylolysis-induced multilevel lumbar spondylolisthesis

    Village Baseline Study: Site Analysis Report for Tra Hat Village, Vinh Loi, Bac Lieu, Viet Nam (VNM 03)

    This report presents data collected from the Village Baseline Study conducted on 2-4 October 2014 at the Tra Hat village, Vinh Loi district, Bac Lieu, Vietnam. Data were collected through focus group discussions and participatory resource mapping with community members in the village. The Village Baseline Study is part of the baseline activities conducted under the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture, and Food Security (CCAFS) in South East Asia. The purpose is to collect data for indicators that will allow site comparability and monitoring to assess changes in terms of food security and natural resource management across time. Results show that the men and women in Tra Hat village consider farmland, rivers and canals as important natural resources. The quality, however, of land, water and wildlife habitats has declined in the last decade along with the improvement of farming techniques and intensive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Infrastructures such as roads, internal canals, hospitals, schools, water supply station and electricity transformer station have improved. The future is envisioned to have improved internal canals in farmlands and a developed irrigation system, dykes and sluices to support high agriculture production. Home garden diversification was also believed to enhance food security and improve livelihood resilience. To turn the vision into reality, the community expects support from the different organizations working in the area considering current impacts of salinity intrusion and sea level rise, the need interventions of CCAFS and its partners. Strengthening the irrigation system, improving local rice variety, and introducing modern farming techniques taking into account negative impacts of climate change are major recommendation for future intervention

    Impact of biochar on the water holding capacity and moisture of basalt and grey soil

    Climate change has been threatening the sustainable development of the agricultural sector around the globe. It is a main reason of prolonged drought which gives negative effects on productivity and quality of agricultural products. For solving these emerging challenges, there have been many solutions on improving soil health in order to increase the tolerance of soil and plant to adverse weather conditions. Recent researches on biochar show that this is a good soil amendment because of its water holding capacity, nutrient retention, increased porosity and enhanced soil microbial activity. This study investigated the effect of biochar from rice husk and coffee husk produced by gasifier on the ability to retain water and moisture in basalt and grey soil, which collected from farming areas in Vietnam. The result illustrates that water holding capacity and soil moisture depend significantly on each type of biochar and applied dosage as well as characteristic of soil. Accordingly, when adding 1% biochar by mass to the grey soil (initial moisture content of 13%) helped increase the efficiency of water holding capacity by 26-33% corresponding to coffee husk or rice husk biochar. It is different from basalt soil (initial moisture content of 27%) when adding 1% rice husk biochar will impact on water retention efficiency was 7%, equivalent to 3% biochar from coffee husk. Therefore, biochar can be introduced as a soil conditioner effectively in dry soil or enhance the water retention in fertile soil that eventually contributed to the sustainable agriculture
