Constraining the Temperature of Impact Melt from the Mistastin Lake Impact Structure Using Zircon Crystal Structures
Impact melt is a product of hyper-velocity impact events formed by the instantaneous melting of near-surface target rocks. Constraining the temperature of impact melt is vital to understanding its prograde heating and cooling history, which can have implications for inferring the environment of early Earth ~4.0 billion years ago when microbial life potentially arose. To date, only one datum on the initial impact melt temperature has been derived by Timms et al. These authors studied zirconia microstructures and crystallographic orientations that revealed the former presence of cubic zirconia, found in a black impact glass at the Mistastin Lake impact structure, Canada. The presence of cubic zirconia indicates a minimum temperature for the impact melt of >2370C from the dissociation temperature of zircon to cubic zirconia and liquid SiO2. With only one temperature datum, it is still difficult to constrain the entire temperature range experienced during the impact melting process; from its instantaneous formation to thermal equilibrium with the cold clasts collected along the crater floor and walls. In addition, obtaining a temperature value from only one type of impactite limits the inferred temperature range, because each impactite experiences a different cooling history. In this study, we present a preliminary investigation of 61 zircon crystals, 14 of which are similar to those studied by Timms et al., from the Mistastin Lake impact structure. MP3 - A meteorology and physical properties package to explore air-sea interaction on Titan
The exchange of mass, heat and momentum at the air:sea interface are profound influences on the terrestrial environment, affecting the intensity of hurricanes, the size of waves and lake-effect precipitation. Titan presents us with an opportunity to study these processes in a novel physical context, with a different sea, atmosphere and gravity. The MP3 instrument, under development for the proposed Discovery mission TiME (Titan Mare Explorer [1,2]) is an integrated suite of small, simple sensors that combines the function of traditional meteorology packages with liquid physical properties and depth-sounding : these latter functions follow the concept of - and indeed use spare elements from - the Huygens Surface Science Package (SSP,[3]). However, unlike Huygens’ brief and dynamic 3 hours of measurement, in TiME’s 6-Titan-day (96 Earth day) nominal mission enabled by radioisotope power, MP3 will have an unprecedented long-term measurement opportunity in one of the most evocative environments in the solar system, Titan’s sea Ligeia Mare
DNA Nucleobase Synthesis at Titan Atmosphere Analog by Soft X-rays
Titan, the largest satellite of Saturn, has an atmosphere chiefly made up of
N2 and CH4 and includes traces of many simple organic compounds. This
atmosphere also partly consists of haze and aerosol particles which during the
last 4.5 gigayears have been processed by electric discharges, ions, and
ionizing photons, being slowly deposited over the Titan surface. In this work,
we investigate the possible effects produced by soft X-rays (and secondary
electrons) on Titan aerosol analogs in an attempt to simulate some prebiotic
photochemistry. The experiments have been performed inside a high vacuum
chamber coupled to the soft X-ray spectroscopy beamline at the Brazilian
Synchrotron Light Source, Campinas, Brazil. In-situ sample analyses were
performed by a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. The infrared spectra
have presented several organic molecules, including nitriles and aromatic CN
compounds. After the irradiation, the brownish-orange organic residue (tholin)
was analyzed ex-situ by gas chromatographic (GC/MS) and nuclear magnetic
resonance (1H NMR) techniques, revealing the presence of adenine (C5H5N5), one
of the constituents of the DNA molecule. This confirms previous results which
showed that the organic chemistry on the Titan surface can be very complex and
extremely rich in prebiotic compounds. Molecules like these on the early Earth

Social interaction, noise and antibiotic-mediated switches in the intestinal microbiota
The intestinal microbiota plays important roles in digestion and resistance
against entero-pathogens. As with other ecosystems, its species composition is
resilient against small disturbances but strong perturbations such as
antibiotics can affect the consortium dramatically. Antibiotic cessation does
not necessarily restore pre-treatment conditions and disturbed microbiota are
often susceptible to pathogen invasion. Here we propose a mathematical model to
explain how antibiotic-mediated switches in the microbiota composition can
result from simple social interactions between antibiotic-tolerant and
antibiotic-sensitive bacterial groups. We build a two-species (e.g. two
functional-groups) model and identify regions of domination by
antibiotic-sensitive or antibiotic-tolerant bacteria, as well as a region of
multistability where domination by either group is possible. Using a new
framework that we derived from statistical physics, we calculate the duration
of each microbiota composition state. This is shown to depend on the balance
between random fluctuations in the bacterial densities and the strength of
microbial interactions. The singular value decomposition of recent metagenomic
data confirms our assumption of grouping microbes as antibiotic-tolerant or
antibiotic-sensitive in response to a single antibiotic. Our methodology can be
extended to multiple bacterial groups and thus it provides an ecological

Fungi isolated from cultured eggs, alevins and broodfish of brown trout in a hatchery affected by saprolegniosis
P. 510-518The aquatic fungi cultured from eggs, alevins and broodfish of brown trout Salmo trutta
belonged to the genus Saprolegnia and were identified as S. diclina, S. australis, S. ferax,
S. furcata, S. hypogyna, S. unispora and S. parasitica. The species obtained from infected eggs and
alevins were different to those from infected fish. Several Saprolegnia species were isolated from
eggs and alevins, whereas all the isolates obtained from broodfish were the pathogenic
S. parasitica.S
One-pot isothermal DNA amplification Hybridisation and detection by a disc-based method
[EN] An integrated sensor comprising isothermal DNA amplification and in situ detection is presented. The method principle is based on recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) and detection in the microarray format by compact disc technology as a high-throughput sensing platform. Primers were immobilised on the polycarbonate surface of digital versatile discs (DVD) and, after hemi-nested amplification, multiplexing identification of each tethered product was achieved by optical scanning with a 650 nm-laser of the DVD drive. The efficiency of one-pot hybridisation/elongation/detection depended strongly on probedensity and other factors such as the concentration of the unbound primers present in solution. The optimised conditions provided equivalent amplification factors (7.3 x 10(8) -8.9 x 10(8) fold) to those obtained by conventional reactions performed in vials. The proposed method was applied to Salmonella detection (generic by hns and oriC genes, and specific for subspecies I by STM4507 gene). A triplex assay was satisfactorily compared to the non-integrated protocols. Food and vaccine samples were analysed in a shorter time with less handling. The results indicate that the multiplex DVD assay is a simple, competitive, isothermal, portable system that is particularly useful for microbiological routine analysis. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Data Management Plan Implementation, Assessments, and Evaluations: Implications and Recommendations
Data management plans (DMPs) have become nearly a worldwide requirement for research funding. To meet these new funding agency expectations, information professionals across domains and the world have worked to create resources and services to successfully implement and sometimes assess DMPs. This essay presents a series of case studies from different institutions across the globe to highlight current practices and share recommendations for future work. A summary of various projects related to DMP implementation, assessment, and evaluation in different contexts provides a useful overview of current practices. The essay concludes with recommendations for practical oversight and scoring to improve DMPs’ utility in enabling the sharing of data
Comparative Population Genetics of the Immunity Gene, Relish: Is Adaptive Evolution Idiosyncratic?
The frequency of adaptive evolution acting on common loci in distant lineages remains an outstanding question in evolutionary biology. We asked whether the immunity factor, Relish, a gene with a history of directional selection in Drosophila simulans, shows evidence of a similar selective history in other Drosophila species. We found only weak evidence of recurrent adaptive protein evolution at the Relish locus in three sister species pairs, suggesting that this key component of the insect immune system has an idiosyncratic evolutionary history in Drosophila
