The instruments used for information gathering provide the information to assess whether students have achieved the competences set out in the training plan. Therefore, knowing how they understand and describe the capabilities and skills they are demonstrating is useful information to be considered at times of change and curriculum restructuring. In this paper we describe the results of study in which students describe what is involved in each of the assessment techniques they have undergone during their undergraduate studies and what skills were used in each case. With this information, we have tried to organise the types of tools to collect information with skills developed from the perceptions of students, presenting a continuum of cognitive abilities.

Especialización en Estudios PedagógicosThe main purpose of this study was to describe the occupational well-being of the full time teachers and administrative personnel from the University “Universidadde la Costa – C.U.C.” The specific objectives were to determinate the psychosocial well-being factors and identify the collateral effects. This project is based on a quantitative investigation. The population was integrated and constituted by a representative sample of 254 people between full time teachers, scholars and administrative personnel of the University “Universidad de la Costa – C.U.C.” In order to accomplish the objectives for this investigation, the Occupational Well-being Questionare by Joseph Blanch, Miguel Shagun and Genis Cervantes, was applied; this is a theoretical model of occupational well-being which includes a descriptive dimension of the Psychosocial Well-being (integrated by affections, skills and expectations) and the other category of colateral effects(somatization, burnout and alientation) to employees in different departments and faculties. The question about satisfaction and work-quality is emphasized by the results with the highest score by the scholars, in the second place the administrative personnel, which manifested having experimented satisfaction and work-quality in the Institution, but suggesting actions of improvement; the last group was the full time teachers who generally scored lower than the other two groups, maybe because they manifested some indicators of favorability based on their work conditions and how they feel about their job. This can infer the necessity to revise the upcoming actions, in order to increase the levels of acceptance and compromise with the system developed by the University. It is concluded that the well-being is an important aspect to improve the quality of the employees working life and to make possible having a better course of action developed by the UniversityLa presente investigación tuvo como objetivo general describir el bienestar laboral de los docentes y administrativos de la Universidad de la Costa – C.U.C. Final results of this work have been presented at the following meetings: 36rd Annual Meeting of the European Society for Pediatric Infectious Diseases (ESPID 2018), Malmö, Sweden, 28th May-June 2nd, 2018. (Ref. ESP18-0517).Aims: Vaccine response is poor among children living with HIV. The gut microbiota has been identified as a potential target to improve vaccine immunogenicity, but data are scarce in the context of HIV infection. Methods: Pilot, double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled trial in which 24 HIV-infected children were randomized to receive a mixture of symbiotics, omega-3/6 fatty acids, and amino acids or placebo for 4 weeks, each in combination with ART, and were then immunized against influenza. Vaccine response and safety of the nutritional supplementation were the primary outcomes. Results: Eighteen HIV-infected children completed the follow-up period (mean age 11.5 ± 4.14 years, 61% female). The nutritional supplement was safe but did not enhance the response to the influenza vaccine. A 4-fold rise in antibody titers was obtained in only 37.5% of participants in the intervention arm vs. 40% in the placebo. No immunological or inflammatory predictors of vaccine response were identified. Conclusions: In this exploratory study, a 4-week course of symbiotics did not increase influenza vaccine immunogenicity in HIV-infected children. Larger studies are warranted to address the potential of modulating the microbiome in children living with HIV.This work was funded by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III-Fondos FEDER (grant number CB21/17/00025), Acción Estratégica en Salud (PI13/0422, PI17/01283, PI18/00154, and PI18CIII/00009). Multiomics Molecular Research into the Recalcitrant and Orphan Quercus ilex Tree Species: Why, What for, and How

    Get PDF
The holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) is the dominant tree species of the Mediterranean forest and the Spanish agrosilvopastoral ecosystem, “dehesa.” It has been, since the prehistoric period, an important part of the Iberian population from a social, cultural, and religious point of view, providing an ample variety of goods and services, and forming the basis of the economy in rural areas. Currently, there is renewed interest in its use for dietary diversification and sustainable food production. It is part of cultural richness, both economically (tangible) and environmentally (intangible), and must be preserved for future generations. However, a worrisome degradation of the species and associated ecosystems is occurring, observed in an increase in tree decline and mortality, which requires urgent action. Breeding programs based on the selection of elite genotypes by molecular markers is the only plausible biotechnological approach. To this end, the authors’ group started, in 2004, a research line aimed at characterizing the molecular biology of Q. ilex. It has been a challenging task due to its biological characteristics (long life cycle, allogamous, high phenotypic variability) and recalcitrant nature. The biology of this species has been characterized following the central dogma of molecular biology using the omics cascade. Molecular responses to biotic and abiotic stresses, as well as seed maturation and germination, are the two main objectives of our research. The contributions of the group to the knowledge of the species at the level of DNA-based markers, genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics are discussed here. Moreover, data are compared with those reported for Quercus spp. All omics data generated, and the genome of Q. ilex available, will be integrated with morphological and physiological data in the systems biology direction. Thus, we will propose possible molecular markers related to resilient and productive genotypes to be used in reforestation programs. In addition, possible markers related to the nutritional value of acorn and derivate products, as well as bioactive compounds (peptides and phenolics) and allergens, will be suggested. Subsequently, the selected molecular markers will be validated by both genome-wide association and functional genomic analyses

The AuNSt surface was functionalized with a thiolated photolabile molecule (5), whereas the mesoporous silica face was loaded with a model drug (doxorubicin) and capped with proton-responsive benzimidazole-beta-cyclodextrin supramolecular gatekeepers (N 1). Upon irradiation with NIR-light, the photolabile compound 5 photodissociated, resulting in the formation of succinic acid, which induced the opening of the gatekeeper and cargo delivery. In the overall mechanism, the gold surface acts as a photochemical transducer capable of transforming the NIR-light input into a chemical messenger (succinic acid) that opens the supramolecular nanovalve. The prepared hybrid nanoparticles were non-cytotoxic to HeLa cells, until they were irradiated with a NIR laser, which led to intracellular doxorubicin release and hyperthermia. This induced a remarkable reduction in HeLa cells viability. The authors gratefully acknowledge financial support from the Spanish Government [Projects MAT2015-64139-C4-1-R, AGL2015-70235-C2-2-R and SAF2017-84689-R (MINECO/AEI/FEDER, UE)], the Generalitat Valenciana (Project PROMETEO2018/024) and European Union (Erasmus Mundus Programme, Action 2, grant agreement number 2014-0870/001001). AimsVaccine response is poor among children living with HIV. The gut microbiota has been identified as a potential target to improve vaccine immunogenicity, but data are scarce in the context of HIV infection.MethodsPilot, double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled trial in which 24 HIV-infected children were randomized to receive a mixture of symbiotics, omega-3/6 fatty acids, and amino acids or placebo for 4 weeks, each in combination with ART, and were then immunized against influenza. Vaccine response and safety of the nutritional supplementation were the primary outcomes.ResultsEighteen HIV-infected children completed the follow-up period (mean age 11.5 ± 4.14 years, 61% female). The nutritional supplement was safe but did not enhance the response to the influenza vaccine. A 4-fold rise in antibody titers was obtained in only 37.5% of participants in the intervention arm vs. 40% in the placebo. No immunological or inflammatory predictors of vaccine response were identified.ConclusionsIn this exploratory study, a 4-week course of symbiotics did not increase influenza vaccine immunogenicity in HIV-infected children. Larger studies are warranted to address the potential of modulating the microbiome in children living with HIV
