Una geografía imperial : Vieja España de José María Salaverría

José María Salaverría e Ipenza (1873 - 1940) publicó en 1907 Vieja España, su contribución al tema castellano definitorio de los escritores de la generación del 98. Galdós prologó el volumen e impulsó su publicación. Las propuestas regeneracionistas del autor vasco, así como su valoración de la figura de Don Quijote, se oponen a la de sus compañeros de promoción cronológica (Unamuno, Maeztu y Azorín) y constituyen un acercamiento original desde posturas conservadoras y ultranacionalistas. Salaverría consideró ideas nocivas para la nación tanto la insistencia en la pobreza económica del país como la defensa del personaje cervantino como mártir redentor de la vida colectiva española. Salaverría postula un retomo a la sociedad medieval y aristocrática como único modo de reactivar la sociedad occidental.José María Salaverría e Ipenza (1873-1940) published Vieja España in 1907. This contributed to the Castillian issue, that defines the writing of the «Generación del 98». The preface to this text was written by Galdós, who also pushed forward with its publication. The Regenerationists proposals from Salaverría, as well as his consideration of Don Quijote, are the opposite ones to his fellows' (Unamuno, Maeztu and Azorín). These proposals are an original approach from Conservative and Ultra-nationalists positions. According to him, to emphasise the poverty of the country, and the defending of the Cervantes' character as the martyr who redeems the Spanish collective life are dangerous ideas. From this point, Salaverría proposes the return to a medieval and aristocratic society as the only way for reactivate Occidental Society

Adaptive breakwaters with inflatable elements for coastal protection. Preliminary numerical estimation of their performance

Excessive erosion of sand beaches defines a serious problem worldwide and is particularly pronounced in the Mediterranean region. One of the typical mea- sures for alleviating this erosion consists in building rigid breakwaters in the vicinity of the coast for diminishing sand transport. This solution, however, is often accompanied by undesirable alteration of the coastline. In this work we address the viability of using conceptually new structures with inflatable ele- ments striving to improve the control over the sediment transport. The aim of the inflatable element is to adapt the breakwater configuration to the sea state. A preliminary design is proposed and tested in a number of storm scenarios us- ing an in-house finite element/level set model. Influence of various breakwater design parameters upon its functionality is studied. Transmission coefficients and maximum pressures exerted upon the breakwater are estimated. Numer- ical study performed shows that for the considered range of storm scenarios the proposed design is characterized by transmission coefficients below 0.5. It is also shown that the use of inflatable elements facilitates adaptation of the breakwater functionality to a given sea state.Postprint (author's final draft

A FEM fluid-structure interaction algorithm for analysis of the seal dynamics of a Surface-Effect Ship

This paper shows the recent work of the authors in the development of a time-domain FEM model for evaluation of the seal dynamics of a surface effect ship. The fluid solver developed for this purpose, uses a potential flow approach along with a streamline integration of the free surface. The paper focuses on the free surface-structure algorithm that has been developed to allow the simulation of the complex and highly dynamic behaviour of the seals in the interface between the air cushion, and the water.; The developed fluid-structure interaction solver is based, on one side, on an implicit iteration algorithm, communicating pressure forces and displacements of the seals at memory level and, on the other side, on an innovative wetting and drying scheme able to predict the water action on the seals. The stability of the iterative scheme is improved by means of relaxation, and the convergence is accelerated using Aitken's method.; Several validations against experimental results have been carried out to demonstrate the developed algorithm.
