Calculations of K+, K- and phi Production in Near-Threshold Proton-Nucleus Collisions

K+, K- and \phi meson production in proton-nucleus (pA) collisions has been calculated within a BUU transport model. It is shown that the nucleon-hyperon strangeness transfer channel is essential. The role of three-body reactions has been investigated within the medium. Stockpiling Tall Fescue in the Mid-Latitude Region of the Eastern United States

Stockpiling grass is a method of growing forage for deferred grazing during winter. Tall fescue is the best adapted cool-season perennial grass available in the mid-latitude of the eastern United States (US) for stockpiling (accumulating growth of) forage for deferred grazing in the fall and winter. Thus it can provide much of the fall and winter feed for livestock. Grazing stockpiled tall fescue reduces winter feeding cost and better distributes nutrients compared to traditional hay feeding methods. The Effectiveness of Data Representation Characteristics on User Validation

Many different data modelling or representation schemes have been used or proposed. One important use of such data representations is to communicate the data content of a proposed system design to users: the user validation task. The effects of the characteristics of four such data models on user comprehension were investigated in a controlled laboratory experiment. The results showed that the two primarily graphical representations were more understandable than two alternatives for most of a set of tasks designed to simulate user validation. There were some preliminary indications that the graphical or semantic data models led to more systematic data modelling behavior. Relational models did out-perform graphical models with respect to relationship identifier recognition. Additional research is discussed that will more fully explore the role of data representations in systems development. The results of this experiment are also be applicable to end-user computing

Convective self-aggregation in a mean flow

Convective self-aggregation is an atmospheric phenomenon found in numerical simulations in a radiative convective equilibrium framework of which configuration captures the main characteristics of the real-world convection in the deep tropics. As tropical deep convection is typically embedded in a large-scale flow, we impose a background mean wind flow on convection-permitting simulations through the surface flux calculation. The simulations show that with imposing mean flow, the organized convective system propagates in the direction of the flow but slows down compared to what pure advection would suggest, and eventually becomes stationary relative to the surface after 15 simulation days. The termination of the propagation arises from momentum flux, which acts as a drag on the near-surface horizontal wind. In contrast, the thermodynamic response through the wind-induced surface heat exchange feedback is a relatively small effect, which slightly retards (by about 15 %) the convection relative to the mean wind

Characteristics of cancer patients using homeopathy compared with those in conventional care: a cross-sectional study

Background: There are only few studies on cancer patients who are treated in complementary and alternative medicine clinics and comparing them with patients in conventional care. We will present the comparison of characteristics of two patient cohorts: one was treated in a homeopathic cancer care clinic and one was treated in a conventional oncology care (CC) outpatient clinic. Patients and methods: Six-hundred and forty-seven patients were included in this cross-sectional cohort study and had to fill in questionnaires [health-related quality of life (QoL) (Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy—General Scale), depression and anxiety (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), fatigue (Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory) and expectancies toward treatment]. Clinical data were extracted from medical records. This study presents the comparison of both cohorts. Results: Patients in the homeopathy cohort are younger, better educated and more often employed than patients in the CC cohort. The most pronounced differences indicate longer disease histories and different diagnostic and clinical pretreatment variables. Despite the clinical differences, QoL as well as anxiety, depression and fatigue was similar in both the groups. Conclusions: Homeopathic treatment is sought by cancer patients at a different phase during the course of the disease, which has particular implications for research. Epstein-Barr-Virus - Ein klinisch relevanter Marker für das Nasopharynxkarzinom? = Epstein-Barr virus - a clinically relevant feature of nasopharyngeal carcinoma? (author's transl.)

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) has been linked to Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) by seroepidemiological evidence and by the regular proof of EBV-DNA in the epithelial tumor cells. We have been able to study the serological parameters of 62 NPC patients of the local ENT-Clinic. All patients were kaukasians in contrast to a previous study by Henle et al. Our results emphasize the remarkable predominance of EBV-IgA antibodies to viral capsid antigen (VCA) and early antigen (EA) in NPC patients and prove the value of the test for the initial diagnosis of the disease. Follow-up studies with subsequent serological tests strongly suggest that this test is related to the stage of the disease. We have also found NPC-typical serological EBV-IgA titers in 3 lymphoepithelial carcinomas of the tonsil and the soft palate. Similar titers have been found in two cases of poorly differentiated carcinomas of the base of the tongue. All these tumors arise in the lymphoepithelial tissue of Waldeyer's ring. We conclude that possibly some carcinomas of Waldeyer's ring are similarly related to EBV as nasopharyngeal carcinomas are
