The Ethical Treatment of Research Assistants: Are We Forsaking Safety for Science?

    Get PDF
Science inevitably involves ethical discussions about how research should be implemented. However such discussions often neglect the potential unethical treatment of a third party: the research assistant. Extensive anecdotal evidence suggests that research assistants can experience unique physical, psychological, and social risks when implementing their typical responsibilities. Moreover, these research assistants, who perhaps engage in research experience to bolster their curricula vitae, may feel coerced to continue to work in unsafe environments out of fear of losing rapport with the research supervisor or letters of recommendation for their future endeavors. In the present article, we address two important issues regarding the ethical treatment of research assistants. First, we present evidence suggesting that research assistants may experience substantive risk when implementing their assigned responsibilities. Second, we propose a document, the "Research Assistant's Bill of Rights," as a possible ethics code for people supervising research assistants. This document is independent from typical institutional review board processes, and it has the potential to maximize benefits to research supervisors and research assistants

    Working memory and cued recall

    Get PDF
Previous research has found that individuals with high working memory have greater recall capabilities than those with low working memory (Unsworth, Spiller, & Brewers, 2012). Research did not test the extent to which cues affect one’s recall ability in relation to working memory. The present study will examine this issue. Participants completed a working memory measure. Then, they were provided with cued recall tasks whereby they recalled Facebook friends. The cues varied to be no cues, ambiguous cues high in imageability, and cues directly related to Facebook. The results showed that there was no difference between individual’s ability to recall their Facebook friends and their working memory scores. However, those in the ambiguous cue condition were able to recall significantly fewer Facebook friends than those in the Facebook cue or no cue condition. Thus, this research shows that ambiguous cues can interfere with recall. However, further research is needed to see the extent that working memory moderates this effect

RAD Module Infrastructure of the Field-programmable Port eXtender (FPX) Version 2.0

    Get PDF
The Field-programmable Port eXtender (FPX) provides dynamic, fast, and flexible mechanisms to process data streams at the ports of the Washington University Gigabit Switch (WUGS-20). In order to facilitate the design and implementation of portable hardware modules for the Reprogrammable Application Device (RAD) on the FPX board, infrastructure components have been developed. These components abstract application module designers from device-specific timing specifications of off-chip memory devices, as well as processing system-level control cells. This document describes the design and internal functionality of the infrastructure components and is intended as a reference for future component revisions and additions. Application module designers should refer to the Generalized RAD Module Interface Specification of the Field Programmable Port Extender (FPX), EUCS-TM-01-15

Clarice nos bebeu: uma breve análise de corpos

This paper proposes a reading of the short story “Ele me bebeu,” by Clarice Lispector, published in A via crucis do corpo, emphasizing the characters Serjoca and Affonso, apparently secondary, but who, in our perspective, contribute a lot to reflections on gender issues presented, initially, by Aurélia’s behavior.

The Relationship of Personal, Family, and Abuse-Specific Factors to Children’s Clinical Presentation Following Childhood Sexual Abuse

    Get PDF
Past literature has proposed potential variables (e.g., age, gender, attributional style) that may relate to clinical presentation following childhood sexual abuse (CSA). However, few studies have tested these relationships. The current study examined multiple factors related to clinical presentation following CSA in 101 children and adolescents presenting for treatment at Project SAFE, a parallel group treatment for children/teens and their nonoffending parents. Using clusters developed in a previous study, relationships between proposed variables and pretreatment clinical presentation were examined. Results indicated that attributions about the abuse, parental mental health, and severity of abuse related to the differentiated clinical presentation. These results are important because pinpointing correlates to clinical presentation following CSA helps elucidate differences among those with a history of CSA and gives greater insight into the impact sexual abuse has on children. Knowing these differences may also benefit treatment providers in the development of individual treatment goals during therapy

Determining critical factors of e-government adoption among accountants in Iraq

    Get PDF
There are limited studies on e-government adoption among accountants in countries experiencing conflicts. Similarly, there are limited studies that aim to investigate the inefficient e-government adoption due to the lack of regulations support and poor information system. Hence, the objectives of this study were to investigate the factors influencing e-government adoption and whether regulation support plays a moderating role in Iraq. This study used the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) Model to develop the research framework. This study was underpinned by five variables representing (public performance expectancy, public facilitating condition, public effort expectancy, information system quality, and social influence) were tested, and regulation support was included as a moderator with five moderating hypotheses. Data were collected through OneDrive online survey compromising 400 sample, 108 from the Kurdistan Region, and 292 from Iraq. The result reveals that four variables (public performance expectancy, public facilitating condition, information system quality, and social influence) have a significant relationship with e-government adoption. However, public effort expectancy shows an insignificant relationship with e-government adoption. Interestingly, regulation support moderates the relationship between (public effort expectancy, information system quality, and social influence) and the e-government adoption. This study contributes to the richness of UTAUT model with the inclusion of information system quality and regulation support to the research framework. Also, this study offers valuable insights to the government and policy-makers who are responsible for assisting in the e-government service operations. The result also contributes to the explanation of e-government adoption levels and the government could formulate strategies to encourage employees to adopt e-government in the developing and conflict areas. Conclusions, limitations and suggestions for future studies are also highlighted
